High-frequency magnetic paired associated stimulation promotes motor function recovery in ischemic stroke patients: a study protocol for single-center, sham stimulation randomized controlled trials (H2MPAS).

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have validated the clinical effectiveness of electromagnetic pairing-associated stimulation. Building upon this foundation, we have developed a novel approach involving high-frequency magnetic paired-associated stimulation, aiming to enhance clinical applicability and potentially improve efficacy. However, the clinical effectiveness of this approach remains unclear. Our objective is to demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy of this novel approach by employing high-frequency pairing to intervene in patients experiencing motor dysfunction following a stroke. METHODS:

Defecation after magnesium supplementation enhances cognitive performance in triathletes.

Constipation is correlated with diminished cognitive function, revealing a possible rectum-brain connection. In this counter-balanced crossover trial, 13 elite triathletes underwent a Stroop test to assess cognitive function and executive control. The Stroop test was conducted both with and without magnesium oxide intake, with a 1-week washout period between sessions. Oxygenation and blood distribution during the cognitive challenge were measured using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). Measurements were taken in both the prefrontal brain and the sub-navel region, where the highest glucose upt

Repetitive Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation to Improve Working Memory: An EEG-fNIRS Study.

Transcranial electrical stimulation has demonstrated the potential to enhance cognitive functions such as working memory, learning capacity, and attentional allocation. Recently, it was shown that periodic stimulation within a specific duration could augment the human brain's neuroplasticity. This study investigates the effects of repetitive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS; 1 mA, 5 Hz, 2 min duration) on cognitive function, functional connectivity, and topographic changes using both electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Fifteen healt

Shared and distinct prefrontal cortex alterations of implicit emotion regulation in depression and anxiety: An fNIRS investigation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation deficits, particularly in cognitive reappraisal, are crucial in depression and anxiety. However, research on the neural mechanisms of implicit emotion regulation is lacking, and it remains unclear whether these mechanisms are shared or distinct between the two disorders. METHODS: We investigated the neural mechanisms of implicit cognitive reappraisal in 28 individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), 25 with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and 30 healthy controls (HC) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Participants completed an implici

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation enhanced emotional inhibitory control via increasing intrinsic prefrontal couplings.

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory control represents a core executive function that critically facilitates adaptive behavior and survival in an ever-changing environment. Non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been hypothesized to improve behavioral inhibition performance, however the neurocomputational mechanism of taVNS-induced neuroenhancement remains elusive. METHOD: In the current study, we investigated the efficacy of taVNS in a sham-controlled between-subject functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) experiment with an emotional face Go/No-Go paradigm in nin

Phytic acid inhibits Cr(VI) reduction on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals: Changing reduction sites and electron transfer pathways.

The presence of organic phosphorus may influence the characteristics of Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals under anoxic conditions, as the organic phosphorus tends to bind strongly to clay minerals in soil. Herein, reduced nontronite (rNAu-2) was used to reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of phytic acid (IHP) at neutral pH. With IHP concentration from 0 to 500 μM, Cr(VI) reduction decreased obviously (17.8%) within first 5 min, and then preferred to stagnate during 4-12 h (≥50 μM). After that, Cr(VI) was reduced continuously at a slightly faster rate. Density

Brain language networks and cognitive outcomes in children with frontotemporal lobe epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric frontal and temporal lobe epilepsies (FLE, TLE) have been associated with language impairments and structural and functional brain alterations. However, there is no clear consensus regarding the specific patterns of cerebral reorganization of language networks in these patients. The current study aims at characterizing the cerebral language networks in children with FLE or TLE, and the association between brain network characteristics and cognitive abilities. METHODS: Twenty (20) children with FLE or TLE aged between 6 and 18 years and 29 age- and sex-matched healthy c

The Effects of Different Brain Regions on fNIRS-based Task-state Detection in Speech Imagery.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) based on speech imagery can decode users' verbal intent and help people with motor disabilities communicate naturally. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a commonly used brain signal acquisition method. Asynchronous BCI can response to control commands at any time, which provides great convenience for users. Task state detection, defined as identifying whether user starts or continues covertly articulating, plays an important role in speech imagery BCIs. To better distinguish task state from idle state during speech imagery, this work used fNIRS sig

The impact of music making on neural efficiency & dual-task walking performance in healthy older adults.

Music making is linked to improved cognition and related neuroanatomical changes in children and adults; however, this has been relatively under-studied in aging. The purpose of this study was to assess neural, cognitive, and physical correlates of music making in aging using a dual-task walking (DTW) paradigm. Study participants (N = 415) were healthy adults aged 65 years or older, including musicians (n = 70) who were identified by current weekly engagement in musical activity. A DTW paradigm consisting of single- and dual-task conditions, as well as portable neuroimaging (functional near-in

fNIRS-based graph frequency analysis to identify mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is essential for its treatment and the prevention of dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD). Existing approaches are mostly based on neuropsychological assessments, while brain activation and connection have not been well considered. NEW METHOD: This paper presents a neuroimaging-based graph frequency analysis method and the generated features to quantify the brain functional neurodegeneration and distinguish between PD-MCI patients and healthy controls. The Stroop color-word experiment was conducted with 20 PD-MCI patients and

Decision-making and frontoparietal resting-state functional connectivity among impulsive-compulsive diagnoses. Insights from a Bayesian approach.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most widely used paradigms for assessing decision-making. An impairment in this process may be linked to several psychopathological disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance abuse disorder (SUD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which could make it a good candidate for being consider a transdiagnostic domain. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) has been proposed as a promising biomarker of decision-making. In this study, we aimed to identify idiosyncratic decision-making profiles among healthy people

Effects of phenylephrine on systemic and cerebral circulations in humans: a systematic review with mechanistic explanations.

We conducted a systematic review of the literature reporting phenylephrine-induced changes in blood pressure, cardiac output, cerebral blood flow and cerebral tissue oxygen saturation as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy in humans. We used the proportion change of the group mean values reported by the original studies in our analysis. Phenylephrine elevates blood pressure whilst concurrently inducing a reduction in cardiac output. Furthermore, despite increasing cerebral blood flow, it decreases cerebral tissue oxygen saturation. The extent of phenylephrine's influence on cardiac output (

From Ancient Blue Pigment to Unconventional NIR Phosphor: A Thermal-Stable Near-Infrared I/II Broadband Emission from Ca1-xSrxCuSi4O10 Solid Solution.

Phosphors used in NIR spectroscopy require broadband emission, high external quantum yield, good ability, as well as a tunable spectral range to meet the detection criteria. Two-dimensional copper silicates MCuSi4O10 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) play an important part in ancient art and technology as synthetic blue pigments. In the recent years, these compounds were reported to show a broad near-infrared emission when excited in the visible region. Inspired by the tunable structure of MCuSi4O10, a series of broadband phosphors Ca1-xSrxCuSi4O10 were designed for realizing continuously tunable NIR emission

Renal oximetry for early acute kidney injury detection in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy receiving therapeutic hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) receiving therapeutic hypothermia are at high risk of acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: We performed a two-site prospective observational study from 2018 to 2019 to evaluate the utility of renal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in detecting AKI in 38 neonates with HIE receiving therapeutic hypothermia. AKI was defined by a delayed rate of serum creatinine decline (< 33% on day 3 of life, < 40% on day 5, and < 46% on day 7). Renal saturation (Rsat) and systemic oxygen saturation (SpO2) were continuously measured for the first 9

Bio-inspired self-assembled bacteriochlorin nanoparticles for superior visualization and photothermal ablation of tumors.

BACKGROUND: Although hyperthermia-based photothermal therapy (PTT) has achieved great success in the battle against malignant tumors, various commonly used photothermal sensitizers still suffer from non-selective tumor accumulation, limited photothermal conversion efficiency, potential toxicity and side effects, as well as complex and low cost-effective preparation process. Therefore, novel photothermal sensitizers are urgently required. The well-organized self-assembling of natural bacteriochlorophylls with superior photothermal property may provide an interesting option for the engineering o

Associations between gait performance and pain intensity, psychosocial factors, executive functions as well as prefrontal cortex activity in chronic low back pain patients: A cross-sectional fNIRS study.

INTRODUCTION: Activities of daily living, such as walking, are impaired in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients compared to healthy individuals. Thereby, pain intensity, psychosocial factors, cognitive functioning and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during walking might be related to gait performance during single and dual task walking (STW, DTW). However, to the best of our knowledge, these associations have not yet been explored in a large sample of CLBP patients. METHOD: Gait kinematics (inertial measurement units) and PFC activity (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) during STW and D
