Susceptibility of Mansonia uniformis to Brugia malayi microfilariae from infected domestic cat.

Microfilariae of Brugia malayi is transmitted to man and other susceptible hosts via mosquito. The transmission of B. malayi from cat to man by Ma. uniformis bite has never been reported. The Ma. uniformis mosquito is the normal vector for Wuchereria bancrofti but has never been reported as a vector for B. malayi, or a susceptible host for the growth and development of the microfilariae of B. malayi. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of B. malayi in Mansonia uniformis after feeding on the blood of an infected cat in the laboratory. The B. malayi infected cat was identifi

West Nile virus and North America: an unfolding story.

Before the introduction of the West Nile virus (WNV) into the United States of America (USA) in 1999, conditions in North America were ideal for an arboviral epidemic. Such factors as the large, susceptible and non-immune animal and human populations, the presence of competent vectors, increasing international travel and commerce, existing methods for rapid dissemination and an ill-prepared animal and public health infrastructure all combined to create the essential elements for a severe animal and public health crisis--the 'perfect microbial storm'. The introduction of WNV into New York City

[Stratification of a hyperendemic city in hemorrhagic dengue].

Any effort to control dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) faces a number of challenges. Among these are the great environmental heterogeneity of homes and neighborhoods in urban centers where the primary dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, breeds, as well as shortages of resources and of personnel trained in mosquito control. Adequate epidemiological surveillance could serve as a basis to begin to stratify urban communities and identify the areas in them where control efforts should be focused. In this study we stratified Maracay, Venezuela, a city with hyperendemic dengue hemorrhagic fever, using a geog

Insecticide cross-resistance spectra and underlying resistance mechanisms of Sri Lankan anopheline vectors of malaria.

Present status of insecticide resistance was investigated in two major vectors of malaria; An. culicifacies and An. subpictus, collected from a high malaria transmission area in Sri Lanka during 1996/1998. Adult and larval bioassays were carried out to obtain log-probit mortality lines for malathion, propoxur, permethrin and chlorpyrifos. Respective LD50 values were 4.45%, 0.002%, 0.16% and 0.001% for An. culicifacies and 0.66%, 0.004%, 0.004% and 0.04% for An. subpictus. Adults were also tested for WHO standard discriminating dosages of malathion, propoxur, permethrin, DDT, cypermethrin, delt

The design of a community-based health education intervention for the control of Aedes aegypti.

This report describes the process used to develop locally appropriate educational materials and to implement the education component of a community-based Aedes aegypti control program in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The process is broken into five stages: formative research, developing recommendations for behavior change, development of educational messages, development and production of educational materials, and distribution of the materials. Appropriate terminology and taxonomies for dengue were obtained from open in-depth interviews; baseline data from a knowledge, beliefs, and practices quest

Development and validation of dengue virus envelope protein domain III IgG antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

INTRODUCTION: The global incidence of Dengue virus (DENV) infections has significantly increased in recent decades, becoming a public health emergency of global concern. Diagnostic tools for DENV infection include detection of the virus, viral RNA, or viral antigens, which are usually cumbersome or require sophisticated medical facilities and trained personnel. Serological tests are the most widely used methods to detect dengue infection due to low cost and operational simplicity. The detection of antibodies (IgM and IgG) in the blood of an infected individual is an indirect method of diagnosi

Recombinant Beauveria bassiana expressing Bacillus thuringiensis toxin Cyt1Aa: a promising approach for enhancing Aedes mosquito control.

UNLABELLED: The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana provides an eco-friendly substitute to chemical insecticides for mosquito control. Nevertheless, its widespread application has been hindered by its comparatively slow efficacy in eliminating mosquitoes. To augment the potency of B. bassiana against Aedes mosquitoes, a novel recombinant strain, Bb-Cyt1Aa, was developed by incorporating the Bacillus thuringiensis toxin gene Cyt1Aa into B. bassiana. The virulence of Bb-Cyt1Aa was evaluated against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus using insect bioassays. Compared to the wild-type (WT) s

New World screwworm in livestock production systems: biosecurity, economic considerations, and management for cattle, sheep, goat, horse, and swine producers.

New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a transboundary obligate myiasis-causing parasite that poses serious threats to livestock production through infestation of living tissue, rapid lesion progression, animal suffering, and substantial economic loss. Between June 3 and June 16, 2026, the US confirmed 12 cases of New World screwworm in domestic animals across Texas and New Mexico, marking the first detections in production livestock in the continental US since 1966. Cases have involved cattle, sheep, goats, and a dog across multiple counties, with all 12 classified as active and no

Gut microbiota profiles as potential indicators of irradiation-induced quality loss in mass-reared Aedes albopictus males.

Aim: The Sterile Insect Technique is a promising method for Aedes albopictus control, but its effectiveness hinges on male quality, which may be compromised during mass-rearing and irradiation. Reliable biological indicators capable of reflecting irradiation-induced quality loss remain limited. Gut microbiota regulates mosquito development, immunity, and metabolism and may therefore provide potential indicators of sterile male quality. This study explored whether gut microbiota composition can reflect irradiation-induced quality impairment in males of a long-term (over 3 years) mass-reared Ae.

Inferring tephritid fly pupal development stage using non-invasive near infrared imaging and machine learning classification.

Insect pupae change morphologically (e.g., pigmentation of eyes, wings, setae and legs) during the intrapuparial period. Knowledge on the physiological age of pupae and their emergence are important parameters for the control of agriculturally important Tephritid flies. Traditional methods for determining age require dissecting the puparium, thus killing the specimen. Therefore, non-invasive and more ethical methods to determine physiological age are needed, especially if individual pupae are followed throughout their development. Furthermore, machine learning methods can be employed to detect

Evolution of Z chromosome in Ostrinia furnacalis: dosage compensation, sex-biased gene expression and evolutionary rate of Z-linked genes.

BACKGROUND: Sex chromosome evolution and its related regulatory genes play a significant role in insect physiological processes such as sex determination, growth and development, and reproduction, with target genes having potential application in the research and development of technologies such as RNA interference (RNAi) pesticides. However, Z chromosome evolution in Ostrinia furnacalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is not clear. Here, RNA sequencing, molecular evolutionary analysis, and RNAi were used to study Z chromosome evolution and the function of Male-specific lethal (MSL) complex ge

Evolutionary novelty shapes predator-mediated insect herbivory in exotic oaks.

Phylogenetic distance between exotic and native plant species is a well documented predictor of insect herbivory, but whether it also influences predator-mediated (top-down) control remains unresolved. In this study, we manipulated predator access on 18 exotic oak (Quercus) species grown in a common garden, spanning a gradient of phylogenetic distance to four european oaks (Q. robur, Q. petraea, Q. suber, or Q. pyrenaica). We excluded three predator guild treatments: ground-dwelling arthropod predators (hereafter ant exclusion, because the sticky-barrier method used primarily excludes ants), v

Effects of Concurrent Training plus Cricket Protein Hydrolysate Supplementation on Blood Pressure, Arterial Stiffness, and Heart Rate Variability in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness and impaired cardiac autonomic regulation contribute to cardiovascular risk in older adults with elevated blood pressure (BP). However, the cardiovascular effects of combining concurrent training with insect-derived protein supplementation remain unclear. This study examined the effects of concurrent training and hydrolyzed house cricket protein supplementation on BP, arterial stiffness, and heart rate variability (HRV) in older adults with elevated BP. METHODS: Forty-five older adults (64.7±5.8 years) were randomized to placebo control (PLA), hydrolyzed house c

Response of the surface-active beetle community (Coleoptera) to mixed-conifer forest restoration thinning and burning treatments in northern New Mexico, USA.

Forests in the western United States are experiencing increasing stresses from more frequent stand-replacing fires, insect outbreaks, and droughts. To mitigate these phenomena, forest managers are increasingly employing forest fuels management operations (tree thinning and prescribed fires) to reduce fire severities and inter-tree competition for water and soil nutrients. While such forest restoration programs have proven effective, the impacts on forest arthropod communities are largely unreported. In this 6-year case study, we examined the response of a surface-active (epigeic) beetle commun

A balanced omega-6:3 fatty acid diet can shield honey bee cognition from pesticide impairment.

Among the stressors honey bees are exposed to in agricultural settings, poor diet and pesticide exposure are two of the most prevalent and concerning. We tested whether a balanced omega-6:3 fatty acid pollen-substitute diet could increase the resilience of honey bees to the harms of pesticide exposure, focusing on measuring bee survival and olfactory learning. We raised bees on a diet either balanced in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (1:1 ratio) or unbalanced (5:1) for 2 weeks before providing them with either 10 nmol l-1 thiamethoxam (TMX) in 2.0 mol l-1 sucrose solution or a control (pure 2

Fine stripe patterns disrupt honey bee landings via spatial aliasing.

Visual patterns are widely deployed as non-chemical insect deterrents, yet the visual mechanism remains unresolved. We tested whether spatial aliasing, arising from a mismatch between stripe geometry and compound-eye sampling, disrupts landing control. Using trained honey bees (Apis mellifera) and three-dimensional trajectory tracking, we quantified search and landing/entry performance across stripe scale and orientation. Stripe scale produced a non-monotonic behavioural response: disruption was greatest at intermediate stripe widths (~ 0.95-0.475 cm), where search times peaked and performance

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profiling of Glycosidases, Lipases, and Proteases from Invasive Asian Palm Weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus.

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is a destructive, invasive pest to a diverse range of palm plantations globally. Commonly used broad-range chemical insecticides for insect control pose high risks to non-target organisms, humans, and the environment. A bio-rational approach of screening natural small-molecule inhibitors that specifically target R. ferrugineus proteins critical to its life processes can pave the way for developing novel bioinsecticides. Digestive enzymes (DEs), which impair feeding on plants (herbivory), are promising targets. We generated de novo transcriptomes,…

Mosquito Exposure Risks in Equine Facilities: An Environmental-Managerial Assessment in Western Romania.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne zoonosis with recurrent equine and human cases in Romania. Horses, although dead-end hosts, act as sentinels for local viral circulation. Farm-level risk conditions remain under-characterized. This pilot, exploratory cross-sectional study assessed 42 equine facilities in western Romania (2024). A standardized 10-item checklist was applied and a Composite Environmental Risk Score (CERS) (0-10, unweighted) was computed per facility. Spatial analysis in QGIS included distances to nearby water bodies. No serological or entomological data were collected; th

Flies as carriers of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria in Nigerian hospitals: A workflow for surveillance of AMR bacteria carried by arthropod pests in hospital settings.

The dissemination of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria by flies in hospitals is concerning as nosocomial AMR infections pose a significant threat to public health. This threat is compounded in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by several factors, including limited resources for sufficient infection prevention and control (IPC) practices and high numbers of flies in tropical climates. In this pilot study, 1,396 flies were collected between August and September 2022 from eight tertiary care hospitals in six cities (Abuja, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos and Sokoto) in Nigeria. Flies were
