Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a hallmark of advanced atherosclerosis and a major determinant of procedural complexity during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Once considered a passive consequence of vascular degeneration, CAC is now recognized as an active, highly regulated process driven by inflammation, oxidative stress, extracellular vesicle release, osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and biomechanical remodeling. These mechanisms generate a spectrum of calcific phenotypes, ranging from microcalcifications and sheet calcium to nodular calcium and c

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a major cause of mortality after heart transplantation, characterized by intimal proliferation-induced coronary stenosis. The first year post-transplantation represents a critical period for CAV development, with most intimal proliferation occurring during this timeframe. This study aimed to investigate the temporal changes in lipid content and its relationship with intimal proliferation during the first year after heart transplantation. Serial three-vessel near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (

Background/Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease increasingly recognized for extra-motor manifestations, including cognitive dysfunction involving frontal cortical systems. Conventional clinical assessments are primarily behavioral and may not capture subtle alterations in the neural systems that support cognitive performance. This pilot study examined whether wearable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) could detect task-evoked prefrontal hemodynamic differences during the King-Devick Task (KDT), a rapid oculomotor number-naming t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Diabetic chronic wounds heal slowly due to persistent inflammation, impaired macrophage polarization, and compromised angiogenesis, while conventional therapies fail to effectively modulate the wound microenvironment. This study aimed to develop pagoda-like microneedle (MN) patches incorporating isoliquiritigenin (ISL)-loaded hollow mesoporous copper sulfide nanoparticles (HMCuS@ISL MNs) with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal functionality to achieve local immunometabolic regulation and promote angiogenesis, antibacterial activity, and wound repair.
METHODS: HMCuS@ISL

Continuous metrics of cerebral autoregulation (CA) assessment have been developed using various multimodal cerebral physiological monitoring devices. However, CA regional disparity remains unclear in states of health and disease. Leveraging existing archived data sources, we preliminarily evaluated regional hemispheric disparity in CA using the near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-derived cerebral oximetry index (COx/COx-a). Along with bilateral NIRS, regional cerebral oxygen saturation, arterial blood pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure, and bilateral COx/COx-a were derived using three differe

OBJECTIVES: We present a streamlined approach for aortic arch repair that does not require hypothermic circulatory arrest or axillary/femoral cutdown.
METHODS: The procedure setup comprised standard right radial/femoral arterial lines, near-infrared spectroscopy, sternotomy, and cardiopulmonary bypass with arch central cannulation. Under normothermia, antegrade cerebral perfusion (ACP) was administered through the innominate artery via punctured aortic root needle cannula (closed ACP) or balloon catheter (open ACP). Aortic arch clamping followed, with bilateral ACP employed in selected cases.

This study investigated the neuromodulatory effects of Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) on resting-state functional connectivity (FC) following psychosocial stress induced by the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Given its key role in cognitive control and emotion regulation - processes highly relevant for rumination - we focused on the frontoparietal network. Across two studies, intermittent (iTBS) and continuous (cTBS) protocols were applied to the left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC; study 1) and right Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex (VLPFC; study 2) prior to stress induction. Freezing of gait (FoG) is a disabling motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) characterized by brief episodes of inability to step, often triggered by cognitive-motor conflict. Step initiation (SI) involves anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs), which are critical for balance and movement preparation. This study aimed to investigate the neural and biomechanical correlates of FoG during SI under congruent and incongruent conditions, focusing on the supplementary motor area (SMA) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), regions associated with motor preparation and inhibitory control. Background: In patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (summarized as pulmonary vascular disease; PVD), it is unclear whether the brain is protected against acute hypoxia and whether acute pulmonary vascular dilatation by sildenafil would influence cerebral and muscle tissue oxygenation whilst breathing normoxia or hypoxia. Methods: Adult patients with PVD underwent right heart catheterization, while cerebral and muscular tissue oxygenation and tissue hemoglobin index were measured using near-infrared spectroscopy along with arterial and m

BACKGROUND: The formation of the family is interrupted following a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission, and fathers report experiencing delayed infant bonding due to unit barriers and separation. Fathers state comfort with early infant bonding through language, fearing physical contact with the sick newborn. During hospitalization, active engagement supports ongoing infant/parent vocalization and infant stabilization.
PURPOSE: This prospective descriptive pilot study explored the infant's physiological response to the father's voice during a live reading activity.
METHODS: After In

Coronary artery blockage, the most common cardiovascular problem, is often treated with drug-eluting stents (DES). This study aims to address the main limitation of traditional angioplasty therapy. Thus, designing, fabricating, and analyzing a novel drug-eluting polymeric stent using liquid crystal display (LCD) technology may potentially represent an innovative approach to DES in the near future. Therefore, a poly (lactic acid) (PLA) based 3D-printed stent was designed using SolidWorks software and fabricated using the liquid crystal display (LCD) method. The cyclosporine-loaded stent was pre

Background Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) are important determinants of postoperative quality of life. Evidence on early cognitive outcomes after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in neurologically intact, asymptomatic patients remains limited, and reported incidences vary widely. Methodology This single-center prospective observational pilot study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06391866) enrolled 18 statin-treated adults (mean age 78.3 ± 4.9 years) with asymptomatic ≥70% ICA stenosis undergoing CEA under balanced general anesthesia with bilateral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and entrop

BACKGROUND: Gait automaticity, the ability of the brain to control locomotion with minimal use of executive-attentional resources, is altered in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, we showed that step-synchronized tactile cueing improved gait regularity and freezing of gait in PD; however, it is not known if this cueing mode also improves gait automaticity. Thus, this study investigates the effects of step-synchronized tactile cueing (versus fixed cueing) on gait automaticity in the laboratory and during daily life.
METHODS: This is a pilot, randomized, double-blinded study where
