Gender and Contraception in Kenya: a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Access to the full range of contraceptive methods is a core component of sexual and reproductive health. While Kenya had one of the highest rates of contraceptive use compared to other countries on the African continent, studies since 2015 have shown prevalence of use has fallen; contraceptive usage rates are estimated at 38.7%, significantly lower than Kenya's target of 62% and in a context of high rates of unsafe abortions and high maternal mortality. This scoping review investigates the role of gender norms in determining patterns of contraceptive usage among women of childbeari

Trajectory changes in psychosocial adaptation levels of patients after implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices and development of the intervention programme: a mixed-methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The implantation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has become an important treatment for various types of arrhythmias and severe heart failure, effectively improving patient prognosis and increasing survival rates. However, patients after CIED implantation need to go through a process of coexisting with and adapting to the internal electronic device. This may result in limitations in daily activities, discomfort and lifestyle changes, which can easily lead to negative emotions and psychosocial maladjustment in the patients, seriously affecting their physical and m

A neuroeducational approach to STEM education: Integrating real-time cognitive analysis and cognitive load theory to optimize teaching and learning at universities.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to effectively meet challenging academic requirements has become imperative for university entrants. With emerging advancements within the domain of learning neuroscience and analytics, it has become possible to analyze and track the real-time mental states of learners. This has opened several avenues to apply the theoretical perspectives of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). Though applications of neuro-technological interventions for learning have become widely sought, their effective implementation wit

Self-Care Strategies of Emergency Nurses in Armed Conflict Areas: Experiences From the Field.

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses working in conflict zones face extraordinary psychological, physical, and ethical challenges in environments characterised by violence, resource scarcity, and moral distress. Despite increasing recognition of core competencies in emergency nursing for armed conflict contexts, self-care strategies that enable sustained professional practice remain underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences and self-care strategies of nurses working in healthcare settings along the Saudi-Yemeni border. The sec

Understanding how leaders navigate these complex demands is essential for strengthening health system preparedness and resilience. OBJECTIVES: The goal was to explore and unpack lived leadership experiences during a public crisis situation and to unpack how contextual factors shape their behaviours under uncertainty and prolonged disruption. DESIGN: This study was conducted in Canada during the middle phases of the C

Benign Envy in Nursing: A Qualitative Exploration of Perceived Triggers and Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Benign envy, a constructive form of upward social comparison, has received limited attention in nursing despite its potential relevance to professional learning, motivation, and growth. Although quantitative research has highlighted the potentially constructive aspects of benign envy, qualitative understanding of how nurses experience, interpret, and respond to benign envy within professional contexts remains limited. PURPOSE: This qualitative exploratory study sought to explore the perceptions benign envy within clinical and professional contexts. The research specifically focuse

Defining return-to-learn through an evidence-based systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Academic recovery following concussion has been defined in various contexts, however, these definitions vary considerably leading to heterogenous data and limited application. Standardized definitions have also been published, though their formation are not transparently described. Therefore, this research aimed to report the various operational definitions of return-to-learn, return-to-school, return-to-class, and return-to-academics found within the literature and propose evidence-based definitions for return-to-learn (RTL). METHODS: We searched PubMed and ScienceDirect for el

Progression of lumbar disc degeneration: a 26-year follow-up study of healthy individuals from childhood to adulthood.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Imaging signs of disc degeneration (DD) are common in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals and increase with age. In adults, DD progression typically peaks before age 50 and is strongly influenced by genetic factors at younger ages. However, longitudinal data describing DD progression from childhood through adulthood remain limited. PURPOSE: To characterize individual DD progression and examine the relationship between DD and lifetime low back pain (LBP) in a cohort of healthy volunteers followed from childhood into adulthood. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective longitudin

Feasibility of a community-based intervention for the diagnosis and management of hypertension in two rural populations in Kenya and The Gambia: IMPLEMENT-IHCoR feasibility study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is the leading global risk factor for mortality, causing over 10 million deaths annually. In sub-Saharan Africa, hypertension prevalence is high, particularly in rural areas, where it is less likely to be diagnosed, treated or controlled effectively. This results in a high burden of complications, including heart failure, stroke and kidney disease. Community-centred approaches using community health workers (CHWs), risk-based approaches and simplified treatment regimens have shown promise in improving hypertension management. However, there is limited evidence on the

A Culturally Grounded Music-Based Intervention for Indigenous Older Adults in Long-Term Care: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities continue to experience significant mental and physical health disparities associated with historical trauma, structural inequities, and disruptions to cultural continuity. Indigenous older adults residing in long-term care settings may be particularly vulnerable to social isolation, psychological distress, chronic pain, and reduced opportunities for cultural engagement. Music-based interventions (MBIs) have demonstrated potential for improving psychosocial and physical health outcomes; however, few MBIs have been culturally grounded in Indigenous worldviews o

Healthcare workers experiences in providing comprehensive abortion care to adolescents in the Eastern region of Ghana: A qualitative study : 1School of public Health, university of Ghana - Legon, Accra, Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, less safe or least safe abortion among adolescents remains a public health concern. In Ghana, complications from less safe and least safe abortions result in approximately 43,000 facility-based post-abortion care cases annually, contributing significantly to the overall burden of maternal morbidity and mortality. Healthcare workers play a critical role in delivering comprehensive abortion care (CAC) services to address the challenges of less safe and least safe abortion. At the same, there is scanty literature in Ghana on the experiences of these healthcare workers. Thi
