INTRODUCTION: The Buschke Löwenstein tumor (giant condyloma) in its perianal variant is an extremely rare disease caused by human papilloma virus. Although of histologically benign appearance, it infiltrates and destroys the surrounding tissue. There is a high risk of local recurrence and malignant transformation. The treatment of choice is wide surgical resection.
CASE: A 56-year-old woman presented with perianal giant condyloma infiltrating the rectum and vagina. The extensive soft tissue defect resulting from wide resection was filled with a transpelvic myocutaneous rectus abdominis flap.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is rarely associated with other skin diseases, especially cutaneous neoplasms. Such associations are exceptional and of unknown frequency. The aim of this study was to record the histologic variants and frequency of associated lesions in a large series of consecutive MC cases. We reviewed 578 MC cases from the Laboratory of Dermatopathology of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg, France (1959-1999). The locations of MC were as follows: head and neck (34.7%), trunk (27.1%), lower limbs (20.7%), upper limbs (8.7%), and genitalia (3.8%). Molluscum contagiosum occurre

Anogenital warts (AGW) were recently recognized in children, and their significance as an index of childhood sexual abuse is controversial. We report our transdisciplinary approach (including a pediatric surgeon, psychologist, social worker, ethics expert, and occasionally law enforcement agents) and its results in a group of 17 children with AGW treated at the public pediatric referral hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during a 3-year period (1996-1999). All children were treated by electrocauterization of the warts, tested for other STDs, and submitted to perineal examination under anesthe

The histopathologic diagnosis of vulvar condyloma acuminatum is often based on architectural features that are not specific for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Because HPV-associated lesions show increased cellular proliferation, the authors evaluated the usefulness of MIB-1 immunostaining as an aid in the differential diagnosis of cases equivocal for condyloma. The MIB-1 immunostaining pattern was correlated with HPV DNA detection in condyloma acuminatum (CON-A; n = 15), "consistent with condyloma" (c/w CON-A; n = 26), fibroepithelial polyp (FEP; n = 14), and squamous papilloma (n = 10)

The main viruses responsible for condyloma, a venereal disease, are the HPV 16 and 11. The stages of HPV infection are under the control of the immunitary system, which is inhibited by the virus itself. For this reason, the therapy of cervical condylomatosis is, at present, based on the use of interferon. The purpose of this study was to appreciate the activation of the immune system after therapy with interferon. We treated 12 women suffering from cervical condyloma and exocervical CIN with increasing doses of natural alpha-IFN injected intramuscularly, and also applied to the vagina. The cli

Infection by HPV is associated with several human diseases such as warts of the skin, condylomata of the genital track and carcinoma of the cervix. Although there is strong evidence for immune control of HPV types causing warts and condylomata, it is currently unclear whether patients infected with transforming HPV types can mount efficient T cell responses. Despite the apparent low immunogenicity of transforming HPV types, several Th and CTL epitopes have been identified in proteins derived from HPV16. This transforming virus is most frequently present in women with CIN and cervical carcinoma

AIM: To document trends in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) recorded by New Zealand STD Clinics from 1977-1993.
METHODS: Clinic disease figures have been recorded since clinics commenced in the 1920s and were recorded in a comprehensive format from the 1970s. The New Zealand Venereological Society has collated these data since 1986.
RESULTS: The most common STDs in New Zealand clinics are genital warts, non-specific genital infections, chlamydia and genital herpes. Genital Wart infection has been the commonest STD diagnosed in clinics since 1988 and occurred in 17.9% of new patients in 1

Authors were applied a method of DNA-DNA in situ hybridization for demonstration of HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 in cervical neoplasia and in invasion carcinoma of uterine neck. At 22 probes from CYV III and invasion carcinoma the results from hybridization with virus DNA were shown the presence of HPV-DNA at 15 patients. Some phases of method were optimized. Sensitiveness of method was controlled and compared with the results from the same probes, underlied to investigation with Southern-blot hybridization.

OBJECTIVE: To compare anal cytology, colposcopy and DNA hybridisation as methods of detecting anal HPV infection.
SUBJECTS AND DESIGN: Patients attending: (1) a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic with ano-genital warts; (2) a surgical out-patient department with anal fissure or haemorrhoids were examined for evidence of anal HPV infection.
RESULTS: Considering GUM clinic attenders, 17% (38/225) and 40% (90/225) had perianal or anal canal warts respectively. Colposcopic examination revealed anal acetowhite lesions without warts in 28% (63/225). Cytological evidence of HPV infection was found

Degenerate oligonucleotide primers were designed for in vitro amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a relatively well-conserved portion of the L1 capsid protein gene of genital human papillomaviruses. A specific 441bp fragment was amplified by PCR from genomic clones and clinical biopsy specimens containing DNA from HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33, as well as from a number of other clinical specimens known to contain unclassified HPV isolates. As some HPV non-specific DNA was also often amplified, another set of degenerate primers was designed which amplified a 335 bp sequenc

We have isolated a putative, spliced E5 cDNA of human papillomavirus type 11 (HPV-11) by polymerase chain reaction amplification of cDNAs from an experimental condyloma. Using retrovirus-mediated gene transfer, we isolated two novel HPV-11 cDNAs, one of which had a splice linking nucleotides 1272 and 3377. This transcript also existed in experimental condylomata and in cervical carcinoma cells transfected with cloned genomic HPV-11 DNAs. The 5' end of the transcript in transfected cells originated upstream of the initiation codon of the E1 open reading frame (ORF). It could conceptually encode

Recently, intense interest has focused on the relation between HPV infection and precancerous and cancerous lesions of the uterine cervix, as witnessed by the numerous publications on the subject. We carried out a prospective anatomo-clinical study on 224 HPV positive women followed in the Rene Huguenin Centre, from April 1984 to December 1988. Among these patients, cytology, colposcopy and biopsy were performed, when necessary, concurrently with the detection of HPV on cervical smears using a molecular hybridization method (G. ORTH). This study analysed the anatomo-clinical results and sugges

The purpose of this study was to analyze penile lesions that lacked the histological features of condylomata for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. Most of these lesions were detected in men whose partners had an HPV-related lesion. Sequences homologous to HPV DNA were detected in 12 of 84 (14%) lesions using in situ hybridization analysis; nine of these lesions contained HPV 6 or 11. HPV DNA was found in 25 of 26 (96%) penile condylomata, all but two of which contained HPV 6 or 11. Using the highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we also detected HPV DNA in four of 20 (20%) of the pen

A study of antibodies to human papillomavirus (HPV) 1 is reported in a series of sera from 126 patients with papilloma lesions of different clinical types (verruca plantaris, vulgaris, plana, condyloma acuminata, laryngeal papilloma) using a sensitive solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Our findings showed a significant prevalence of specific HPV 1 IgG antibodies in patients with plantar warts (65%). This incidence was considerably lower in patients with other papilloma lesions, in which positive sera may reflect a past infection with HPV 1. The ELISA test was evaluated as n

Twenty patients with papillomavirus-induced genital warts received pulsatory treatment with interferon gamma by subcutaneous injections in the abdominal skin. The condylomata regressed completely in 11 of the 20 patients analyzed. Sequential biopsies taken from genital warts and nonlesional skin were investigated by immunohistological techniques with the use of monoclonal antibodies against differentiation and HLA antigens to evaluate immunological effector mechanisms of condylomata regression. In all responders regression was shown to be associated with increasing dermal and epidermal infiltr

A total of 746 patients residing in Rochester, Minn, received the diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum between 1950 and 1978. Anaplasia was present in six and subsequently developed in 36 patients during follow-up examination in 42 patients (one male and 41 female). One had invasive squamous cell carcinoma (vulva), six had severe dysplasias, 21 had moderate to mild dysplasias, and 14 had carcinomas in situ (CIS), of which 11 were cervical. In the female patients, 37 of the anaplasias were cervical and the other four were vulval or vaginal. The 11 cervical CIS amounted to 3.8 times the expected nu
