Changes in Redox Balance and Mitochondrial Activity in the Retinas of Cystine/Glutamate Antiporter Knockout Mice.

IMPORTANCE: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a monogenic disorder, yet clinical outcomes are influenced by additional genetic factors. Despite decades of research, the genetics of SCD remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To assess all reported genetic modifiers of SCD, evaluate the design of associated studies, and provide guidelines for future analyses according to modern genetic study recommendations. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched through May 16, 2023, identifying 5290 publications. STUDY SELECTION: At least 2 reviewers identified 571 original, peer-reviewed E

Computer-based Auditory Training by New Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients Is Associated With Durable Improvements in Cochlear Implant Quality of Life.

OBJECTIVE: The process of adapting to communicate with a cochlear implant (CI) is complex. The use of auditory training after cochlear implantation may help to facilitate improvements in postoperative speech recognition and quality-of-life outcomes in new adult CI recipients. However, the effectiveness of auditory training remains uncertain and long-term effects have not been examined in a large sample of new adult CI users. As such, the objective of this study was to examine the influence of common forms of auditory training on speech recognition and CI-related quality-of-life (CI-related QOL

Epidemiology and Perception of Acne Among Adolescents in Jos, Nigeria: Cross-Sectional School-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents who make up a vast majority of the secondary school population are at a stage at which they are largely affected by acne. This condition, which is widely visible and easily recognized by peers, has numerous misperceptions surrounding it, which may influence attitudes toward people affected by it. There is a paucity of information on the prevalence of acne and how adolescents in Jos, Nigeria, view the condition. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of acne, perceived risk factors, and the accuracy of self-report among adolescents in Jos, Nigeria. The

The Role of Social Media Use in Peer Bullying Victimization and Onset of Anxiety Among Indonesian Elementary School Children.

Objectives: This study explored a multidimensional model of the relationships between social media use, gender, peer bullying victimization experiences, and the onset of anxiety symptoms among children. We hypothesized that greater experience of bullying would be associated with greater onset of anxiety. We also expected that gender and social media use (specifically Instagram and YouTube) would be linked with anxiety among elementary school children. To test this hypothesis, a structural equation modeling approach was used. Methods: A total of 456 elementary children aged 11-13 years from nin

Ionizing Radiation Protein Biomarkers in Normal Tissue and Their Correlation to Radiosensitivity: A Systematic Review.

Background and objectives: Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) has increased immensely over the past years, owing to diagnostic and therapeutic reasons. However, certain radiosensitive individuals show toxic enhanced reaction to IR, and it is necessary to specifically protect them from unwanted exposure. Although predicting radiosensitivity is the way forward in the field of personalised medicine, there is limited information on the potential biomarkers. The aim of this systematic review is to identify evidence from a range of literature in order to present the status quo of our knowledge of I

Mental Health Nurse experiences of delivering care to severely depressed adults receiving electroconvulsive therapy.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: ECT is a fast-working and potentially life-saving treatment, but it is still considered a controversial treatment choice. Due to lack of knowledge and public stigma, ECT can be an anxiety-inducing treatment for people experiencing severe depression. The nurse's role is to alleviate this anxiety, aid recovery and minimize the risk of relapse. They manage this onerous task ideally through the therapeutic relationship, and use the skills of assessment and risk identification in order to maximize patient outcomes. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The view

Atypical language characteristics and trajectories in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a genetic condition associated with a highly variable phenotypic expression. During childhood speech and language deficits are commonly observed. Findings of cross-sectional studies suggest syndrome-specific and changing language profiles, but a longitudinal approach to identify developmental changes is still lacking to date. AIMS: The present study aimed to delineate language characteristics and trajectories by comparing the performance of Dutch-speaking school-aged children with 22q11.2DS (n = 18) to those of peers with idiopathic intelle

Quality of life and retrospective perception of the effect of growth hormone treatment in adult patients with childhood growth hormone deficiency.

Divergent findings on the quality of life (QoL) and the psychosocial functioning of adults treated during childhood with growth hormone (GH) because of GH deficiency (GHD) have been reported. In the present study we evaluated the QoL and the perception of the effect of former GH treatment in Belgian young adults with childhood GHD. Thirty-six patients (22 males) were included in the study. They all were treated during childhood with GH for GHD. QoL was evaluated with a standardised questionnaire: the Quality of Life Assessment of Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults (QoL-AGHDA). Psychosocial fu

Is there more to the story? The added predictive value of expanded Adverse Childhood Experiences in maternal mental health during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are strongly linked to maternal mental health difficulties during pregnancy, affecting both mother and child through intergenerational transmission. Traditional ACEs frameworks have focused on family-related adversities, however, expanded models include broader social and community factors. Despite this, few studies have compared the predictive value of traditional versus expanded ACEs in pregnancy mental health. AIM: This cross-sectional study examines whether expanded ACEs improve prediction of pregnancy-related anxiety, depression, and pregn

Barriers and Facilitators to Accessing Preventive Services for Chronic Diseases Among People From Bangladeshi and Nepalese Backgrounds Living in Sydney.

BACKGROUND: People from Bangladeshi and Nepalese origin living in Australia experience a disproportionate burden of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Although preventive services are essential to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, existing evidence indicates that these communities encounter unique migration, socioeconomic and health system-level challenges that impede their access to existing preventive services in Australia. The present study therefore explored the barriers and facilitators to accessing preventive care services among people of Bangladeshi and

Prescriber's Preferences for Digital Health Applications in Mental Health Care: Cross-Sectional Best-Worst Scaling Study of General Practitioners and Psychotherapists in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders affect nearly one-third of adults in Germany, with a 12-month prevalence of approximately 28%. Following Germany's 2019 Digital Care Act, digital health applications (Digitale Gesundheitsanwendungen [DiGA]) became reimbursable interventions by the statutory health insurance for mental health conditions. However, adoption remains uneven. General practitioners (GPs) issue most mental health DiGA prescriptions, while psychotherapists or psychiatrists prescribe far fewer, even though most DiGA target mental health. Existing studies imply profession-specific barriers bu

Fracture Healing and Commonly Co-Prescribed Medications: Orthopedic Implications in Multimorbid Patients: A Narrative Review.

Fracture healing is a biologically complex process influenced not only by mechanical stability and patient-related factors but also by systemic medications commonly prescribed in orthopedic populations. In contemporary practice, many adults sustaining fractures are treated within a broader context of multimorbidity and polypharmacy, raising clinical questions about how commonly co-prescribed drug classes may intersect with biological pathways relevant to bone repair and recovery. However, evidence addressing these relationships remains dispersed across disciplines and is characterized by heter

Anthropogenic tritium as a continental-scale tracer in river-derived recharge.

BACKGROUND: Environmental hazards like floods, droughts and landslides pose serious public health and wellbeing consequences for populations, especially vulnerable communities in countries with low adaptive capacity. Empirical evidence from peer-reviewed literature and official climate change assessments indicates that, alongside high interannual climate variability, Uganda has experienced observable climate change over the past 50 years. This changing and increasingly variable climate poses challenges to population health in diverse ways, including through the transmission of infectious disea

Genetic Determinants of Tau-PET Imaging in Alzheimer's Disease: A Narrative Review of Genome-Wide and Candidate-Gene Studies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by extracellular β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and intracellular hyperphosphorylated tau neurofibrillary tangles, with tau pathology correlating more strongly than amyloid pathology with cognitive decline and neuronal loss. While traditional genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified loci associated with tau-related phenotypes in cerebrospinal fluid, these approaches cannot capture the regional brain patterns of tau deposition that may underlie disease heterogeneity. Recent GWAS incorporating tau-PET imaging have begun to address this gap, identif
