The welfare status of cull cows going through livestock markets was assessed in 12 premises in Chile, using behavioral and health indicators observed during unloading, auction, and loading (once in winter and once in summer). Groups of cows were observed by the same observer and the following indicators were recorded at each stage: slips, falls, balks, turns, jumps, and vocalizations of cows were considered as behavioral events and a proportion was calculated based on the number of observed events per group divided by the number of cows per group to give a behavioral event index (BEI). BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, consuming alcohol and using illicit drugs can have serious health implications for both mother and child. Behavioral change interventions, especially those underpinned by theoretical constructs, can be effective in reducing harmful substance use among pregnant women.
PURPOSE: To understand what type of behavior change mechanisms could be useful in reducing alcohol consumption or achieving abstinence from illicit drug use during pregnancy, this review aimed to identify behavior change techniques (BCTs), the smallest, active components of interventions that may be

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial personality is a common adult problem that imposes a major public health burden, but for which there is no effective treatment. Affected individuals exhibit persistent antisocial behavior and pervasive antisocial character traits, such as irritability, manipulativeness, and lack of remorse. Prevention of antisocial personality in childhood has been advocated, but evidence for effective interventions is lacking.
METHOD: The authors conducted two follow-up studies of randomized trials of group parent training. One involved 120 clinic-referred 3- to 7-year-olds with severe

The study provides an overview of current cognitive-behavioral interventions to treat school-refusal in children and adolescents. First of all we define the problem area and describe the standard of knowledge about prevalence, course and risk factors. The main focus of our work is presented by psychotherapeutic treatments of school phobia and school anxiety. Apart from general treatment principles we give a survey of the most important behavioral therapeutic as well as cognitive-behavioral therapeutic treatments. In addition, we provide a detailed description of current research about efficacy

In primary health care, elderly patients having problems in their ability to deal with information are increasingly encountered as a result of lessened institutional care and altered population structure. The most common causes of cognitive problems in the elderly include delusional disorder, various progressive memory diseases and delirium. Treatment of cognitive problems is multidisciplinary collaboration, and maintaining the functional capacity is important at all stages of the disease. Memory disorder medications clearly increase the time of functional capacity, provided that their use is

BACKGROUND: Infancy regulatory problems (RP) of sleep, feeding and eating, and excessive crying are thought to play a key role in the development of psychopathology in childhood, but knowledge of the early trajectories is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To explore RP at ages 8-11 months and the associations with mental health problems at 1½ years, and assess the influences of maternal mental health problems and relationship problems.
METHODS: RP was explored in a nested in-cohort sample (N = 416) drawn from a community-based cohort (N = 2,973). Cohort children were examined by community health nurses, u

Pathogenic heterozygous loss of function variants in CTNNB1 are associated with CTNNB1 neurodevelopmental disorder. We report the clinical phenotype of individuals with CTNNB1 neurodevelopmental disorder using both caregiver-reported data (medical history, adaptive function, quality of life, and behavior issues) and in-person clinical assessments (neurological, motor, and cognitive function) in 32 individuals with likely pathogenic or pathogenic CTNNB1 variants. Most individuals had truncal hypotonia, muscle weakness, hypertonia, dystonia, microcephaly, and many had a history of tethered cord.

Childhood is a sensitive period where behavioral disturbances, determined by genetics and environmental factors including sport activity, may emerge and impact risk of mental illness in adulthood. We aimed to determine if participation in sports can mitigate genetic risk for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in youth. We analyzed 4975 unrelated European youth (ages 9-10) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Our outcomes were eight Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scores, measured annually. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) were calculated for 21 disorders, and sport freq

Although childhood-onset psychiatric disorders are often considered as distinct and separate from each other, they frequently co-occur, with partial overlapping symptomatology. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occur with each other and with other mental disorders, particularly disruptive behavior disorders, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD). Whether these associated comorbidities represent a spectrum of distinct clinical phenotypes is matter of research. The aim of our study was to describe the clinical phenoty

Binge eating and binge drinking are two of the most common health-risk behaviors among young people showing to frequently co-occur in nonclinical samples of adolescent boys and girls. The present study examined the role of different dimensions of family functioning in binge behaviors among adolescents. One thousand and twenty young to late adolescents (507 girls and 517 boys) with ages ranging from 16 to 22 years participated in the study and completed a survey of self-report measures. Our findings showed that adolescents who binge eat and drink and adolescents who only binge eat perceived a l

Problem gambling and gambling disorder (GD) are associated with a range of mental health concerns that extend beyond gambling behaviors alone. Prior works have consistently linked gambling disorder with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), both cross-sectionally and over time. However, very little work has examined the specific relationships between these 2 disorders. The present work postulated that symptoms of PTSD are likely associated with unique beliefs about gambling behaviors and unique motivations to gamble. Using 2 samples-an inpatient sample of U.S. Armed Forces veterans

Children who live in the context of maternal incarceration (MI) are exposed to both general environmental risk and incarceration-specific risk increasing the probability of their developing externalizing and internalizing behaviors problems. Little research has examined the socio-emotional mechanisms that account for the psychological effects of MI. This research examined children's anger and sadness regulation as mediators between environmental and incarceration-specific risk and psychological functioning. Participants were 117 children (60% Black; 52% boys; M age = 9.85 years, SD = 1.65 year

Objective: Toilet refusal syndrome (TRS) is a common disorder in toddlers, defined by use of diapers and refusal of toilet for defecation, while toilet phobia (TP) is a rare disorder in which toilets are avoided completely. Both disorders have not been described systematically in children, yet. Therefore, the aim was to present typical case vignettes illustrating different clinical presentations of TP and TRS. Methods: 5 typical cases were selected from all patients presented at a specialized outpatient clinic for incontinence at a tertiary university hospital during the last 3 years. Results:

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychotropic medications are commonly prescribed to people with intellectual disability. We reviewed current evidence-based pharmacotherapy options and recent updates to guide clinicians in their medication management plans.
RECENT FINDINGS: Antipsychotics, particularly risperidone, appear to be effective in reducing problem behaviors in children with intellectual disability. Evidence in adults is inconclusive. Methylphenidate appears to be effective, and α-agonists appear promising in reducing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms. Lithium might be effective in…

Trends of suicide vary widely according to time, region, age group, sex, and race. Despite mixed trends of increases or decreases in suicide rates around the world, suicide remains an important public-health problem. In an effort to understand and prevent suicide, researchers have investigated medical, psychosocial, cultural, and socio-economic risk factors associated with the environment as a promising line of research. There is now considerable evidence that childhood and family adversities in general such as childhood sexual and physical abuse, witnessing domestic violence, parental separat
