The objective of this article is to familiarize the dentist with clinical signs and laboratory methods used in diagnosing nutritional deficiencies, and to indicate which laboratory methods may be useful to the clinician in cases of suspected nutritional deficiency. It should be noted that the suggested laboratory methods were selected on the basis of their applicability for the clinical situation as well as their reliability as indicators of nutritional status. Therefore these suggested methods of choice may not in every instance be the most accurate of all indicators of nutritional status for

This retrospective observational study investigated the association between low vitamin B1 (VB1) levels and cognitive impairment in 77 Japanese patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Multivariable regression analysis identified a significant correlation between low VB1 levels (<2.6 μg/dL) and lower Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Fisher's exact test demonstrated a strong association between VB1 deficiency and cognitive impairment (p=0.001). Scatter plot analysis supported these findings, illustrating a dose-dependent trend: patients with severe VB1 deficiency consistently exhibit

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is considered to be the most effective treatment of morbid obesity and improvement of obesity-related comorbidities, such as type II diabetes. However, both peripheral and central neurological complications can occur after bariatric surgery. Such complications tend to occur more frequently after bypass surgery than after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). The objective of this study was to identify the patients that presented post-operative neurological complications after undergoing SG and describe the incidence, presentation, and management of these complications.

UNLABELLED: Thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia (TRMA) or Roger syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the occurrence of multiple clinical manifestations including megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus, and sensorineural deafness. A few patients have been also described with congenital cardiac malformations. The patients usually respond to treatment with pharmacological doses of thiamine. Mutations in the SLC19A2 gene, located at chromosome 1q24.2, are responsible for this syndrome. Here, we present two new Iranian TRMA patients who were homozygous for c.697C >

This review is limited to progress in the development of new or improved laboratory procedures to assess the nutriture of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and folic acid. There has been marked progress in this area for the other vitamins as well. The increased availability of radioassay techniques and HPLC methodologies that have application in nutrition assessment is significant. However, for a number of the vitamins, there is still a need for additional methods that provide functionally interpretable preclinical information and give accurate assessment of body reserves of the nutrien

An increased incidence of ischemic stroke has been reported in patients with Crohn's disease. Cerebral infarcts are usually considered as a complication of the hypercoagulable state associated with this inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The association between Crohn's disease, hyperhomocysteinemia and large-artery stroke of the young has rarely been reported. A 39-year-old woman, with prior medical history of Crohn's disease and hypertension, presented with an ischemic stroke of the left internal carotid artery (ICA) territory. Etiological workup disclosed bilateral high-grade ICA stenosis and

Preschool children in developing countries are likely to have multiple, concurrent micronutrient deficiencies. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of different combinations of nutritional fortified diet to improve the blood levels of iron, vitamin A and other essential micronutrients in the preschool population of Banan District of Chongqing, China. From December 2005 to June 2006, a total of 226 2-6 y old preschool children were recruited from three nurseries in the area, and they were randomly assigned to three different fortified diet groups for 6 mo. Group I was fortified

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), influenced by environmental and social-behavioral factors, is reported by a subset of … nd CORO1A.
CONCLUSION: Genetic loci reveal connections to cardiovascular risk, insulin resistance, thiamine deficiency, and resveratrol mechanism. Discovered genetic signals may offer insight into pertinent biological pathways for sleep apnea patients with an excessively sleepy subtype. Statement of Significance Sleep apnea is a complex sleep disorder. Exemplifying …

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a neurologic disease caused by vitamin B1 or thiamine deficiency (TD), being the alcohol use disorder its main risk factor. WE patients present limiting motor, cognitive, and emotional alterations related to a selective cerebral vulnerability. Neuroinflammation has been proposed to be one of the phenomena that contribute to brain damage. Our previous studies provide evidence for the involvement of the innate immune receptor Toll-like (TLR)4 in the inflammatory response induced in the frontal cortex and cerebellum in TD animal models (animals fed with TD diet […
