The Growing Burden of Fall-Related Injuries among Older Adults: A Seven-Year Study from a Tertiary Medical Center in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: As Taiwan's population ages, falls among older adults have become a critical public health concern. However, limited data exist regarding temporal trends and injury patterns in fall-related emergency department (ED) visits. This study aimed to examine trends in fall-related ED visits and hospitalizations among older adults in Taiwan and to explore injury distributions by age group. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Taiwan University Hospital between 2011 and 2017. Patients aged ≥65 years were compared with those aged 20-64 years. Characterizing types and circumstances of fractures in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study.

Patients are concerned about which activities increase fracture risk and which are considered safe. Our study describes where, when, and how fractures occurred in Canadian adults followed over ten years. Falls are a leading cause of all fracture types in Canadian adults and should be prioritized in fracture prevention guidelines. Our study characterized the type and circumstances of fractures which occurred over 10 years during the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study. Details of incident fractures were recorded annually using questionnaires, and fractures were confirmed by X-ray. Medical a

Evaluation of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Fall Prevention and Management for Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: With the global population aging, falls and fall-related injuries are ubiquitous, and several clinical practice guidelines for falls prevention and management for individuals 60 years or older have been developed. A systematic evaluation of the recommendations and agreement level is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review of clinical practice guidelines for falls prevention and management for adults 60 years or older in all settings (eg, community, acute care, and nursing homes), evaluate agreement in recommendations, and identify potential gaps. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A sy

Evaluation of a Patient-Centered Fall-Prevention Tool Kit to Reduce Falls and Injuries: A Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Falls represent a leading cause of preventable injury in hospitals and a frequently reported serious adverse event. Hospitalization is associated with an increased risk for falls and serious injuries including hip fractures, subdural hematomas, or even death. Multifactorial strategies have been shown to reduce falls in acute care hospitals, but evidence for fall-related injury prevention in hospitals is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a fall-prevention tool kit that engages patients and families in the fall-prevention process throughout hospitalization is associated with red

Injury severity score associated with concurrent bladder injury in patients with blunt urethral injury.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis of concurrent bladder damage in a patient with blunt urethral trauma can lead to a high rate of morbidity. In patients with a high index of suspicion, genitourinary workup is recommended. In complicated patients with multi-trauma, this workup has a risk of being delayed. A proven prognostic indicator to evaluate the likelihood of bladder injury in this population has not been established. The aim of this study was to determine if there was a clinical association between the Injury Severity Score (ISS) and bladder injury involvement among these patients. METHODS:

Injurious falls and subsequent adverse drug events among elderly - a Swedish population-based matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Fall injuries are stressful and painful and they have a range of serious consequences for older people. While there is some clinical evidence of unintentional poisoning by medication following a severe fall injuries, population-based studies on that association are lacking. This is investigated in the current study, in which attention is also paid to different clinical conditions of the injured patients. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study of Swedish residents 60 years and older from various Swedish population-based registers. Cases defined as adverse drug events (A

[A child who developed internal carotid artery obstruction 2 weeks after incurring an intraoral blunt injury: A case report].

This report describes a 9-year-old boy with an internal carotid artery (ICA) injury caused by a fall with the blunt edge of a toothbrush held in the mouth. The initial injury appeared trivial, but 2 weeks later, generalized convulsion and left hemiparesis occurred. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography revealed an infarction of the right striatum, right ICA occlusion, and stenosis of the right middle cerebral artery, which were caused by the dissection or intimal damage of the ICA due to the blunt trauma. For children, intraoral blunt trauma sometimes causes ICA occlusi

Mitral Perivalvular Leak after Blunt Chest Trauma: A Rare Cause of Severe Subacute Mitral Regurgitation.

Blunt chest trauma is a very rare cause of valve disorder. Moreover, mitral valve involvement is less frequent than is aortic or tricuspid valve involvement, and the clinical course is usually acute. In the present report, we describe the case of a 49-year-old man with a perivalvular mitral injury that became clinically manifest one year after a violent, nonpenetrating chest injury. This case is atypical in regard to the valve involved (isolated mitral damage), the injury type (perivalvular leak in the absence of subvalvular abnormalities), and the clinical course (interval of one year between

The significance of macrocephaly or enlarging head circumference in infants with the triad: further evidence of mimics of shaken baby syndrome.

Infants with the triad (neurologic dysfunction, subdural hematoma [SDH], and retinal hemorrhage) are often diagnosed as victims of shaken baby syndrome. Medical conditions/predisposing factors to developing the triad are often dismissed: short falls, birth-related SDH that enlarges, macrocephaly, sinus/cortical vein thrombosis, and others. Six infants with the triad are described in which child abuse was diagnosed, but parents denied wrongdoing. All 6 had either macrocephaly or enlarging head circumference, which suggested medical explanations. Three infants incurred short falls, 1 had a diffi

Does the mechanism of injury in pediatric blunt trauma patients correlate with the severity of genitourinary organ injury?

INTRODUCTION: Blunt abdominal trauma can result in injury to genitourinary (GU) organs. Children may be more susceptible to some GU injuries due to anatomic differences compared to adults. Mechanism of injury (MOI) has been thought to relate to both the likelihood and severity of GU injury in children, although this has not definitively been proven. Our purpose was to determine if MOI has any correlation to the severity of GU injury in children treated at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed records of all pediatric blunt trauma patients presenting to our institution from Janua

Atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation as a cause of torticollis in a 5-year-old girl.

Many patients present to the emergency department complaining of a sore or stiff neck and lateral flexion of the neck with contralateral rotation. Under the pressure of the breaching time and busy shifts some of the patients are discharged to the care of their general practitioners without adequate investigations. While most of the cases are due to benign causes, torticollis can be due to many congenital and acquired pathologies, some of which may need further investigation and urgent management. Atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS), tumours of the base of the skull and infections are among these ca
