This review examines recent advances in the application technologies of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) as sustainable biological control agents in agricultural systems. Although synthetic pesticides have long been used for pest management, their adverse effects on non-target organisms and the environment have raised significant concerns, leading to increasing restrictions and a growing demand for alternative strategies. In this context, EPNs have emerged as promising biocontrol agents due to their effectiveness against a wide range of insect pests, safety for humans and the environment, and

BACKGROUND: The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) is a globally distributed pest that has developed widespread resistance to multiple classes of insecticides, posing a persistent challenge to cruciferous crop production. Isofluorpyramide is a newly developed isoxazoline insecticide that was created by modifying the structure of fluxametamide. This study aimed to evaluate its insecticidal activity against P. xylostella and to explore its underlying mode-of-action (MoA).
RESULTS: Leaf-dip bioassays revealed that isofluorpyramide exhibited comparable toxicity to fluxametamide against 2nd-in

Ecologically simplified corn fields lack the plant diversity-derived resources necessary for supporting robust beneficial insect populations capable of preventing pest outbreaks. Interseeding cover crops into established corn is a way that farmers can diversify cropland plant communities and restore ecosystem functions. Here, we examine how foliar, epigeic, and subterranean arthropod communities differ between corn monocultures and corn interseeded with cover crops. We also examine how predator activity and predation are affected by interseeded cover crops in corn fields. Predators, herbivores

It is difficult to control insect pests with piercing-sucking mouthparts such as aphids due to their concealed feeding behavior and limited exposure to foliar-applied insecticides. Although systemic insecticides with internal translocation through plant tissues provide a practical alternative to contact-based strategies, they often suffer from uneven deposition and behavioral avoidance by pests. Furthermore, conventional assays used for investigating systemicity provide useful information on insecticide performance; however, their outcomes can reflect a combination of systemic translocation an

The increasing use of veterinary anthelmintics, which mainly enter the environment via livestock feces, raises concerns about side effects on non-target organisms in agricultural landscapes. While most studies have focused on species at a single trophic level that are directly exposed to these drugs, little is known about their indirect effects on interacting species across trophic levels and the associated ecological functions. To address this research gap, we conducted the first experimental study on a terrestrial species assemblage exposed to soil spiked with a formulation of the commonly u

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of human and animal trypanosomes. The Glossina palpalis gambiensis Burkina Faso (BKF) colony, established in 1972 and rejuvenated once in 1981, is a long-standing closed colony used extensively for research and vector control. While its performance and competitiveness for sterile insect technique (SIT) programs are regularly monitored, its vector competence (VC) data are outdated. This study aimed to update the VC data of this 47-year-old colony (from the onset of experiment in 2019) against Trypanosoma congolense and T. brucei brucei

BACKGROUND: Resistance and tolerance are two distinct, but complementary defense strategies to mitigate the effects of a viral infection. Resistance limits viral load. Tolerance minimizes health impacts without directly acting on viruses. In Aedes spp. mosquitoes, which are vectors of the public-health relevant Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses, the predominance of one mechanism over the other has ecological and evolutionary implications because resistance supports an arm-race between mosquitoes and viruses, whereas tolerance favors neutral or positive effects on viruses. The baculovirus/insect cell system is widely used for recombinant protein and virus-like particles (VLP) production, but its performance at high cell density is limited by infection-associated metabolic stress. In this study, a targeted metabolic footprinting approach was applied to characterize the extracellular metabolome of Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 cells during baculovirus-mediated production of rabies VLP in chemically defined medium. Infected and uninfected cultures were cultivated in controlled bioreactor runs, and extracellular carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids, and nucleosides

Zoonotic helminths are responsible for the majority of helminthic infections occurring in humans globally. Environmental systems serve as a reservoir for zoonotic helminths, facilitating their transmission to humans and animals. Livestock farms may serve as hotspots for zoonotic transmission, increasing infection risk. Focusing on goat farms in Ratchaburi Province, Thailand, we aim to detect and identify zoonotic helminths present in the soil environment through morphological and molecular techniques. Soil samples (n = 270) were collected from 30 goat farms in Ratchaburi Province, and helminth

The discovery of the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia as an obligate symbiont of. filarial nematodes has led to antibiotic-based treatments for filarial diseases. While lab. and clinical studies have yielded promising results, recent animal studies revealed that Wolbachia levels rebound following treatment with the antibiotic rifampicin. Previous work revealed that a potential source of the bacterial rebound in female worms were dense clusters of Wolbachia in ovarian tissue. The number, size, and density of these Wolbachia clusters were not diminished despite antibiotic treatment. Here we defi

Glossina austeni Newstead (Diptera: Glossinidae) is a competent vector of the trypanosomes causing human African trypanosomiasis and the African animal trypanosomosis. Management of this pest has primarily involved trapping methods, Sterile Insect Technique, and research into vector competence-symbiotic interactions. Nevertheless, the use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) in integrated pest management programs for G. austeni control remains limited. Moreover, different tsetse fly species exhibit varying susceptibility to different EPF strains, indicating that no single strain is universally effe

Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has proven effective to reduce tsetse population density in large infected areas where animal African trypanosomosis (AAT) and human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) elimination was difficult to achieve. However, the decrease in mass production of insectary-reared tsetse and the limited but incomplete knowledge on symbiont-trypanosome interaction over time, impede large-scale use of SIT. We investigated the spatiotemporal changes in symbiont prevalence and symbiont-trypanosome interactions in wild tsetse of Sora-Mboum AAT focus in northern Cameroon, collected in 201

Pseudorabies (PR) is an infectious disease caused by the pseudorabies virus (PRV), affecting various domesticated and wild animals. Since pigs are the only natural hosts of PRV, PR poses a serious threat to the pig farming industry. Currently, PR is primarily prevented through vaccination with inactivated vaccines or genetically modified attenuated live vaccines. Developing safe and effective genetically engineered vaccines would facilitate the eradication and control of PR. In this study, the PRV vaccine strain Bartha-K61 was used as the reference strain. The gB protein was expressed via the

Tsetse flies and trypanosomosis significantly impact bovine production and human health in sub-Saharan Africa, exacerbating underdevelopment, malnutrition, and poverty. Despite various control strategies, long-term success has been limited. This study evaluates the combined use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) and the sterile insect technique (SIT) to combat tsetse flies. Eleven EPF isolates were tested against teneral males of Glossina pallidipes, focusing on mortality rates, radial growth, and impacts on fly fitness. Temperature effects on conidial growth, sporulation, and spore yield of SIT-

Bio-insecticidal research has focused on long-term vector control using essential oils (EOs). This study examined the larvicidal, oviposition-deterrent, and repellent properties of five medicinal herb-based EO formulations (EOFs) on mosquitoes that are vectors of dengue, filariasis, and malaria. EOFs were significantly more toxic to the larvae and pupae of Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles stephensi, and Aedes aegypti with LC50 = 9.23, 12.85, and 14.46 ppm, as well with 10.22, 11.39, and 12.81 ppm, with oviposition active indexes of -0.84, -0.95, and -0.92, respectively.
