[Relationship between c-erbB-2 oncoprotein expression and prognosis in salivary gland malignant pleomorphic adenoma].

A monoclonal antibody AB-3 has been used immunohistochemically in a retrospective study of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues of the salivary gland malignant pleomorphic adenomas (MPA). Positive staining was found in 25/60 (41.67%) of MPA. c-erbB-2 oncoprotein expression of the postoperative recurrent MPA group was higher than that of non-recurrent MPA group (P < 0.05). The postoperative 5-year survival rate of MPA with c-erbB-2 expression was considerably lower than that of without expression (P < 0.01). This observation indicates that c-erbB-2 oncoprotein expression may be an useful pr

Salivary duct carcinoma: clinicopathological and immunohistochemical studies.

Nine cases of salivary duct carcinoma were reviewed clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically, with special evaluation of biomarkers with prognostic significance (p53, Ki67, c-erbB-2 and DNA content). Eight tumours occurred in the parotid gland and one in the submandibular gland. The average age of the patients (8 males and 1 female) was 62.8 years (range = 47-74 years). Tumour size ranged from 1 to 6 cm (mean = 3.46 cm). Recurrences were found in 33.3% (3 patients), regional metastases in 44.4% (4 patients) and systemic metastases in 33.3% (3 patients). Three patients died of their

Carcinoma of major salivary glands.

Ninety-four patients with carcinoma of the major salivary glands seen at Indiana University Hospitals from 1960-1977 were studied. Eighty-four patients completed their planned course of therapy, and 49 of 84 patients remain alive with no evidence of disease 2-17 years following treatment. Comparison has been made for three modalities: surgery alone, radiation therapy alone, and a combined approach. Surgery alone was used for treatment of early lesions, and 22 of 38 patients (58%) remain free of disease. Radiation therapy alone was used for advanced cases and palliation, and 6 of 16 patients (3

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of mammary analog secretory carcinoma masquerading as low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma: case report with a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The primary role of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of salivary gland masses is to determine the underlying process and guide further management. The objective of our study is to provide a comprehensive review of cytologic features and ancillary studies of mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC), discuss differential diagnosis and review recent advances in the understanding of its biologic behavior. CASE: A 23-year-old female underwent ultrasound-guided FNA of a slowly enlarging parotid mass. Smears displayed branching clusters of bland vacuolated polygonal cells in a

Salivary duct carcinoma. Part II. Immunohistochemical evaluation of 13 cases for estrogen and progesterone receptors, cathepsin D, and c-erbB-2 protein.

Salivary duct carcinoma is an infrequent highly aggressive salivary gland tumor that is histologically similar to ductal carcinoma of the breast. We studied 13 cases by immunohistochemistry for the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors, cathepsin D, and c-erbB-2 protein to determine whether the similarity to breast carcinoma extended beyond the light microscope to the molecular level and, if so, whether these markers might have therapeutic or prognostic value. Twelve of 13 cases contained sufficient amounts of tumor tissue for evaluation. Of these 12 cases, one (8%) was positive for

Controversies in the management of metastatic melanoma to regional lymphatic basins.

The primary management of lymph nodes involved with metastatic melanoma is regional lymphadenectomy. Many controversies of regional lymph node dissection exist including extent and nature of the lymphadenectomy, treatment of lymphatic metastases in unusual locations and the role of adjuvant radiotherapy. Although radical neck dissection has been the gold standard for cervical disease, modified dissections do not seem to compromise regional control in appropriately selected patients. In the axilla, a Level I, II, and III dissection is most commonly performed. Combined superficial and deep groin

Triglyceride-Glucose Index in Parotid Gland Tumours: A Novel Biomarker for Differentiating Warthin Tumour and Pleomorphic Adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour are the two most common benign parotid gland tumours with distinct histological and clinical profiles. Recent studies suggest a potential link between metabolic disturbances-particularly insulin resistance-and the development of Warthin tumours. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has emerged as a simple, cost-effective biomarker of insulin resistance. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of the TyG index in differentiating between pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumour. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was cond

MRI Signatures of Parotid Tumours Impacting Management Decisions: A Retrospective Study With Radiology and Pathology Correlation.

INTRODUCTION: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) from parotid tumour is inadequate and nondiagnostic in 8% and FNA/biopsy from deep lobe is technically challenging; hence, our first objective was to evaluate MRI findings which best predict the benign and malignant nature of parotid tumour. Our second objective was to develop MRI signatures for parotid tumour histopathologies including grades of carcinoma, to help in decision making regarding elective neck dissection. METHODS: Two head and neck radiologists retrospectively evaluated and developed signatures of common benign and malignant parotid tum
