Associations between dietary fat-soluble vitamins and pulmonary function and airway inflammation: A cross-sectional study.

Pulmonary function and airway inflammation are key indicators of respiratory health. Dietary factors, particularly fat-soluble vitamins, may be related to these outcomes, yet their associations in general populations remain inadequately characterized. We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2012, including 9328 adults. Fat-soluble vitamin intake (A, D, E, K) was assessed via 24-hour dietary recalls. Spirometry measures (forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in the first second [FEV1], forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of vital capac

Impact of oral bacterial lysates on asthma control and immune parameters in children: evidence from an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: The role of oral bacterial lysates (OBLs) as adjuvant immunomodulatory therapy in pediatric asthma requires clarification. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates their efficacy and safety. METHODS: We searched eight databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in children comparing standard asthma therapy plus OBLs versus standard therapy/placebo. Primary outcomes were clinical (wheezing/infection frequency, symptom improvement time, treatment efficacy) and lung function parameters. Secondary outcomes included immune biomarkers and adverse events. Random-effects m

Real-time breath analysis for COPD risk assessment in smokers using a ZnO/SnO₂ heterojunction sensor integrated with support vector machine.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressively debilitating and life-threatening respiratory condition that has long been attributed to exposure to airborne toxic substances like carbon monoxide (CO), a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress, especially in smoking individuals. To address the need for a real-time and non-invasive method that can detect this life-threatening condition, a wearable diagnostic device is developed in this work based on a Z/S heterostructure thin-film gas sensor that can detect exhaled CO at a temperature as low as 37 °C. This gas sensor was prepared

Validating a novel driving simulation-based MWT against the standard MWT in an OSA-cohort challenged by CPAP-withdrawal (DS-MWT2) - Protocol for a monocentric, controlled, randomized, crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a major yet under-recognized contributor to road traffic accidents. Traditional diagnostic tools, such as the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), assess wakefulness under passive conditions but may not accurately reflect real-world driving risks. To address this gap, we have piloted a Driving Simulation-based MWT (DS-MWT), designed to evaluate sleepiness in an ecologically valid driving scenario. The present study aims to validate the novel DS-MWT against the classical MWT in a functionally relevant cohort of patients with obstructive sleep

Fixed airway obstruction and bronchodilator responsiveness phenotypes in severe asthma population from SANI registry.

BACKGROUND: Data on asthma with fixed airway obstruction (FAO) are heterogeneous due to different and misleading definitions. Describing the FAO phenotype has significant implications for severe asthma (SA) comprehension. OBJECTIVE: To characterise SA patients with FAO in the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry at baseline, and to compare with those with reversible airway obstruction (bronchodilator responsiveness, BDR). The potential for re-evaluating FAO or BDR in the follow-up was explored. METHODS: FAO was defined as a forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1)/forced

Efficacy of Smoking Cessation Interventions among People with HIV in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) smoke at much higher rates than the general population, resulting in higher risk for tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. The efficacy of smoking cessation interventions among people with HIV in lower-middle-income countries remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, 2 × 2 factorial design trial based in Nairobi, Kenya, to evaluate the efficacy of bupropion versus placebo, and a culturally tailored behavioral cessation therapy, called Positively Smoke Free (PSF), versus standard of care for people with HIV who smoke. Identification and Classification of Images in e-Cigarette-Related Content on TikTok: Unsupervised Machine Learning Image Clustering Approach.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies identified e-cigarette content on popular video and image-based social media platforms such as TikTok. While machine learning approaches have been increasingly used with text-based social media data, image-based analysis such as image-clustering has been rarely used on TikTok. Image clustering can identify underlying patterns and structures across large sets of images, enabling more streamlined distillation and analysis of visual data on TikTok. This study used image-clustering approaches to examine e-cigarette-related images on TikTok. METHODS: We searched for 13

Are People More Likely to Vape or Smoke Indoors? A Population Survey of Adults in England.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, people smoke cigarettes outdoors and avoid exposing bystanders to harm. People may not have the same motivation to vape outdoors since e-cigarettes, unlike cigarettes, do not create side stream emissions and exhaled aerosol contains fewer toxicants than secondhand smoke. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and correlates of vaping and smoking indoors among adults in England. AIMS AND METHODS: Data came from the Health Survey for England 2019, a cross-sectional household survey. Adults who vape or smoke (N = 1530) were asked whether they had vaped or smoked ind

Defining within-host SARS-CoV-2 RNA viral load kinetics during acute COVID-19 infection within different respiratory compartments and their respective associations with host infectiousness: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how RNA viral load changes (viral load kinetics) during acute infection in SARS-CoV-2 can help to identify when and which patients are most infectious. We seek to summarise existing data on the longitudinal RNA viral load kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 sampled from different parts of the respiratory tract (nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, saliva and exhaled breath) and how this may vary with age, sex, ethnicity, immune status, disease severity, vaccination, treatment and virus variant. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis, using studies

Genetic susceptibility to airway inflammation and exposure to short-term outdoor air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a large environmental health hazard whose exposure and health effects are unequally distributed among individuals. This is, at least in part, due to gene-environment interactions, but few studies exist. Thus, the current study aimed to explore genetic susceptibility to airway inflammation from short-term air pollution exposure through mechanisms of gene-environment interaction involving the SFTPA, GST and NOS genes. METHODS: Five thousand seven hundred two adults were included. The outcome measure was fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), at 50 and 270 ml/s. Ex

The Long-Term Impact of Early-Life Tuberculosis Disease on Child Health: A Prospective Birth Cohort Study.

Rationale: There is growing concern that post-tuberculosis disease (TB) sequelae and morbidity are substantial, but no studies have controlled for preexisting factors before disease. Whether children have post-TB morbidity is not well characterized. Objectives: To assess the effect of a TB diagnosis on wheezing episodes, lung function, and anthropometric measurements among children enrolled in a prospective birth cohort study in South Africa. Methods: We prospectively followed children from birth through 5 years for TB using diagnostic tests including chest radiography and repeated induced spu

DEL-1, as an anti-neutrophil transepithelial migration molecule, inhibits airway neutrophilic inflammation in asthma.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil migration into the airways is a key process in neutrophilic asthma. Developmental endothelial locus-1 (DEL-1), an extracellular matrix protein, is a neutrophil adhesion inhibitor that attenuates neutrophilic inflammation. METHODS: Levels of DEL-1 were measured in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and serum in asthma patients by ELISA. DEL-1 modulation of neutrophil adhesion and transepithelial migration was examined in a co-culture model in vitro. The effects of DEL-1-adenoviral vector-mediated overexpression on ovalbumin/lipopolysaccharide (OVA/LPS)-induced neutrophilic

Optimization of mesh generation for geometric accuracy, robustness, and efficiency of biomechanical-model-based deformable image registration.

BACKGROUND: Successful generation of biomechanical-model-based deformable image registration (BM-DIR) relies on user-defined parameters that dictate surface mesh quality. The trial-and-error process to determine the optimal parameters can be labor-intensive and hinder DIR efficiency and clinical workflow. PURPOSE: To identify optimal parameters in surface mesh generation as boundary conditions for a BM-DIR in longitudinal liver and lung CT images to facilitate streamlined image registration processes. METHODS: Contrast-enhanced CT images of 29 colorectal liver cancer patients and end-exhale
