A least-squares parameter estimation algorithm for switched hammerstein systems with applications to the VOR.

A "Multimode" or "switched" system is one that switches between various modes of operation. When a switch occurs from one mode to another, a discontinuity may result followed by a smooth evolution under the new regime. Characterizing the switching behavior of these systems is not well understood and, therefore, identification of multimode systems typically requires a preprocessing step to classify the observed data according to a mode of operation. A further consequence of the switched nature of these systems is that data available for parameter estimation of any subsystem may be inadequate. A

Psychosocial interventions for panic disorder after coronary artery bypass graft: a case study.

It is increasingly recognized that patients with cardiovascular disease may also suffer from concurrent psychological problems. Many patients present to emergency services and cardiologists with a history of panic disorder. Because of the similarity of presenting symptoms, these patients are often undiagnosed and consequently have slower recovery times and are costly to the healthcare system. Panic disorder is a significant public health problem; however, it is a treatable condition. Healthcare providers should be aware of its occurrence in cardiovascular disease. This case study describes the

Management of hepatic epithelial malignancy in childhood and adolescence.

This review addresses the management of epithelial liver tumors of childhood and adolescence (hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma), which constitute approximately 90% of primary liver malignancy in this age group. The epidemiology, pathology, clinical presentation, and diagnosis are given in order to appreciate differences in biological behavior of these two neoplasms and the need for a distinct therapeutic approach to each. The multidisciplinary treatment of hepatoblastoma has become increasingly refined and long-term survival can be expected in approximately 80% of patients. Where su

Contribution of family, cognitive and clinical dimensions to long-term outcome in schizophrenia.

A multivariate approach incorporating both biological and psychosocial factors was used in a cross-sectional study of schizophrenic inpatien … sociality Scale. Stepwise discriminant function analysis was performed; family ratings of patients' problem behaviors was the most powerful discriminator between the two groups and a composite measure of neuropsychological functioning ranked second. Other significant discriminators were BPRS scores, availability of social support to the family and age of onset. Fa …

[The effect of environmental tobacco smoke during pregnancy on psychomotor child development].

The association between maternal smoking and retarded maternal condition and birth outcome is well know. Smoking during pregnancy increase risk of preterm delivery, hipotrofia, delayed developmental of respiratory and nervous system. The risk for most of thisconditions has been found to increase with the number of cigarettes smoked. The last examination shows that environmental tobacco smoke during pregnancy leads to physical problems, behavioral problems even mental retardation.

Nocturnal problems occurring in Parkinson's disease.

A large number of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience nocturnal problems that impair their sleep quality. Among them, motor disorders such as tremor, rigidity, akinesia, akathisia, periodic leg movements, painful dystonia, dyskinesias, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder are common. This article reviews the clinical characteristics of some nocturnal motor problems that often induce sleep disruption in PD patients.

Neuropsychologic impact of facial deformities in children. Neurodevelopmental role of the face in communication and bonding.

The face is the primary tool of human communication. In early childhood, the face plays a crucial role in bonding and attachment. Severe craniofacial problems may alter bonding and attachment, thereby resulting in future risk for emotional, behavioral, and social problems. Clinical and research findings, while incomplete, suggest that this is the case. This conceptual understanding of the key role of face-to-face communication in early childhood provides a compelling rationale for early repair of craniofacial deformations.

Cognitive functioning and family risk factors in relation to symptom behaviors of ADHD and ODD in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, the authors investigated whether ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) behaviors share associations with problems in cognitive functioning and/or family risk factors in adolescence. This was done by examining independent as well as specific associations of cognitive functioning and family risk factors with ADHD and ODD behaviors. METHOD: A sample of 120 adolescents from the general population was assessed on various cognitive tasks. ADHD and ODD behaviors were measured through parental and teacher ratings based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Di

Concordance of Parent- and Child-Reported Physical Abuse Following Child Protective Services Investigation.

Knowledge about the concordance of parent- and child-reported child physical abuse is scarce, leaving researchers and practitioners with little guidance on the implications of selecting either informant. Drawing from a 2008-2009 sample of 11- to 17-year-olds ( N = 636) from Wave 1 of the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being, this study first examined parent-child concordance in physical abuse reporting (Parent-Child Conflict Tactic Scale). Second, it applied multivariate regression analysis to relate parent-child agreement in physical abuse to parent-reported (Child Behavi

Sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease: many causes, few therapeutic options.

Sleep symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) are frequent and have multifactorial and multilayered causes. Primary involvement of sleep/wake regulating centers in the brainstem, sleep problems caused by the nocturnal manifestation of motor and dysautonomic signs and medication-induced sleep problems are often impossible to disentangle in the individual patient. Two syndromes, hypersomnia and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), are increasingly recognized as harbingers of the core PD motor syndrome. RBD, associated with a panoply of other nonmotor symptoms, may predispose to a specific PD phenotyp

Rumination and depression in adolescence: investigating symptom specificity in a multiwave prospective study.

A ruminative response style has been shown to predict depressive symptoms among youth and adults, but it is unclear whether rumination is associated specifically with depression compared with co-occurring symptoms of anxiety and externalizing behaviors. This prospective, multiwave study investigated whether baseline rumination predicted prospective elevations in depressive symptoms specifically. Rumination was assessed at baseline in a sample of early and middle adolescents (N = 350, 6-10th graders). Symptom measures of depression, anxious arousal, general internalizing, and conduct/externaliz

Student perspectives on faculty incivility in nursing education: an application of the concept of rankism.

Incivility in nursing education is an emergent problem and one that seriously disrupts the teaching-learning environment and often results in conflicted and stressful student/faculty relationships. Nursing faculty who demonstrate positive, respectful behaviors, encourage similar behaviors from their students. Conversely, faculty who are aloof, disinterested, and demeaning may invoke hostility. The author conducted a phenomenological study to examine nursing students' perceptions of faculty incivility and its impact on the students. Students identified 3 main themes of faculty incivility: (1) f

The impact of high neuroticism in parents on children's psychosocial functioning in a population at high risk for major affective disorder: a family-environmental pathway of intergenerational risk.

Behavioral genetic studies indicate that nongenetic factors play a role in the development of bipolar and major depressive disorders. The trait of neuroticism is common among individuals with major affective disorders. We hypothesized that high neuroticism among parents affects the family environment and parenting practices and thereby increases the risk of psychosocial problems among offspring. This hypothesis is tested in a sample of participants at high and low risk for major affective disorders, which contained parents with bipolar disorder (55), major depression (21), or no mental disorde

Psychiatric and psychological morbidity as a function of adaptive disability in preschool children with aggressive and hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior.

Children with high levels of aggressive-hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior (AHII; n = 154) were subdivided into those with (n = 38) and without (n = 116) adaptive disability (+AD/-AD) defined as a discrepancy between expected versus actual adaptive functioning. They were compared to each other and a control group of 47 normal children. Both AHII groups were more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder than control children; more symptoms of general psychopathology; greater social skills deficits; more parental

Sexual abuse: somatic and emotional reactions.

A chart review and telephone interview of 72 sexual abuse victims was conducted to determine if children and adolescents who are victims of sexual abuse suffer from symptoms similar to the "rape trauma syndrome," which has been reported in adults. Symptoms similar to the rape trauma syndrome were found in 48 of the 72 abused children and only 26 of the matched control group, p less than .01. Common somatic complaints in the sexual abuse patients included dysuria, vaginal discharge and chronic abdominal pain. Some of the emotional and behavioral problems noted during the follow-up period among

Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Children and Adolescents: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Co-Morbid Neuropsychiatric Conditions in a US Nationwide Study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) is a major public health concern, impacting not only smokers but also those around them, particularly children and adolescents. TSE is linked to various neuropsychiatric conditions and significantly impacts quality of life. This study examines the prevalence, socio-demographic factors, and the impact of TSE on the severity of neurological and psychiatric co-morbidities. METHODS: Data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) in the US from 2020 to 2021 were used in this study. We included 91,404 children and adolescents aged between 0 to 17

Structural Validity of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short Form: Application to Brooding and Reflection.

Research on social problem-solving ability or the cognitive-behavioral processes used to find successful solutions to everyday problems has been advanced by the availability of easy-to-administer self-report measures. The goal of the current study is twofold: (a) validate the factor structure of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised: Short Form (SPSI-R:S) and (b) examine the relationship between depressive rumination subtypes and dimensions of social problem solving. An initial confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) in Sample 1 revealed poor model fit. An exploratory factor analysis reveale

The most commonly applied conceptual approach for excessive Internet use has been as a behavioral addiction, similar to pathological or problem gambling. In order to contribute to the understanding of Internet dependence as a disorder resembling problem gambling, the current study aimed to examine the relationship between problem gambling and Internet dependence and the degree to which psychological factors associated with problem gambling are relevant to the study of Internet dependence. The factors of depression, anxiety, student stressors, loneliness, and social support were examined in a s

Differentiation of attention-related problems in childhood absence epilepsy.

The current study examined the specific types of attention-related problems children with childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) experience and the role of disease factors in the development of attention-related problems. Thirty-eight subjects with CAE and 46 healthy controls, aged 6 to 16, participated in the study. The Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC) was completed by parents, and the Attention Problems and Hyperactivity subscales were used to characterize the problems of children with CAE. Item analysis within the subscales revealed that children with CAE demonstrate higher rates of

Effects of psychological birth trauma on obsessive-compulsive behaviors during the postpartum period in terms of infant care: the chain-mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty and dyadic coping.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the common mental health problems among perinatal women, and the postpartum period represents a particularly vulnerable stage for the emergence of clinically significant obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Postpartum infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviors may exacerbate maternal negative emotions such as anxiety and depression through a cognitive-behavioral cycle and impair the development of the mother-infant relationship. Birth trauma is one of the influencing factors of perinatal mental health, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors may
