iMAGING: a novel automated system for malaria diagnosis by using artificial intelligence tools and a universal low-cost robotized microscope.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, with 247 million cases reported worldwide in 2021 according to the World Health Organization. Optical microscopy remains the gold standard technique for malaria diagnosis, however, it requires expertise, is time-consuming and difficult to reproduce. Therefore, new diagnostic techniques based on digital image analysis using artificial intelligence tools can improve diagnosis and help automate it. METHODS: In this study, a dataset of 2571 labeled thick blood smear images were created. YOLOv5x, Faster R

Evaluation of retina and microvascular changes in the patient with Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multifaceted neurodegenerative disease. The optic nerve, as a window into the central nervous system (CNS), is known to be an important part of the CNS and can be detected non-invasively. With the widespread availability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices, an increasing number of studies have paid attention to the neuropathological disorders in the retina of PD patients in recent years. However, it is still controversial whether OCT can be used as a complementary tool for PD diagnosis. METHODS: This review is registered with PROSPERO, numbe

Detecting Structural Progression in Glaucoma with Optical Coherence Tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is increasingly used to obtain objective measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), optic nerve head, and macula for assessing glaucoma progression. Although OCT has been adopted widely in clinical practice, uncertainty remains concerning its optimal role. Questions include: What is the best structure to measure? What quantity of change is significant? Are structural changes relevant to the patient? How are longitudinal measurements affected by aging? How can changes resulting from aging be differentiated from true progression? How best should OCT

Real-Time Direct Evidence of the Superficial Lymphatic Drainage Effect of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Treatment for Lower Limb Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a widely used lymph drainage therapy that can be performed at home. However, the effectiveness of IPC for lymph drainage remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the real-time change in the lymph flow velocity during IPC and consider which mode and pressure are best for treating lower limb lymphedema. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight lower left limbs of 8 healthy volunteers and 17 lower limbs of 15 secondary lymphedema patients were investigated. Indocyanine green lymphography was performed with the subject covered with a trans

Controlled on-chip stimulation of quantal catecholamine release from chromaffin cells using photolysis of caged Ca2+ on transparent indium-tin-oxide microchip electrodes.

Photorelease of caged Ca(2+) is a uniquely powerful tool to study the dynamics of Ca(2+)-triggered exocytosis from individual cells. Using photolithography and other microfabrication techniques, we have developed transparent microchip devices to enable photorelease of caged Ca(2+), together with electrochemical detection of quantal catecholamine secretion from individual cells or cell arrays as a step towards developing high-throughput experimental devices. A 100 nm thick transparent indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film was sputter-deposited onto glass coverslips, which were then patterned into 24 cell

Transcorneal electrical stimulation for the treatment of visual field defects in patients with open-angle glaucoma: a monocentric, randomised, double-masked, sham-controlled pilot study: the TES-GPS study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness and is characterised by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells. While therapies to lower intraocular pressure slow the progression of the disease in most patients, a significant subset still shows progression despite treatment. Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) may potentially activate neuroprotective pathways and slow the progression of visual field defects. The OkuStim 2 System is a medical device for TES which was originally developed for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa and similar retinal dystro

Case study with dosimetric analysis: Total body irradiation to a patient with a left ventricular assist device.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: A patient presented with cardiogenic shock, requiring the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), and acute myeloblastic leukemia. This necessitated total body irradiation (TBI) while balancing dose reduction to the LVAD components to avoid potential radiation damage. Here we outline our treatment approach and dose estimates to the LVAD. ABSTRACT: This case report discusses the delivery of TBI to a patient with an LVAD. This treatment required radiation-dose determinations and consequential reductions for the heart, LVAD, and an external controller conne

Tethered capsule en face optical coherence tomography for imaging Barrett's oesophagus in unsedated patients.

OBJECTIVE: Barrett's oesophagus (BE) screening outside the endoscopy suite can identify patients for surveillance and reduce mortality. Tethered capsule optical coherence tomography (OCT) can volumetrically image oesophageal mucosa in unsedated patients and detect features of BE. We investigated ultrahigh-speed tethered capsule swept-source OCT (SS-OCT), improved device design, developed procedural techniques and measured capsule contact, longitudinal pullback non-uniformity and patient toleration. DESIGN: OCT was performed in 16 patients prior to endoscopic surveillance/treatment. Unsedated

Optic coherence tomography shows inflammation and degeneration in major depressive disorder patients correlated with disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has consistently detected inflammation in the etiology of depression and neuroimaging studies have demonstrated gray matter abnormalities implying a neurodegenerative process in depression. The aim of this study was to compare ganglion cell layer (GCL), and inner plexiform layer (IPL) volumes and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness between first episode and recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and controls using optic coherence tomography (OCT) in order to detect findings supporting a degenerative process. Also choroid thicknesses of the same

Carbon Dots for Electroluminescence: Bridging Molecular Fluorophores and Quantum Emitters.

Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging class of carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials composed of localized sp2-conjugated domains and edge/surface functional groups. Unlike inorganic quantum dots, CDs are constructed from earth-abundant, low-toxicity elements and can be chemically programmed through precursor design, heteroatom incorporation, edge-state regulation, and topology engineering. At the same time, unlike molecular fluorophores, CDs are nanoscale condensed-state emitters whose optical properties are governed by quantum confinement, chemical composition, aggregation, interdomain coupling

Comparison of Spectralis-OCT, GDxVCC and GDxECC in assessing retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in glaucomatous patients.

BACKGROUND: Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is characterized by a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). The defects in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) have been reported to be the earliest sign of glaucoma. We determined the agreement between RNFL thickness assessments from spectral-domain OCT (Spectarlis HRA + OCT; Heidelberg Engeneering, Heidelberg, Germany), scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) with variable cornea compensation (GDxVCC; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA), and SLP with enhanced cornea compensation (GDxECC; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA) in g

[Intracoronary brachytherapy with strontium/yttrium-90. Initial experiences in Germany].

Restenosis after PTCA is still an unresolved problem and occurs in approximately 30% of our patients despite a stent implantation rate of up to 63%. Intracoronary brachytherapy has the potential to counteract the proliferative component of restenosis as well as to prevent shrinking of the coronary artery. Two years ago, we applied for the license to use the Novoste Beta-Cath system. This is the first report of its use in Germany. Attaining the license was complicated by the facts that this device did not yet have CE-certification (MPG section 17), that brachytherapy is not yet an approved meth
