The present article describes the occurrence of 17 cases of acute schistosomiasis in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. All individuals affected took a bath in a swimming pool of a holiday resort that was provided with water from a nearby brook. The apparently clean water and the absence of snails in the pool gave the wrong impression that there was no risk for infection. During a malacological survey at the site snails of the species Biomphalaria glabrata were found and tested positive for Schistosoma mansoni. All the patients live in the middle-class area

Circulating IgG antibody reactivity and excreted egg counts were investigated in 489 Kenyans given chemotherapy for schistosomiasis mansoni. Antibody reactivity was measured in ELISA, using either unfractionated aqueous soluble constituents of Schistosoma mansoni eggs (SEA) or CEF6 (a soluble fraction of S. mansoni eggs containing two cationic antigens) as the antigen source. The detection of IgG avidity in sera is potentially useful in the diagnosis of acute and chronic infection. We studied IgG avidity in 31 patients with fascioliasis, with the aim of evaluating the clinical application of this test to confirm the diagnosis of incubating cases and to distinguish between acute and chronic cases. Of the 31 cases, 13 were incubating and had a mean avidity index of 57.28 +/- 5.79%. The 18 chronic cases had an avidity index of 68.80 +/- 8.92%. The difference was highly significant. Peanut and ConA lectins were used as ligands to isolate glycoproteins from detergent extracts of adult Ostertagia ostertagi membranes. As a prelude to a national campaign to control schistosomiasis in Togo, mass screening of school children in 22 prefectures was undertaken to determine the extent of endemic schistosomiasis. Children were randomly selected for testing. In each case, stool examinations using by the Kato-Katz method and urine tests (centrifugation of 10 ml) were performed to detect Schistosome eggs. A monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detecting Schistosoma mansoni circulating soluble egg antigen (CSEA) was applied in epidemiological studies. The serum CSEA levels were determined for 2 populations with a high prevalence (> 95%) and high intensity of infection as determined by faecal egg counts. In one population (Maniema, Zaire) transmission had been occurring for several decades, while in the other population (Ndombo, Senegal) transmission had started only recently. CSEA could be detected in 88% and 70% of the serum samples from Maniema and Ndombo, respectively.

Patterns of infection with Schistosoma haematobium were studied in 1991 and 1992 in two, lakeside, resettlement communities at the newly established Oyan Reservoir in Ogun State, Nigeria. Prevalence and intensity of S. haematobium infection and frequency of haematuria and proteinuria all increased markedly from 1991 to 1992, indicating intensive transmission. A study of the rural population of the village of Belumbang, Province of Bali, Indonesia, has been conducted to assess the relationship between intensity of hookworm infection (hookworm egg count) and iron stores, hemoglobin level or hematocrit. The effectiveness of urinalysis reagent strips for haematuria and proteinuria in selecting Schistosoma haematobium egg-positive persons was studied on 426 subjects of all ages in a Kenyan community before and 3 months after treatment with praziquantel. Before and after treatment, the degree of urinary blood or protein and prevalence of egg positives were closely associated. Sera of Sudanese patients with active infections of Schistosoma mansoni or S. haematobium were tested in immunoblots for their reactivity with Mr31/32,000 proteins of adult S. mansoni (Sm31/32). All sera from patients with intestinal (n = 123) and all but one from those with urinary schistosomiasis (n = 35) had antibodies against Sm31/32.
