Two-dimensional ECG-based cardiac arrhythmia classification using DSE-ResNet.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is mostly used for the clinical diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmia due to its simplicity, non-invasiveness, and reliability. Recently, many models based on the deep neural networks have been applied to the automatic classification of cardiac arrhythmia with great success. However, most models independently extract the internal features of each lead in the 12-lead ECG during the training phase, resulting in a lack of inter-lead features. Here, we propose a general model based on the two-dimensional ECG and ResNet with detached squeeze-and-excitation modules (DSE-ResNet) to

iCycle: Integrated, multicriterial beam angle, and profile optimization for generation of coplanar and noncoplanar IMRT plans.

PURPOSE: To introduce iCycle, a novel algorithm for integrated, multicriterial optimization of beam angles, and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) profiles. METHODS: A multicriterial plan optimization with iCycle is based on a prescription called wish-list, containing hard constraints and objectives with ascribed priorities. Priorities are ordinal parameters used for relative importance ranking of the objectives. The higher an objective priority is, the higher the probability that the corresponding objective will be met. Beam directions are selected from an input set of candidate directi

Brain computer interfaces, a review.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a hardware and software communications system that permits cerebral activity alone to control computers or external devices. The immediate goal of BCI research is to provide communications capabilities to severely disabled people who are totally paralyzed or 'locked in' by neurological neuromuscular disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, brain stem stroke, or spinal cord injury. Here, we review the state-of-the-art of BCIs, looking at the different steps that form a standard BCI: signal acquisition, preprocessing or signal enhancement, feature ext

Dual-energy CT: a promising new technique for assessment of the musculoskeletal system.

OBJECTIVE: Dual-energy CT (DECT) characterizes the chemical composition of material according to its differential x-ray attenuation at two different energy levels. Applications of DECT in musculoskeletal imaging include imaging of bone marrow edema, tendons, and ligaments and the use of monoenergetic techniques to minimize metal prosthesis beam-attenuating artifacts. CONCLUSION: The most validated application of DECT is undoubtedly its noninvasive and highly specific ability for confirming the presence of monosodium urate deposits in the assessment of gout.

In-vivo measurement of cortical morphology: means and meanings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Study of the variability of the cortical mantle thickness is now a key issue in neuroimaging. Here we describe a more recent trend aiming at the study of the variability of the cortical folding morphology. RECENT FINDINGS: Computerized three-dimensional versions of gyrification index and other morphometric features dedicated to the folding patterns are modified in psychiatric syndromes and neurologic disorders. These observations provide new insights into the mechanisms involved in abnormal development or abnormal aging. SUMMARY: Quantification of the folding morphology wi

Psoralen and bergapten: in silico metabolism and toxicophoric analysis of drugs used to treat vitiligo.

PURPOSE: To discuss the contribution of psoralen and bergapten metabolites on psoralens toxicity. METHODS: Computational chemistry prediction of metabolic reactions and toxicophoric groups based on the expert systems Derek and Meteor. RESULTS: a total of 15 metabolites were suggested for both psoralen and bergapten based on phase 1 and 2 biotransformations until the 3rd generation. Five toxicophoric substructures were shared among psoralen, bergapten and their corresponding metabolites; one toxicophoric marker (resorcinol) was only identified in bergapten and its biotransformation products.

Service-oriented subscription management of medical decision data in the intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVES: This paper addresses the design of a platform for the management of medical decision data in the ICU. Whenever new medical data from laboratories or monitors is available or at fixed times, the appropriate medical support services are activated and generate a medical alert or suggestion to the bedside terminal, the physician's PDA, smart phone or mailbox. Since future ICU systems will rely ever more on medical decision support, a generic and flexible subscription platform is of high importance. METHODS: Our platform is designed based on the principles of service-oriented architect

Interpretation module for screening normal ECG.

This work concerns the development of a module for automatic recognition of normal ECGs, i.e. those whose waves morphology do not suggest physiopathological or structural heart alterations. Such a unit constitutes the central part of an administrative system under development which will aid in the management of ECG testing in the primary care delivery level in Chile. This system greatly contributes to the optimal allocation of resources in order to increase the test delivery coverage and to reduce the social and private costs involved. A main feature of the system is that it operates through t

Active Thermochemical Tables: Enthalpies of Formation of Bromo- and Iodo-Methanes, Ethenes and Ethynes.

The thermochemistry of halocarbon species containing iodine and bromine is examined through an extensive interplay between new Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) style composite methods and a detailed analysis of all available experimental and theoretical determinations using the thermochemical network that underlies the Active Thermochemical Tables (ATcT). From the computational viewpoint, a slower convergence of the components of composite thermochemistry methods is observed relative to species that solely contain first row elements, leading to a higher computational expense for achieving comparabl

Image-guided periacetabular osteotomy: computer-assisted navigation compared with the conventional technique: a randomized study of 36 patients followed for 2 years.

BACKGROUND: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is an effective but technically demanding surgical procedure. We evaluated the efficiency of computer-assisted navigation in PAO and compared it with the traditional approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a randomized study of 36 patients undergoing PAO using either the CT-based, computer-assisted navigation technique or the conventional approach. The operative details, radiographic results, and functional outcomes were compared between groups. RESULTS: Patients in the conventional surgery group required an average of 4.4 (2-7) images of intra

Boil water notices as health-risk communication: risk perceptions, efficacy, and compliance during winter storm Uri.

Winter Storm Uri was a disaster that impacted much of the United States during February of 2021. During and after the storm, Texas and Oklahoma experienced massive power grid failures. This led to cascading impacts, including water system disruptions and many boil water notices (BWNs). The breakdown of some communication channels and the inability to enact protective actions due to power outages, as well as travel limitations on public roads, complicated the dissemination and implementation of notifications. This research examined individuals' perceptions of risk, water quality, and BWNs durin

Towards Recommendations for the Universal Design of Online Authentication Systems.

There is a growing body of research on the problems older and disabled people face with authentication systems and a range of solutions have been developed. However, this research has not been integrated across user groups and solutions usually only target one or two groups. This research has attempted to integrate the empirical research findings across studies conducted with people with visual, physical, and intellectual disabilities, people dyslexia and older people. It proposes an initial set of 15 recommendations for the universal design of authentication systems. Four recommendations are

Recurrence quantification analysis for fine-scale characterisation of arrhythmic patterns in cardiac tissue.

This paper uses recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) combined with entropy measures and organization indices to characterize arrhythmic patterns and dynamics in computer simulations of cardiac tissue. We performed different simulations of cardiac tissues of sizes comparable to the human heart atrium. In these simulations, we observed four classic arrhythmic patterns: a spiral wave anchored to a highly fibrotic region resulting in sustained re-entry, a meandering spiral wave, fibrillation, and a spiral wave anchored to a scar region that breaks up into wavelets away from the main rotor. A d

Optimization of Arrhythmia-based ECG-lead Selection for Computer-interpreted Heart Rhythm Classification.

The 12-lead ECG only has 8 independent ECG leads, which leads to diagnostic redundancy when using all 12 leads for heart arrhythmias classification. We have previously developed a deep learning (DL)-based computer-interpreted ECG (CIE) approach to identify an optimal 4-lead ECG subset for classifying heart arrhythmias. However, the clinical diagnostic criteria of cardiac arrhythmia types are often lead-specific, so this study is going to explore the selection of arrhythmia-based ECG-lead subsets rather than one general optimal ECG-lead subset, which could improve the classification performance

A 1D model characterizing the role of spatiotemporal contraction distributions on lymph transport.

Lymphedema is a condition in which lymph transport is compromised. The factors that govern the timing of lymphatic contractions are largely unknown; however, these factors likely play a central role in lymphatic health. Computational models have proven useful in quantifying changes in lymph transport; nevertheless, there is still much unknown regarding the regulation of contractions. The purpose of this paper is to utilize computational modeling to examine the role of pacemaking activity in lymph transport. A 1D fluid-solid modeling framework was utilized to describe the interaction between th

Applications of brain-computer interfaces in neurodegenerative diseases.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide the central nervous system with channels of direct communication to the outside world, without having to go through the peripheral nervous system. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are notoriously incurable and burdensome medical conditions that will result in progressive deterioration of the nervous system. The applications of BCIs in NDs have been studied for decades now through different approaches, resulting in a considerable amount of literature in all related areas. In this study, we begin by introducing BCIs and proceed by explaining the principle
