Integrative Computational and Experimental Approaches Reveal the Protective Role of Moderate Caffeine Intake Against Apical Periodontitis Induced Bone Loss.

AIM: To investigate whether moderate systemic caffeine intake modulates the progression of apical periodontitis (AP) and associated alveolar bone loss, combining in vivo rat experiments with in silico molecular docking to explore potential mechanisms. METHODOLOGY: Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 8 per group): control, caffeine, AP, AP + caffeine. AP was induced by pulp exposure of mandibular first molars and allowed to develop for 28 days. Animals in caffeine groups received 10 mg/kg/day by orogastric gavage during the experimental period. The antioxidant capacity

Preliminary In Vivo Evaluation of Coracoclavicular Ligament Mechanics During Shoulder Elevation After Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Persistent instability and altered scapular mechanics after acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) reconstruction may stem from inadequate replication of native coracoclavicular (CC) ligament function. However, in vivo data on postoperative CC ligament behavior during dynamic shoulder motion remain lacking. PURPOSE: To assess in vivo functional distance and timing characteristics of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments during active shoulder elevation after ACJ reconstruction, using dynamic stereo x-ray (DSX) imaging and patient-specific 3-dimensional (3D) models. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectio

A coarse-to-fine restoration framework integrating deep semantic inpainting and texture-aware refinement for Jinling school landscapes.

Traditional Chinese ink paintings on paper or silk are highly susceptible to degradation. Over time, physical decay such as creases not only damages the surface but also obscures the original brushwork. Virtual restoration, as a non-contact digital intervention, has emerged as a vital tool for heritage preservation. Yet, generic generative models-most notably GANs and Diffusion-often struggle with the dense, layered textures of the Jinling School(), particularly the Jimofa () technique. GANs tend to "hallucinate" details that clash with traditional brushwork logic, while Latent-based models ca

Visualization of changes in relationships among traits over time; example in type traits.

Genetic evaluations usually include many correlated traits. Their evaluation and use in the selection index rely on genetic parameters that change over time, with these changes potentially accelerating under genomic selection. However, estimating the changes with current methods and large genomic information is computationally prohibitive, and interpreting changes in relationships among many traits is difficult. The purpose of this study is to present a methodology to visualize changes in complex relationships among traits over time. Data included genetic correlations among 18 linear conformat

Mediastinal adipose tissue as an active player in cardiovascular disease: a multimodality imaging narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mediastinal adipose tissue comprises several distinct fat depots, including epicardial, pericoronary, pericardial, and paracardial adipose tissue, which surround the heart and great vessels and actively contribute to cardiovascular pathophysiology. Under physiological conditions, these adipose compartments exert protective metabolic and mechanical functions; however, in pathological states, their expansion and remodeling promote inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, fibrosis, and atherosclerotic progression. This narrative review aims to summarize the current evidenc

Prioritising measures and interventions to strengthen research reproducibility: a Delphi consultation study.

BACKGROUND: Research reproducibility - the ability of others to independently verify scientific findings by following the same methods and data - is a fundamental aspect of research integrity. When this fails, trust in evidence is undermined and research resources are wasted. Reproducibility measures describe the standards that define reproducible research, and reproducibility interventions are the actions used to improve those standards. There is little agreement on which practices and initiatives should be prioritised for implementation in practice. This study aimed to establish expert conse

From Technical Performance to Assistive Validity: A Critical Review of Evaluation Approaches for AI-Enabled Assistive Technology.

Background/Objectives: The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into assistive technologies challenges evaluation models traditionally centred on usability, satisfaction and device-related outcomes. Because AI-enabled systems are probabilistic, data-dependent and adaptive, their evaluation must also address algorithmic behaviour, user agency and consequences in everyday life. This critical review aimed to identify and compare standardised instruments, frameworks and structured procedures for evaluating AI-enabled assistive technologies and to determine the extent to which the

Submanifold sparse convolutional networks for automated 3D segmentation of kidneys and kidney tumours in computed tomography.

Accurate delineation of kidney tumours in Computed Tomography (CT) is essential for downstream quantitative analysis and precision oncology that could enable personalised treatments, but manual segmentation is a specialised task, time-consuming and difficult to scale in routine practice. Automated 3D segmentation remains challenging in medical imaging, where images are large and dense volumes of data, making high-resolution processing with conventional dense convolutional neural networks computationally expensive, and often reliant on downsampling or patch-based inference. To overcome this pro

Comparative study of time- and frequency-difference electrical impedance tomography for breast cancer detection.

A multifrequency electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system was evaluated for its ability to detect conductive inclusions simulating carcinomas in breast phantoms, with a comparative analysis of time-difference (TD) and frequency-difference (FD) reconstruction approaches. The proposed EIT V5 system employs two concentric rings of 16 electrodes to acquire surface voltage measurements at multiple excitation frequencies (50 kHz, 500 kHz, and 1 MHz). Image reconstruction was performed using the linear back projection algorithm, and system performance was quantitatively assessed through spatial o

Clinical indication-based CT scan range reduction: A scoping review of radiation dose savings and diagnostic accuracy.

INTRODUCTION: Computed Tomography (CT) is central to modern imaging practice and accounts for over 60% of the collective radiation dose from medical imaging, underscoring the need for optimisation. Adjusting the scan range based on clinical indication is an evidence-based method for dose optimisation. However, the evidence remains dispersed across indications without a concise cross‑domain synthesis; this review consolidates evidence on indication-based scan range optimisation, evaluating its impact on radiation dose, diagnostic accuracy, and implications for missed findings across multiple CT

Respiratory Disease Detection: A Systematic Review of AI-Based Approaches, from Audio and Visual Unimodal Methods to Multimodal Integration.

Background: Respiratory diseases (RDs), including asthma, COVID-19, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia, remain a major global health challenge, contributing substantially to global morbidity and mortality. Conventional diagnosis relies heavily on clinicians' expertise to interpret respiratory sounds and radiographic images, a process that can be subjective, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have enabled automated diagnostic approaches that can improve the efficiency, consis

Outcome-driven dosimetry optimization for [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radiopharmaceutical therapy: proof of concept on single time point dosimetry optimization.

PURPOSE: Internal dosimetry in radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) traditionally prioritizes methodological optimization driven by physical dose accuracy. However, even recommended multiple-time-point (MTP) dosimetry remains subject to uncertainties related to limited sampling schedules, pharmacokinetic, and curve-fitting modeling assumptions. In patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 RPT, we explored an outcome-driven dosimetry optimization strategy by comparing MTP and single-time-point (STP) dosimetry, and identifying optimal time

Multimodal Assessment of Consciousness with Brain-Computer Interfaces and Artificial Intelligence: From Acquired Brain Injury to Neurodegenerative Disease.

The assessment of consciousness has been shaped largely by research on acquired disorders of consciousness after acute or chronic brain injury, but similar problems of unreliable behavioral expression increasingly arise in neurodegenerative disease. This translational overlap is especially relevant when preserved cognition, awareness, or intentionality cannot be reliably expressed because of severe motor impairment, fluctuating arousal, cognitive decline, aphasia, apraxia, or impaired cooperation. In neurodegenerative disease, degeneration of arousal systems, large-scale brain networks, cognit

Intra- and inter-rater reliability of skeletal muscle mass MRI assessment among adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) can lead to reduced physical performance, poor quality of life, increased mortality, fall-related fractures, cardiopulmonary ailments, cancers, cachexia, and sarcopenia. While computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are considered gold standards for non-invasive SMM assessment, MRI offers advantages such as superior tissue contrast and a lack of radiation exposure. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the reliability of measuring SMM with MRI and addresses gaps related to differences in s

Domain-independent PPG signal quality assessment framework via representation learning.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a widely used non-invasive sensing technique for monitoring cardiovascular and respiratory parameters, however, its measurements are highly susceptible to artifacts, which can degrade signal quality and, in turn, the accuracy of derived vital signs. Reliable PPG signal quality assessment (SQA) is therefore critical, yet existing SQA methods often rely on handcrafted features or ad-hoc thresholds and tend to be dataset-specific, limiting their generalizability across different sensor locations and users. To address these gaps, this paper proposes a novel SQA approa
