Physics-informed deep learning for infectious disease forecasting.

Accurate forecasting of contagious illnesses has become increasingly important to public health policymaking and better prediction could prevent the loss of millions of lives. To better prepare for future pandemics, it is essential to improve forecasting methods and capabilities. In this work, we implement physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), a popular tool in the area of scientific machine learning, to perform infectious disease forecasting. The used PINNs model incorporates dynamical systems representations of disease transmission into the loss function, thereby assimilating epidemiolog

Accelerated Missense Mutation Identification in Intrinsically Disordered Proteins Using Deep Learning.

We use a combination of Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation results and deep learning (DL) strategies for the rapid identification of large structural changes caused by missense mutations in intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). We used ∼6500 IDP sequences from MobiDB database of length 20-300 to obtain gyration radii from BD simulation on a coarse-grained single-bead amino acid model (HPS2 model) used by us and others [Dignon, G. Non-Contact Fall Detection System Using 4D Imaging Radar for Elderly Safety Based on a CNN Model.

Progressive global aging has increased the number of elderly individuals living alone. The consequent rise in fall accidents has worsened physical injuries, reduced the quality of life, and increased medical expenses. Existing wearable fall-detection devices may cause discomfort, and camera-based systems raise privacy concerns. Here, we propose a non-contact fall-detection system that integrates 4D imaging radar sensors with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect falls through real-time monitoring and visualization using a web-based dashboard and Unity engine-based avatar, along wit

An artificial neural network model reveals water level changes alter bioavailable PCB concentrations in the Detroit River.

Temporal trends of bioavailable PCB water concentrations from a long running mussel biomonitoring program (1998-2023) in the Detroit River, Ontario, Canada. Bioavailable sum PCB10 concentrations exhibited long term declines at two biomonitoring locations but such declines were influenced by changes in water levels and showed different responses among individual congeners. Temporal declines in PCBs were highest rising water levels, PCBs reverted to an increasing trend for all congeners at the upstream biomonitoring location. At the midstream location, only PCBs 28 + 31 and 52 changed their temp

Forecasting the concentration of the components of the particulate matter in Poland using neural networks.

Air pollution is a significant global challenge with profound impacts on human health and the environment. Elevated concentrations of various air pollutants contribute to numerous premature deaths each year. In Europe, and particularly in Poland, air quality remains a critical concern due to pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), which pose serious risks to public health and ecological systems. Effective control of PM emissions and accurate forecasting of their concentrations are essential for improving air quality and supporting public health interventions. This paper presents four advan

An examination of daily CO2 emissions prediction through a comparative analysis of machine learning, deep learning, and statistical models.

Human-induced global warming, primarily attributed to the rise in atmospheric CO2, poses a substantial risk to the survival of humanity. While most research focuses on predicting annual CO2 emissions, which are crucial for setting long-term emission mitigation targets, the precise prediction of daily CO2 emissions is equally vital for setting short-term targets. This study examines the performance of 14 models in predicting daily CO2 emissions data from 1/1/2022 to 30/9/2023 across the top four polluting regions (China, India, the USA, and the EU27&UK). The 14 models used in the study include

Thermodynamic analysis and intelligent modeling of statin drugs solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide.

Evaluating the solubility of various drugs in supercritical CO2 is a fundamental step in developing a supercritical process for formulating new pharmaceuticals. Atorvastatin, Lovastatin, and Simvastatin are statin drugs with limited solubility and low bioavailability. Their solubility in supercritical CO2 has already been experimentally measured. This study provides a thorough theoretical analysis of this topic using novel advanced empirical models, fugacity coefficient-based and liquid thermodynamic models, and various machine learning techniques. Finally, the accuracy of the employed models

Reforming disease prognosis and treatment prediction for palliative care with hybrid metaheuristic deep neural architectures in IoT healthcare ecosystems.

The increasing integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) in healthcare has led to massive, high-dimensional data streams, demanding advanced, adaptive learning models for timely and accurate clinical predictions, especially in sensitive domains such as palliative care. Existing models often suffer from high computational overhead, sensitivity to learning rate variations, and difficulties in handling non-stationary data, which impedes their ability to deliver accurate and prompt predictions in high-risk medical scenarios. To address these limitations, this study proposes a Hybrid Metaheuristi

Deep Learning-Assisted SERS for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Clozapine in Serum on Plasmonic Metasurfaces.

Clozapine is widely regarded as one of the most effective therapeutics for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Despite its proven efficacy, the therapeutic use of clozapine is complicated by its narrow therapeutic index, which necessitates rapid and precise therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to optimize patient outcomes and minimize adverse effects. However, conventional techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography, are limited by their high costs, complex instrumentation, and long turnaround times. Herein, we propose a novel approach that integrates artificial neural networks (ANN

Efficient Multi-Positioned Training for Regression-Based Myoelectric Control: Exploring Transformer Models with Transfer Learning.

State-of-the-art upper-limb myoelectric prostheses are typically controlled using classification-based models that do not offer simultaneous control of wrist and hand movements (degrees of freedom or DOFs). Regression-based alternatives are being studied because they do offer simultaneous DOF control, yielding more natural movements, but generally require longer training routines. We investigated methods to reduce the training burden for regression-based myoelectric control. Five different methods to train regression models were tested using electromyographic (EMG) data collected from the fore
