BACKGROUND: Solid organ transplant recipients are at increased risk of infection due to chronic immunosuppression. The incidence of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection is known to be increased in these patients compared with the immunocompetent population. Previous reports suggested that these patients are likely to experience a morbid disease course. Necrotising fasciitis (NF) can complicate varicella zoster virus in children. This is rare and has not previously been reported in the plastic surgery literature. We report a case of a female toddler who developed necrotising fasciitis secondary to chicken pox. Her presentation and progress are reported, the diagnosis of necrotising fasciitis in children and the small number of case series and case control studies are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the timeliness of vaccine administration among children aged 24 to 35 months for each state of the United States and the District of Columbia.
METHODS: We analyzed the timeliness of vaccinations in the 2000-2002 National Immunization Survey. We used a modified Bonferroni adjustment to compare a reference state with all other states.
RESULTS: Receipt of all vaccinations as recommended ranged from 2% (Mississippi) to 26% (Massachusetts), with western states having less timeliness than eastern states.

Using the Seattle protocol with minor modifications, 23 patients with severe aplastic anaemia received allogeneic bone marrow transplants from HLA/mixed leucocyte culture matched sibs in three London centres between 1973 and 1977. A review of the differential diagnosis of the lumbar disc syndrome, based on patients seen and treated during the past 10 years, provides discussion of the unusual cases. A survey of 285 patients treated in a consecutive series from 1964 to 1972 was done, which showed that 253 patients had prolapsed lumbar discs, 20 were treated for spondylolisthesis and 62 (23%) required consideration because of unusual features in association with the disc lesion or because of other pathology. The need for lateral and complete exposure of the nerve root in some instances is reaffirmed.
