Classification of Alzheimer's disease stages from magnetic resonance images using deep learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive type of dementia characterized by loss of memory and other cognitive abilities, including speech. Since AD is a progressive disease, detection in the early stages is essential for the appropriate care of the patient throughout its development, going from asymptomatic to a stage known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and then progressing to dementia and severe dementia; is worth mentioning that everyone suffers from cognitive impairment to some degree as we age, but the relevant task here is to identify which people are most likely to develop AD. Design of customized implants and 3D printing of symmetric and asymmetric cranial cavities.

A methodology has been developed in this work to design customized cranial implants from computed tomography (CT) scan images for symmetric as well as asymmetric defects. The two-dimensional CT scan images were converted into three-dimensional geometric models using software packages. Two cases of cranial cavities at different locations were considered for implant design using two different approaches. Case 1 is having a symmetric cranial cavity while Case 2 has an asymmetric frontal cranial cavity. The craniums with defects were 3D reconstructed. Customized cranial implants were made for the

Level-set based adaptive-active contour segmentation technique with long short-term memory for diabetic retinopathy classification.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a major type of eye defect that is caused by abnormalities in the blood vessels within the retinal tissue. Early detection by automatic approach using modern methodologies helps prevent consequences like vision loss. So, this research has developed an effective segmentation approach known as Level-set Based Adaptive-active Contour Segmentation (LBACS) to segment the images by improving the boundary conditions and detecting the edges using Level Set Method with Improved Boundary Indicator Function (LSMIBIF) and Adaptive-Active Counter Model (AACM). For evaluating th

A Population-Based Analysis of the Temporal Association of Screen Time and Aggressive Behaviors in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The recent widespread diffusion of screen-based devices among adolescents has raised questions about the effects of screen time on adolescent behavior, including aggressive behaviors. However, previous studies have been methodologically limited in their ability to distinguish between common vulnerability, concurrency, and lasting associations between screen time and aggression among adolescents, and findings are still inconsistent. To address this gap in the literature, time-varying direct and indirect associations between screen time and aggression were investigated. METHOD: The s

Circulating extracellular vesicles in the context of interstitial lung disease related to systemic sclerosis: A scoping literature review.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a significant cause of disability and mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc), where lung fibrosis stems from the interaction of cells within the epithelial, endothelial, interstitial, and immune cell compartments. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are particles released by cells capable of transferring functionally active molecules, playing a crucial role in intercellular communication. This scoping review aims to identify and map existing evidence about the role of EVs as biomarkers or pathophysiological actors in SSc-ILD. It also retrospectively asses

Automatic organ completion with image stitching for personalized radiation dosimetry in CT examinations.

PURPOSE: Computed tomography (CT) image-based patient-specific voxel-based dosimetry has difficulties complementing missing tissues for organs located partially inside or completely outside the image volume. Previous studies constructed patient-specific whole-body models by rescaling reference phantoms or extending regional CT images with manually adjusted phantoms. This study proposes a methodology for automatic organ completion of regional CT images for CT dosimetry using a stitching approach. METHODS: Virtual clinical trials were performed by truncating whole-body CT images to generate vir

Multipurpose made colorimetric materials for amines, pH change and metal ion detection.

Sensors are routinely developed for specific applications, but multipurpose sensors are challenging, due to stability and poor functional design. We report organic materials that operate in solution and gas phase. They show a strong response behaviour to at least three types of environmental changes: pH, amine and metal ion binding/detection. We have confirmed and validated our findings using various analytical and computational methods. We found that the changes in polarity of the solvent and pH not only red shift the tail of the absorption spectra, but also extend the peak optical absorption

Optimal surgical workup to ensure safe recovery of the donor after living liver donation - A systematic review of the literature and expert panel recommendations.

BACKGROUND: The essential premise of living donor liver transplantation is the assurance that the donors will have a complication-free perioperative course and a prompt recovery. Selection of appropriate donors is the first step to support this premise and is based on tests that constitute the donor workup. The exclusion of liver pathologies and assessment of liver anatomy and volume in the donor candidate are the most important elements in the selection of the appropriate candidate. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is evidence to define an optimal donor surgical workup that would improv

Robust Regression and Optimal Transport Methods to Predict Gastrointestinal Disease Etiology From High Resolution EGG and Symptom Severity.

OBJECTIVE: Gastric functional and motility disorders are highly prevalent, with gastroparesis (GP) and functional dyspepsia (FD), affecting 1.5-3% and 10% of the population, respectively. Multiple disease etiologies with overlapping symptoms, such as antral hypomotility, pylorospasm, autonomic dysfunction, and gastric myoelectric dysfunction underlie GP and FD. There is an unmet need to differentiate these etiologies non-invasively to tailor treatment strategies and predict treatment response. METHODS: We performed cutaneous high-resolution electrogastrogram (HR-EGG) recordings on 32 human su

Leptospirosis: Morbidity, mortality, and spatial distribution of hospitalized cases in Ecuador. A nationwide study 2000-2020.

BACKGROUND: In Ecuador, leptospirosis surveillance involves a mandatory notification of all cases and a hospitalization for severe illness. Morbidity and mortality are, nevertheless, underestimated and contribute directly to the status of leptospirosis as a neglected disease. Leptospira spp. is zoonotic in Ecuador with established endemic transmission in the Tropics. Here, we review retrospective national data within the country to aid in control strategies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a population-based nationwide study, we analysed morbidity, mortality, and spatial distribution on co

Neural Encoding and Decoding With Distributed Sentence Representations.

Building computational models to account for the cortical representation of language plays an important role in understanding the human linguistic system. Recent progress in distributed semantic models (DSMs), especially transformer-based methods, has driven advances in many language understanding tasks, making DSM a promising methodology to probe brain language processing. DSMs have been shown to reliably explain cortical responses to word stimuli. However, characterizing the brain activities for sentence processing is much less exhaustively explored with DSMs, especially the deep neural netw
