[APPLICATION OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED SURGICAL PLANNING IN SURGICAL TREATMENT OF ANKLE FRACTURES].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical value of computer-assisted surgical planning in the treatment of ankle fractures. METHODS: Between January 2012 and January 2014, open reduction and internal fixation were performed on 42 patients with ankle fractures. There were 22 males and 20 females with an average age of 52 years (range, 19-72 years). The causes were spraining injury (20 cases), traffic accident injury (14 cases), and falling from height injury (8 cases). The time from injury to operation was 5 hours to 12 days (mean, 2.5 days). All fractures were closed trimalleolar fractures. Accordin

The association of injury with substance use disorder among women of reproductive age: an opportunity to address a major contributor to recurrent preventable emergency department visits?

OBJECTIVES: Substance use disorder (SUD) among women of reproductive age is a complex public health problem affecting a diverse spectrum of women and their families, with potential consequences across generations. The goals of this study were 1) to describe and compare the prevalence of patterns of injury requiring emergency department (ED) visits among SUD-positive and SUD-negative women and 2) among SUD-positive women, to investigate the association of specific categories of injury with type of substance used. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a large, multisource health care

Functional outcome following a locked fracture-dislocation of the calcaneus.

PURPOSE: Locked fracture-dislocations of the calcaneus are uncommon, and a substantial number of these injuries is not recognised or is misdiagnosed at first presentation. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome in patients with this injury. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of adult patients who sustained a uni- or bilateral calcaneal fracturedislocation. Outcome was measured using validated questionnaires, including the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Hindfoot score (AOFAS), Foot Function Index (FFI) and a visual analogue scale (VAS). Leading causes of unintentional and intentional injury mortality: United States, 2000-2009.

OBJECTIVES: We have described national trends for the 5 leading external causes of injury mortality. METHODS: We used negative binomial regression and annual underlying cause-of-death data for US residents for 2000 through 2009. RESULTS: Mortality rates for unintentional poisoning, unintentional falls, and suicide increased by 128%, 71%, and 15%, respectively. The unintentional motor vehicle traffic crash mortality rate declined 25%. Suicide ranked first as a cause of injury mortality, followed by motor vehicle traffic crashes, poisoning, falls, and homicide. Females had a lower injury morta

Presence of accompanying head injury in patients with maxillofacial trauma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with maxillofacial fractures are at high risk of accompanying traumatic cranial injuries. Prompt determination of head injury in these patients is crucial for improving patient survival and recovery. METHODS: The records of 246 patients with maxillofacial fractures referred to the emergency department of our hospital between January 2006 and September 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. The patients' age and gender, cause, type and location of the maxillofacial fracture, and the cranial injuries were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 23.61±1

[Adult spinal cord injury with no radiographic bone lesion: analysis of nine consecutive patients].

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury with no radiographic bone lesion described as spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality (SCIWORA) in childhood is less often reported in adults than in children. This study was undertaken to report our experience in the management of nine cases over 25 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study from 1985 to 2009 concerning nine adult patients who sustained spinal cord injury with no radiographic abnormality. The ratio among all cervical spine traumas for the same period was 2.21%. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in all t

Epidemiology of maternal injuries during pregnancy in a population-based study, 1997-2005.

BACKGROUND: Maternal injuries during pregnancy are common and can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to describe factors related to injury during pregnancy. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS), a population-based, case-control study of birth defects in 10 U.S. states. We estimated the proportion of control mothers, a random sample of mothers delivering infants without major birth defects in the study regions, who reported an injury during pregnancy. We assessed associations with maternal and paternal characteristics using logistic regres

The epidemiology of surgically treated acute subdural and epidural hematomas in patients with head injuries: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this paper is to review the population-based epidemiology of surgically treated post-traumatic epidural hematomas (EDHs) and/or subdural hematomas (SDHs) among patients who presented to the single neurosurgical centre in Nova Scotia. METHODS: We included all patients aged 16 years or older who presented to the tertiary care hospital with acute post-traumatic EDHs and/or SDHs between May 23, 1996, and May 22, 2005, and who were surgically treated. We generated an initial cohort from the provincial trauma registry and reviewed a total of 152 charts for possible inclus

[A serious late complication of non-operative management of splenic trauma: rupture of splenic artery aneurysm].

Over the last five past years, three patients required urgent operation in our institution for hemorrhagic shock after rupture of a post-traumatic splenic artery aneurysm. Those patients had undergone non- operative management (NOM) of grade III, IV (AAST classification) splenic injury 9, 13, and 22 months earlier. Two of them had a CT scan 30 days after initial trauma with no evidence of a developing splenic artery aneurysm. All three patients survived after proximal ligature of splenic artery and hemostatic splenectomy. Our experience with these three cases suggests that a delayed follow-up

Community childhood injury surveillance: an emergency department-based model.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of an emergency department (ED)-based injury surveillance model to determine the incidence and mechanisms of nonfatal injuries among children living in Cabrini Green, a poor urban community. METHODS: Using ED records and census data, population-based injury rates were determined for a retrospective cohort of children, 0 to 14 years old, (N = 3908) with nonfatal injuries resulting in ED treatment between January 1994 and December 1998. RESULTS: There were 1950 nonfatal injuries during the 5-year study period (annual injury incidence of 998/10,000). Age-specific

[Spinal cord injuries in infants and juveniles].

Trauma of the infant or juvenile spine is a very rare occurrence (less than 2%). Nevertheless, it is almost always dramatic. In 21 years 1630 patients with spinal cord injuries were treated. Of these, 21.7% (357 patients) had injuries in the area of the cervical spine. 23 patients (1.4%) were younger than 17.5 years, 8 of them were younger than 10 years. In 10 cases the cause was a traffic accident, in 7 cases it was a jump in too shallow water. In 4 times other leisure activities were the cause. A fall from a window sill and a falling tree were further reasons. Neck segment C0 to C3 was invol

[Subtalar dislocations. Apropos of 35 cases].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The subtalar dislocation is a rare injury. The authors appreciate the difference of frequency between medial and lateral displacement, the factors likely to increase a classical favorable prognosis and the therapeutic attitude to suggest. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 35 observations were included of which two bilateral, 26 had a medial displacement, 9 a lateral displacement. Treatment was conservative in 21 cases and surgical in 14 cases. The results were analysed using Gay and Evrard's clinical scoring system at which we added radiological results. RESULTS: The average follow

Evaluation of the effect of delayed management of traumatized permanent teeth.

This investigation studied the complication that could arise from delayed management of traumatized permanent teeth. Patients reported to the primary care clinic at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, seeking treatment of traumatized anterior teeth were evaluated. Esthetic consideration (64 patients) and pain, swelling, or discomforts (50 patients) were the main reasons the patients came to the clinic. Clinical and radiographic examinations, as well as history of the trauma, were recorded. It was found that most of the patients had a treatment delay exceeding 1 month. Initial pulp

Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the intracavernous ICA presenting with massive epistaxis: imaging diagnosis and endovascular treatment.

Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the intracavernous internal carotid artery (ICA) is a very rare cause of epistaxis but is a life-threatening clinical situation when left untreated. The authors have experienced four cases of traumatic pseudoaneurysm involving the intracavernous ICA. Delayed massive epistaxes developed 1 to 8 months after trauma and initial transient epistaxis in all four patients. Three of the cases were successfully managed by the detachable balloon occlusion (DBO) of the ICA along with the aneurysm openings. In one case, a large pseudoaneurysm destroying a large area of the centr

Sauvé-Kapandji and reverse Sauvé-Kapandji procedures for treating chronic longitudinal radioulnar dissociation with capitellum fracture.

Almost all reported cases of longitudinal radioulnar dissociation have involved fracture of the radial head, rupture of the interosseous membrane, and disruption of the distal radioulnar joint, although unusual patterns of Essex-Lopresti injury have also been described. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a chronic Essex-Lopresti variant including fracture of the capitellum. A displaced capitellum fracture must alert to the possibility of longitudinal radioulnar dissociation, even without concomitant radial head fracture or symptoms at the forearm and ulnar wrist. Successful mid-term

Elevator-Related Deaths.

Elevators are mechanical transportation devices used to move vertically between different levels of a building. When first developed, elevators lacked the safety features. When safety mechanisms were developed, elevators became a common feature of multistory buildings. Despite their well-regarded safety record, elevators are not without the potential for danger of injury or death. Persons at-risk for elevator-related death include maintenance and construction workers, other employees, and those who are prone to risky behavior. Deaths may be related to asphyxia, blunt force, avulsion injuries,

A ten-year analysis of the traumatic maxillofacial and brain injury patient in Amsterdam: incidence and aetiology.

In the literature it is questioned if the presence of maxillofacial trauma is associated with the presence of brain injury. The aim of this study is to present a 10-year retrospective study of the incidence and aetiology of maxillofacial trauma associated with brain injury that required both oral and maxillofacial and neurosurgical intervention during the same hospital stay. Forty-seven patients from a population of 579 trauma patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery were identified. The main cause of injury was road traffic collision, followed by falls. Interpersonal violence correlated less

Aetiology and incidence of maxillofacial trauma in Amsterdam: a retrospective analysis of 579 patients.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of maxillofacial fractures varies widely between different countries. The large variability in reported incidence and aetiology is due to a variety of contributing factors, including environmental, cultural and socioeconomic factors. This retrospective report presents a study investigating the aetiology and incidence of patients with maxillofacial fractures in Amsterdam over a period of 10 years. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 408 males and 171 females with a mean age of 35.9 (SD: ±16.3) years. The age group 20-29 years accounted for the largest subgrou
