HGAlign: Biologically preserving batch correction and classification for metabolomics via heterogeneous graph alignment.

Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is a powerful tool for profiling complex biological samples. However, large-scale metabolomics experiments often suffer from substantial batch effects caused by variations in sample processing, instrument conditions, and acquisition protocols. These non-biological variations obscure true biological signals, reduce reproducibility, and compromise the generalizability of downstream models. Existing correction methods either rely on oversimplified linear assumptions or risk over-correcting and removing meaningful biological

Modifying the severity and appearance of psoriasis using deep learning to simulate anticipated improvements during treatment.

A neural network was trained to generate synthetic images of severe and moderate psoriatic plaques, after being trained on 375 photographs of patients with psoriasis taken in a clinical setting. A latent w-space vector was identified that allowed the degree of severity of the psoriasis in the generated images to be modified. A second latent w-space vector was identified that allowed the size of the psoriasis plaque to be modified and this was used to show the potential to alleviate bias in the training data. With appropriate training data, such an approach could see a future application in a c

GCN-BBB: Deep Learning Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) Permeability PharmacoAnalytics with Graph Convolutional Neural (GCN) Network.

The Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is a selective barrier between the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the peripheral system, regulating the distribution of molecules. BBB permeability has been crucial in CNS-targeting drug development, such as glioblastoma-related drug discovery. In addition, more CNS diseases still present significant challenges, for instance, neurological disorders like Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and drug abuse. Conversely, cannabinoid drugs that do not cross the BBB are needed to avoid off-target CNS psychotropic effects. In vitro and in vivo experiments measuring BBB permeabilit

A depression detection approach leveraging transfer learning with single-channel EEG.

Objective.Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a widespread mental disorder that affects health. Many methods combining electroencephalography (EEG) with machine learning or deep learning have been proposed to objectively distinguish between MDD and healthy individuals. However, most current methods detect depression based on multichannel EEG signals, which constrains its application in daily life. The context in which EEG is obtained can vary in terms of study designs and EEG equipment settings, and the available depression EEG data is limited, which could also potentially lessen the efficacy o

Towards the automatic detection of activities of daily living using eye-movement and accelerometer data with neural networks.

Early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, improves treatment and care outcomes for patients. Early signs of cognitive decline can be detected using functional scales, which are written records completed by a clinician or carer, detailing a patient's capability to perform routine activities of daily living. For example, tasks requiring planning, such as meal preparation, are some of the earliest affected by early mild cognitive impairment. In this article, we describe work towards the development of a system to automatically discriminate and objectively quantif

Deep learning for disease outbreak prediction: a parallel LSTM-CNN model.

Early warning signals (EWSs) are vital for implementing preventive measures before a disease turns into a pandemic. While new diseases exhibit unique behaviours, they often share fundamental characteristics from a dynamical systems perspective. Moreover, measurements during disease outbreaks are often corrupted by different noise sources, posing challenges for time-series classification (TSC) tasks. In this study, we address the problem of having a robust EWS for disease outbreak prediction using a parallel long short-term memory-convolutional neural network deep learning model in the domain o

Toward confident prostate cancer detection using ultrasound: a multi-center study.

PURPOSE: Deep learning-based analysis of micro-ultrasound images to detect cancerous lesions is a promising tool for improving prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis. An ideal model should confidently identify cancer while responding with appropriate uncertainty when presented with out-of-distribution inputs that arise during deployment due to imaging artifacts and the biological heterogeneity of patients and prostatic tissue. METHODS: Using micro-ultrasound data from 693 patients across 5 clinical centers who underwent micro-ultrasound guided prostate biopsy, we train and evaluate convolutional neu

Time-varying compartmental models with neural networks for pandemic infection forecasting.

The emergence and spread of deadly pandemics has repeatedly occurred throughout history, causing widespread infections and life loss. Forecasting the progression of pandemics is crucial for decision-makers to achieve its mitigation. This predictive task constitutes a challenge due to the non-stationary nature of pandemics, and changes in adopted policies and social reactions to them. Motivated by this, we present a hybrid pandemic infection forecasting methodology that integrates compartmental modelling and machine learning approaches. In particular, we develop a compartmental model that inclu

Site-Invariant Meta-Modulation Learning for Multisite Autism Spectrum Disorders Diagnosis.

Large amounts of fMRI data are essential to building generalized predictive models for brain disease diagnosis. In order to conduct extensive data analysis, it is often necessary to gather data from multiple organizations. However, the site variation inherent in multisite resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) leads to unfavorable heterogeneity in data distribution, negatively impacting the identification of biomarkers and the diagnostic decision. Several existing methods have alleviated this shift of domain distribution (i.e., multisite problem). Statistical tuning sche

Smartphone-based device for point-of-care diagnostics of pulmonary inflammation using convolutional neural networks (CNNs).

In pulmonary inflammation diseases, like COVID-19, lung involvement and inflammation determine the treatment regime. Respiratory inflammation is typically arisen due to the cytokine storm and the leakage of the vessels for immune cells recruitment. Currently, such a situation is detected by the clinical judgment of a specialist or precisely by a chest CT scan. However, the lack of accessibility to the CT machines in many poor medical centers as well as its expensive service, demands more accessible methods for fast and cheap detection of lung inflammation. Here, we have introduced a novel meth
