Polymorphisms and haplotypes in the interleukin-4 gene are associated with chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population.

BACKGROUND: Some haplotypes in the interleukin-4 (IL4) gene were reported to influence IL-4 cytokine production and were associated with inflammatory diseases. Association studies focusing on IL4 gene polymorphisms and periodontal disease provided conflicting results. The aim of this study is to investigate whether IL4 gene polymorphisms and haplotypes were related to chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population. METHODS: The polymorphisms -590(C/T) and +33(C/T) in the IL4 gene were identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment-length polymorphism methods; the vari

Spatial distribution and cluster analysis of sexual risk behaviors reported by young men in Kisumu, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The well-established connection between HIV risk behavior and place of residence points to the importance of geographic clustering in the potential transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). METHODS: To investigate the geospatial distribution of prevalent sexually transmitted infections and sexual behaviors in a sample of 18-24 year-old sexually active men in urban and rural areas of Kisumu, Kenya, we mapped the residences of 649 men and conducted spatial cluster analysis. Spatial distribution of the study participants was assessed in terms of the demogra

Review of biomarker systems as an alternative for early diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma.

Early diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma is bound to boost the long-term endurance rate of the patients. Most ovarian tumors happen post menopause when the ovaries have no vital operation and therefore irregular ovarian role causes no signs. According to Muinao T. et al. (Heliyon. 5(12):e02826, 2019), if we consider the frequency of ovarian carcinoma to be moderate, a screening technique must accomplish a base specificity of 99.6% and sensitivity of over 75%. The classification and approval of early diagnostic biomarkers explicit to ovarian carcinoma are essentially required. Prevailing methods fo

"Tomydesis" might be a reliable technique for lesions of the long head of the biceps tendon associated with rotator cuff tears: a minimum 6-month prospective clinical follow-up study.

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical outcomes of self-locking T-tenotomy called "tomydesis" to three different techniques of tenodesis for lesions of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) associated with rotator cuff tears. HYPOTHESIS: Tomydesis could provide similar clinical outcomes than the other LHBT tenodesis techniques. METHODS: This prospective multicentre study included 77 patients who underwent rotator cuff repair concomitant with one of four surgical techniques on the LHBT. All patients had a minimum of 6-month follow-up post-operatively. Outcomes were evaluated based on the Consta

Population pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin in neonates and young infants less than three months of age.

Ciprofloxacin is used in neonates with suspected or documented Gram-negative serious infections. Currently, its use is off-label partly because of lack of pharmacokinetic studies. Within the FP7 EU project TINN (Treat Infection in NeoNates), our aim was to evaluate the population pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin in neonates and young infants <3 months of age and define the appropriate dose in order to optimize ciprofloxacin treatment in this vulnerable population. Blood samples were collected from neonates treated with ciprofloxacin and concentrations were quantified by high-pressure liquid c

Distribution of ABL and BCR genes in cell nuclei of normal and irradiated lymphocytes.

Using dual-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) combined with two-dimensional (2D) image analysis, the locations of ABL and BCR genes in cell nuclei were studied. The center of nucleus-to-gene and mutual distances of ABL and BCR genes in interphase nuclei of nonstimulated and stimulated lymphocytes as well as in lymphocytes stimulated after irradiation were determined. We found that, after stimulation, the ABL and BCR genes move towards the membrane, their mutual distances increase, and the shortest distance between heterologous ABL and BCR genes increases. The distribution of the s

Evaluating the effect of heart and respiratory rate measurement errors on the ability to predict the outcome of high flow nasal cannula therapy: a multi-centre study.

BACKGROUND: The respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) index, and machine learning (ML) models, are promising approaches to help clinicians identify earlier those patients at risk of failing high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy. Respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) are key inputs to these models, but their measurement in a hospital environment may be subject to significant errors. The effect of these errors on the accuracy of HFNC outcome predictions is currently unknown. METHODS: We evaluated the capability of a recently-proposed ML model called Tabular Prior-data Fitted Network (TabPFN),

Comparing single and multiple imputation strategies for harmonizing substance use data across HIV-related cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Although standardized measures to assess substance use are available, most studies use variations of these measures making it challenging to harmonize data across studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different strategies to impute missing substance use data that may result as part of data harmonization procedures. METHODS: We used self-reported substance use data collected between August 2014 and June 2019 from 528 participants with 2,389 study visits in a cohort study of substance use and HIV. We selected a low (heroin), medium (methamphetamine), and

Adjusting for comorbidity in incidence-based DALY calculations: an individual-based modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of two or more medical conditions in the same individual is not uncommon. If disability-adjusted life year (DALY) calculations are carried out for each condition separately, multimorbidity may lead to an overestimation of the morbidity component, the Years Lived with Disability (YLD). Adjusting for comorbidity may be straightforward if all symptoms have same onset and duration; however, when the comorbid health states occur at different time points, an analytical solution to the comorbidity problem becomes more complex. The aim of this study was to develop an indi

Assessing Uncertainty in an Anatomical Site-Specific Gonorrhea Transmission Model of Men Who Have Sex With Men.

BACKGROUND: Increased gonorrhea detection highlights the need for additional prevention efforts. Gonorrhea may only be acquired when there is contact between infected and uninfected anatomical sites. With 3 sites of infection, this leads to 7 plausible routes of men who have sex with men (MSM) transmission: urethra-to-rectum, rectum-to-urethra, urethra-to-oropharynx, rectum-to-oropharynx, oropharynx-to-urethra, oropharynx-to-rectum, and oropharynx-to-oropharynx. We characterize the uncertainty and potential importance of transmission from each anatomical site using a deterministic compartmenta

Path integrals with higher order actions: Application to realistic chemical systems.

Quantum thermodynamic parameters can be determined using path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. These simulations, however, become computationally demanding as the quantum nature of the system increases, although their efficiency can be improved by using higher order approximations to the thermal density matrix, specifically the action. Here we compare the standard, primitive approximation to the action (PA) and three higher order approximations, the Takahashi-Imada action (TIA), the Suzuki-Chin action (SCA) and the Chin action (CA). The resulting PIMC methods are applied to two realist

Systematic parameter mapping for Wavelet-Based scatter correction in SPECT: clinical perception versus quantitative metrics.

BACKGROUND: Photon scatter significantly degrades Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) image quality, with scattered photons accounting for 30-40% of detected counts within standard energy windows. While conventional scatter correction methods face limitations including noise amplification and computational demands, wavelet transforms offer promising capabilities for sinogram-domain correction. However, comprehensive parameter optimization remains unexplored. METHODS: We evaluated 96 mother wavelets across seven families, implementing three decomposition levels and five threshol

Effect of living in well-insulated warm houses on hypertension and cardiovascular diseases based on a nationwide epidemiological survey in Japan: a modelling and cost-effectiveness analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are more prevalent in colder homes, partly due to cold-induced high blood pressure (BP). While thermal insulation and heating are rational strategies to mitigate cold exposure, the high initial and running costs pose significant barriers. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of living in well-insulated warm houses. METHODS: An economic model was developed based on the indoor temperature-BP and BP-CVDs relationships. Five scenarios were outlined: a base scenario (Scenario 0: the most prevalent thermal insulation level (Grade

Do High-sensitivity Troponin and Natriuretic Peptide Predict Death or Serious Cardiac Outcomes After Syncope?

OBJECTIVES: An estimated 1.2 million annual emergency department (ED) visits for syncope/near syncope occur in the United States. Cardiac biomarkers are frequently obtained during the ED evaluation, but the prognostic value of index high-sensitivity troponin (hscTnT) and natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are unclear. The objective of this study was to determine if hscTnT and NT-proBNP drawn in the ED are independently associated with 30-day death/serious cardiac outcomes in adult patients presenting with syncope. METHODS: A prespecified secondary analysis of a prospective, observational trial e
