Nocardiosis in a teaching hospital in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey: treatment and outcome.

Predisposing factors, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, treatment and outcome were analysed for nine consecutive patients with nocardiosis. Predisposing factors were identified in six (67%) of the nine patients. Clinical syndromes of nocardial infection were pulmonary infection (three patients), cerebral infection (five patients) and disseminated infection (one patient). The predominant (60%) species was Nocardia farcinica rather than the Nocardia asteroides complex. Treatment was started empirically, modified according to the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and then continued for 6

Voriconazole proves effective in long-term treatment of a cerebral cryptococcoma in a chronic nephropathic HIV-negative patient, after fluconazole failure.

Although being a rare occurrence, brain cryptococcoma may represent an emerging issue, because of its relationship with a broadening range of risk factors, including malignancies, neutropenia, end-organ failure, bone marrow and solid-organ transplantation, and multiple underlying causes of primary-secondary immunodeficiency. A cerebral cryptococcoma in a chronic nephropathic HIV-negative subject with homocystinuria, completely cured with neurosurgery and voriconazole after fluconazole failure, is described.

Diffusion-weighted MR imaging in intracranial infections.

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (DWMRI) is valuable in the assessment of acute cerebral infarction and may be useful for other diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we present the DWMRI appearance of intracranial infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with clinical diagnosis of CNS infection were reviewed. All patients underwent conventional contrast-enhanced MR examination and DWMRI using single-shot echo-planar imaging at b = 1000 s/mm2. RESULTS: Cerebral abscess, tuberculoma, subdural empyema and epidural abscess were hype

Muslin induced granuloma following wrapping of intracranial aneurysms: the role of infection as an additional precipitating factor. Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Two patients who developed what appeared to be a granulomatous reaction following muslin wrapping of unclipped aneurysms are reported. They presented with cranial nerve palsies and at operation were found to have an abscess around the wrapped aneurysms. In one of these two patients Staphylococcus epidemidis was isolated from the pus. This, together with further evidence from reported cases in the literature, would suggest that infection may play an additional role at least in some cases in the onset of a foreign-body granulomatous reaction seen following wrapping of aneurysms.

Acute pancreatitis due to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.

We have reported a case of sulfonamide-induced acute pancreatitis. A review of the literature showed only eight previously reported cases. Adverse reactions to sulfonamides are well known, but acute pancreatitis is a very serious complication. If evidence of pancreatic involvement occurs during sulfonamide therapy, the medication should be discontinued immediately and, if necessary, be replaced by an alternative. Other causes of pancreatitis must be excluded.

Efficacy assessments of SF001, a next-generation polyene antifungal, in a neutropenic mouse model of invasive fusariosis.

Fusariosis has high mortality rates with limited treatment options. Owing to its rarity, comparative clinical trials are hard to perform. SF001 is a novel, next-generation polyene drug, rationally designed to reduce potential for systemic toxicity, with long-acting, potent, broad-spectrum fungicidal activity. We compared the in vitro activity and in vivo efficacy of SF001 with liposomal amphotericin B (LAMB) in treating immunosuppressed mice infected with hematogenously disseminated fusariosis. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of SF001 and LAMB against Fusarium solani or Fusarium oxy

Myelopathy caused by Cladophialophora bantiana in a dog and a cat.

Cladophialophora bantiana is a neurotropic phaeohyphomycotic fungal organism. The most common neural manifestation of C. bantiana infection is brain abscessation or systemic phaeohyphomycosis. This is the first report of spinal cord dysfunction as the presenting clinical manifestation of this disease in dogs and cats. This report describes two cases of myelopathy caused by C. bantiana infection in a dog and a cat. Case 1, a 10-month-old male entire Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) was presented for acute onset tetraparesis and cervical pain. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a focal, r…

In Silico Subtractive Proteome Analysis to Design Multi-Epitope-Based Subunit Vaccine against Eikenella corrodens.

Eikenella corrodens is a gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium typically found in the oropharynx and respiratory tract of humans. It is responsible for various infections, including head-and-neck infections, pericarditis, and abscesses of the deltoid, perirenal tissue, brain, and liver. Increasing antibiotic resistance requires urgent identification of novel drug targets to fight this bacterium. In this study, subtractive proteomics and immunoinformatics approaches were used to identify the most suitable candidates for multi-epitope vaccine development. A non-homologous and pathogen

Otomastoiditis caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis: case report and literature review.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic Gram-negative bacillus that, although rare in humans, most commonly infects immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. Among the 59 pediatric cases of S. paucimobilis infection reported in the literature, the most common diagnosis involves isolated bacteremia. These cases are related to sporadic or epidemic infections. Death related to this infection occurred in only one case. The authors report a case of an 11-year-old boy with the diagnosis of Sphingomonas paucimobilis otomastoiditis and a thorough review of the literature on this infection in pediat

Diagnosis of Listeria monocytogenes meningoencephalitis by real-time PCR for the hly gene.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial pathogen that can invade the central nervous system (CNS), causing meningoencephalitis and brain abscesses. The diagnosis of CNS listeriosis, based on the isolation of the bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), can be difficult because of previous antibiotic treatment and a low number of bacteria in the CSF. To improve the sensitivity of microbiological diagnosis, we have developed a real-time PCR assay for detecting and quantifying L. monocytogenes DNA in the CSF. The designed primers specifically amplify the L. monocytogenes hly gene, which encodes l…

Mycoplasma bovis-associated suppurative otitis media and pneumonia in bull calves.

Outbreaks of Mycoplasma bovis-associated otitis media and pneumonia occurred on four beef cattle farms in Hokkaido, Japan between 2000 and 2001. The morbidity and mortality were estimated at 8-40 and 30-100%, respectively. Eight calves with bilateral ear droop and exudative otitis media were examined bacteriologically and histopathologically. M. bovis was isolated post mortem from nasal swabs and from the ears, lungs, lymph nodes (cranial and pulmonary), brain and heart of all calves. At necropsy, suppurative exudates were observed in the tympanic bullae of all cases. Numerous abscesses were a
