Guidelines for sexually transmitted diseases.

These guidelines for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) were established after careful deliberation by a group of experts and staff of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Commentary received after dissemination of preliminary documents to a large group of physicians was also considered. Certain aspects of these guidelines represent the best judgment of experts. The guidelines should not be construed as rules, but rather as a source of guidance within the United States. This is particularly true for topics that are controversial or based on limited data.

The impact of Germany's human papillomavirus immunization program on HPV-related anogenital diseases: a retrospective analysis of claims data from statutory health insurances.

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, responsible for multiple HPV-related diseases, including almost all cervical cancers. The highly effective HPV vaccination has been recommended under the German HPV national immunization program (NIP) since 2007 and is reimbursed by health insurances. Vaccination uptake rates, however, remain suboptimal and data on the real-world impact of HPV vaccination in Germany are lacking. This study aims to demonstrate the population-level impact of Germany's NIP on HPV-related anogenital diseases among young women.

Comorbidities associated with HPV infection among people living with HIV-1 in the southeastern US: a retrospective clinical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The southeastern US is an epicenter for incident HIV in the US with high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) co-infections. However, epidemiologies of HPV-associated clinical conditions (CC) among people living with HIV-1 infection (PLWH) are not fully known. METHODS: Electronic medical records (EMR) of PLWH attending one of the leading HIV clinics in the southeastern US between 2006 and 2018 were reviewed and analyzed. The retrospective study was nested within the University of Alabama at Birmingham HIV clinical cohort, which has electronically collected over 7000 PLWH's cli

Effect of Immunomodulatory Supplements Based on Echinacea Angustifolia and Echinacea Purpurea on the Posttreatment Relapse Incidence of Genital Condylomatosis: A Prospective Randomized Study.

Introduction. HPV infection is a highly infectious disease; about 65% of partners of individuals with genital warts will develop genital condylomatosis. Only in 20-30% it regresses spontaneously and relapse rates range deeply (9-80%). Echinacea extracts possess antiviral and immunomodulator activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy, using a formulation based on HPVADL18® (on dry extracts of 200 mg Echinacea Purpurea (EP) roots plus E. Angustifolia (EA)), on the posttreatment relapse incidence of genital condylomatosis. Materials and Methods. It is a prospect

Ranpirnase eradicates human papillomavirus in cultured cells and heals anogenital warts in a Phase I study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomaviruses (HPV), the causative agents of anogenital warts, are the most prevalent sexually transmitted infectious agents, and wart treatment poses a persistent challenge. We assessed the safety and efficacy of treating HPV with ranpirnase, an endoribonuclease from the northern leopard frog that has been used extensively in Phase III oncology trials. METHODS: As initial verification of ranpirnase antiviral activity, we assessed its ability to eliminate papillomaviruses in cultured cells. To further assess its feasibility for treating anogenital warts in humans, we perf

Disease burden of human papillomavirus infection in the Netherlands, 1989-2014: the gap between females and males is diminishing.

PURPOSE: Besides cervical cancer, HPV infection is linked to a multitude of diseases in both males and females, suggesting that vaccination programmes should be re-evaluated, with a judicious assessment made of the disease burden stratified by sex, age, and genotype. Projections of burden into the near future are also needed to provide a benchmark for evaluating the impact of vaccination programmes, and to assess the need for scaling-up preventive measures. METHODS: Using the disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) measure, we estimated the total HPV-associated disease burden in the Netherlands

[Prevalence of intimate partner violence and associated factors after disclosing the diagnosis of a sexually transmissible disease].

The objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with intimate partner violence after disclosing the diagnosis of sexually transmissible diseases (STDs) in Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. This cross-sectional study enrolled 221 individuals treated at STD clinics. Multivariate logistic regression was performed. A total of 28.1% of individuals committed some type of intimate partner violence after disclosure of the diagnosis. Committing intimate partner violence was associated with alcohol use (OR = 2.79; 95%CI: 1.25-6.22; p = 0.012), the partner having relations with someone el

A reduced national incidence of anogenital warts in young Danish men and women after introduction of a national quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccination programme for young women--an ecological study.

In January 2009 the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was included in the Danish childhood vaccination programme for girls aged 12 years. A catch-up programme for girls up to 16 years of age was started a couple of months earlier. Based on national register data, anogenital wart (AGW) incidences between January 2001 and December 2011 were estimated. We used χ2 analysis to identify significant trends in proportions of patients diagnosed with AGW in the period before and after inclusion of the HPV vaccine in the program. The development of chlamydia infections was included in this study as a pr

Diversity of HPV types in cancerous and pre-cancerous penile lesions of South African men: implications for future HPV vaccination strategies.

This study reports the detection of HPV types from cancerous and pre-cancerous penile lesions that were diagnosed histologically. Sixty-six (22 pre-cancerous and 44 cancerous lesions) tissue biopsies, received between 2004 and 2011 by the Anatomical Pathology Department at Dr. George Mukhari Hospital were selected for this study. Total DNA was extracted and genotyped using type specific real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for 18 HPV types. Of 66 samples, only 51 were included in the analysis. Overall, HPV 11 (50.9%) and HPV 16 (49.1%) showed almost similar incidence in the

Genomic diversity of low-risk human papillomavirus genotypes HPV 40, HPV 42, HPV 43, and HPV 44.

In order to investigate the genomic diversity of low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes, a total of 108 isolates of HPV 40, HPV 42, HPV 43, or HPV 44, obtained from anal swabs or tissue specimens of patients with anogenital warts, and cervical swabs of women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia of different grades, were analyzed. The characterization of genomic variants was established by sequencing one third of the viral genome and analysis of three different genomic regions: L1, LCR, and E6. Maximum variant divergence accounted for 0.4-1.1% of the investigated genomic segments. Sev

Knowledge of human papillomavirus: differences by self-reported treatment for genital warts and sociodemographic characteristics.

The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge about human papillomavirus (HPV) in individuals with genital warts compared with women from the general population without genital warts. Human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge among women reporting treatment for genital warts compared with HPV knowledge in women reporting no treatment was assessed using data from the population-based 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Three percent (N = 97) of women answered "yes" and 97% (N = 3,450) "no" to "Have you ever been treated for venereal warts or condyloma?" Women who reported treat

Immunostimulation to reduce recurrence after surgery for anal condyloma acuminata: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

AIM: Human papillomavirus is the most common cause of sexually transmitted disease. It is associated with immunosuppression and shows a marked tendency to recur. We investigated a natural immunostimulant aimed to reduce recurrence. METHOD: A randomized controlled study was carried out including 261 patients allocated to surgical excision alone (control group; n = 122) and surgical excision plus postoperative immunostimulation for 30 days with a natural product (STET; study group; n = 139). Patients with HIV positivity were excluded. All patients gave fully informed consent. RESULTS: The pati

Surgical excision of extensive anal condylomata not associated with risk of anal stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of extensive and confluent anal condylomata results in large open wounds, which in other contexts of anorectal surgery (e.g., hemorrhoidectomy), have been associated with a relevant risk of stricture formation. The aim of our study was therefore to revisit the issue and assess this risk and the general morbidity in patients undergoing extensive excision and fulguration of anal warts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of 41 consecutive patients undergoing with excision/fulguration of extensive, i.e., >50% confluent anal condylomata were retrospectively reviewed. E

[A new classification of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN)].

Vulvar cancer is a rare disease and its screening is depending on the quality and the relevance of our clinical examination. Incidence of vulvar cancer and especially precancerous lesions, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasias (VIN), increased during these last years. The new terminology of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia will help us to identify high risk groups which could develop a cancer: usual and differentiated VIN. An early diagnosis is essential to propose an adequate treatment. Management is a major point according to the rising incidence of these lesions in younger women. Until we can o

Prevention strategies against the human papillomavirus: the effectiveness of vaccination.

It has been clearly established that sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are the major cause of genital warts and cervical cancer and are a contributing factor in the development of other types of anogenital cancers. There is a higher risk of HPV infection with an increasing number of sexual partners. Health education measures aimed at improving the use of condoms, reducing the number of sexual partners and promoting safer sex strategies have been employed with the goal of decreasing the transmission of HPV. Of these intervention strategies, promotion of condom use has b
