Self-awareness can be impaired in different forms, including bodily features, following brain lesions. Such as other complex symptoms, these disorders seem not being localized in one brain area but may occur following the impairment of different parts of a network. One of the most disrupting body awareness disorder for people's functioning is the feeling that one or more body parts do not belong to the person anymore, the so-called 'body part disownership'. This symptom can be undetected, with recent findings suggesting that subtle signs of body disownership are revealed using an assessment wi

Being deafblind means my perception differs profoundly from those who are conventionally sighted and have non-impaired hearing. A lot of hidden knowledge is to be found in the disparity between these differing experiences that could be of great value in developing assistive technologies that have a broad scope to engage with both disabled and non-disabled users. This article explores the balancing act between sensory loss and the potential inherent in all of us and how this should be part of the design process of haptic assistive technology.Facing the true impact of my sensory loss, I realised

BACKGROUND: Cervical radiculopathy (CR) is a common condition, often associated with cervicogenic headache (CGH), a secondary headache arising from cervical spine disorders. Mechanical intermittent cervical traction (MICT) is frequently prescribed to treat CR symptoms. The purpose of the study was to make a preliminary estimate of efficacy of adding MICT to conventional rehabilitation on CGH in patients with cervical radiculopathy.
METHODS: A total of 36 CR patients with CGH were randomly allocated to 3 equally sized groups (A, B and C). The treatment consisted of twelve sessions of conventio

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common entrapment neuropathy and is associated with altered brain function and structure. However, little is understood of the central mechanisms associated with its pain, symptom presentation, and treatment-related resolution. This longitudinal study evaluated carpal tunnel syndrome-related alterations in brain network communication and relationships to behavioural signs of central sensitization before and after carpal tunnel release surgery. We tested the hypothesis that carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with condition- and treatment-related plasticity i

BACKGROUND: There is equivocal evidence in support of the effectiveness of each of the three co-existing approaches to conservative treatment of cervical radiculopathy (CR): biological (regenerative), mechanical (decompression) and physical (analgesic and anti-inflammatory). The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of the three treatment approaches in CR.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 90 patients were assigned to six treatment groups. Biological treatment: 4 ultra-sound-guided periradicular injections of ACS or PRP (1 per week); Mechanical treatment: manual therapy (MT) or tra

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Studies over the past 20 years have revealed that there are fibrous connective tissues between the suboccipital muscles, nuchal ligament, and cervical spinal dura mater (SDM). This fibrous connection with the SDM is through the posterior atlanto-occipital or atlantoaxial interspaces and is called the myodural bridge (MDB). Researchers have inferred that the MDB might have important functions. It was speculated that the function of MDB might be related to proprioception transmission, keeping the subarachnoid space and the cerebellomedullary cistern unobstructed, and affectin

Following traumatic spinal cord injury, acute demyelination of spinal axons is followed by a period of spontaneous remyelination. However, this endogenous repair response is suboptimal and may account for the persistently compromised function of surviving axons. Spontaneous remyelination is largely mediated by Schwann cells, where demyelinated central axons, particularly in the dorsal columns, become associated with peripheral myelin. The molecular control, functional role and origin of these central remyelinating Schwann cells is currently unknown. The growth factor neuregulin-1 (Nrg1, encode

BACKGROUND: Generalized joint hypermobility (JHM) refers to increased joint mobility with simultaneous absence of any other systemic disease. JHM involves proprioception impairment, increased frequency of pain within joints and tendency to injure soft tissues while performing physical activities. Children with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) often undergo intensive physiotherapy requiring good physical capacities. Further, some physiotherapy methods apply techniques that increase joint mobility and thus may be contraindicated. The aim of this paper was to assess JHM prevalence in children with idiopa

Future developments of neuroprosthetic control will probably permit locomotion and posture to be maintained without the aid of crutches and will therefore require some form of balance control. Three fundamental questions will arise. First, the question of the location of imbalance-sensing transducers must be assessed. Secondly, the synergy, which is the relative amplitude and timing of muscle activity, and/or the strategy of joint torques required to re-establish a stable posture for different types of balance disturbances must be addressed. Thirdly, the control laws that map either trunk musc

We reviewed 153 episodes of cobalamin deficiency involving the nervous system that occurred in 143 patients seen over a recent 17-year period at 2 New York City hospitals. Pernicious anemia was the most common underlying cause of the deficiency. Neurologic complaints, most commonly paresthesias or ataxia, were the first symptoms of Cbl deficiency in most episodes. The median duration of symptoms before diagnosis and treatment with vitamin B12 was 4 months, although long delays in diagnosis occurred in some patients. Diminished vibratory sensation and proprioception in the lower extremities wer

Jaw muscle spindle afferents (JMSA) in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) project to the parvocellular reticular nucleus (PCRt) and dorsomedial spinal trigeminal nucleus (dm-Vsp). A number of premotor neurons that project to the trigeminal motor nucleus (Vmo), facial nucleus (VII) and hypoglossal nucleus (XII) are also located in the PCRt and dm-Vsp. In this study, we examined whether these premotor neurons serve as common relay pool for relaying JMSA to multiple orofacial motoneurons. JMSA inputs to the PCRt and dm-Vsp neurons were verified by recording extracellular responses to elec

Eye-to-eye gazing under low-level illumination provides a controlled laboratory paradigm for investigating out-of-body experiences (OBEs) and psychological projections. In the present study, a large sample of healthy participants (N = 398) completed a dyadic gazing task. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) conducted on nine items of the Strange-Face Questionnaire (SFQ) yielded a three-factor solution: (i) facial visual deformations (Derealization / Detachment-of-Reality; DR factor); (ii) out-of-body experiences (OBE factor); and (iii) apparitional projections of "ancestors" (Projection factor).

INTRODUCTION: Step-length asymmetry is a prevalent, energy-inefficient gait deviation in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). While neuromotor impairments and energy efficiency factors are implicated in gait deviations, their combined predictive power on step-length asymmetry remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the independent and synergistic predictive roles of specific neuromotor constraints and energetic efficiency variables in explaining step-length asymmetry in this population.
METHODS: Fifty-two children with unilateral CP (aged 8-18 years; Gross

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) using motor imagery (MI) offer promising rehabilitation potential for upper limb function in stroke survivors. Conventional paradigms rely on abstract visual feedback, which may lack ecological validity and could limit neural recruitment. Action observation (AO) and object affordance (OA) independently modulate motor cortical excitability via the mirror neuron system and canonical neural pathways. However, their potential synergistic effects in enhancing BCI performance have not been systematically investigated. We propose a novel "Phygital" interven

BACKGROUND: Primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair has re-gained significant interest due to its inherent anatomic advantages: retaining the proprioceptive fibers of the ACL may prevent kinesiophobia, while the procedure avoids donor site morbidity. Should revision become necessary, conventional ACL reconstruction remains a viable option. Research regarding this technique has accelerated, with 60.4% of the relevant literature published within the last 8 years. AIM OF THE STUDY: The most frequently reported technique is arthroscopic primary repair with internal brace ligament augmentat
