Radiographical and clinical evaluation of extreme lateral interbody fusion: effects of cage size and instrumentation type with a minimum of 1-year follow-up.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective single-cohort observational study. OBJECTIVES: To compare cage settling rates after extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) across various implant sizes and fixation types. Secondary objectives were to detect factors associated with cage settling and correlation with clinical and radiographical improvement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intervertebral cage settling can occur postoperatively after interbody fusion, limiting the long-term correction achieved with surgery. METHODS: Clinical and radiographical data were collected on 140 consecutive patients treated with

Anterior cervical discectomy for one- and two-level cervical disc disease: the controversy surrounding the question of whether to fuse, plate, or both.

Since the introduction of anterior approaches to the cervical spine for the surgical treatment of degenerative disc disease, controversies have developed regarding the necessity of fusion following anterior cervical discectomy, the use of allografts instead of autologous bone for fusion, and, recently, the employment of anterior cervical plating systems in addition to fusion for uncomplicated disc disease. We reviewed seven clinical papers dealing with these issues; these articles surveyed a total of 1153 patients. Several observations can be made from these reviews. First, there is little or

The incidence of osteoarthritic change on computed tomography of Korean temporomandibular disorder patients diagnosed by RDC/TMD; a retrospective study.

Objective Osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is generally thought to be an age-related disease like those of other joints. This study aims to investigate the incidence of computed tomographic (CT) OA changes in Korean temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients diagnosed by the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). Materials and methods The clinical records and radiographs of 1038 TMD patients (297 men and 741 women with mean age 31.1 ± 17.4 and 34.0 ± 16.2, respectively) diagnosed based on RDC/TMD Axis I in 2010 were reviewed. Results The incidence rate of OA cha

Postmortem computed tomography and histopathology of distal limb lesions in giraffe (Giraffa spp.) under managed care.

Foot structure and function are essential to the health and mobility of giraffe (Giraffa spp.), yet comprehensive evaluations of distal limb pathology remain limited. This retrospective necropsy-based study used postmortem computed tomography (CT) of frozen distal limbs with targeted histopathology to characterize osseous and soft-tissue changes in a historical cohort of giraffe under managed care. Seventy-three distal limbs from 21 giraffe housed at 12 North American zoos (necropsies performed between 2004-2023) were evaluated. Lesions were graded on a scale of 0-3, and localized to either th

Exploring risk factors for comorbid depression in osteoarthritis: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent musculoskeletal disease, affecting approximately 600 million people. It is characterised by progressive degeneration of the articular cartilage, osteophyte formation and asymmetric joint space narrowing, leading to pain, stiffness and functional impairment. The current focus of disease management is on symptom relief and functional improvement. However, these interventions frequently do not provide adequate outcomes. This may be attributed to a lack of consideration for contextual factors, including the presence of comorbidities

Obesity in children with low back pain: implications with imaging phenotypes and opioid use.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Low back pain (LBP) is common in children and adolescents, carrying substantial risk for recurrence and continuation into adulthood. Studies have linked obesity to the development of pediatric LBP; however, its association with lumbar spine degeneration, alignment parameters, and opioid use remains debated. PURPOSE: Considering the increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity and LBP and the inherent issues with opioid use, this study aimed to assess the association of obesity with lumbar spine degeneration, spinopelvic alignment, and opioid therapy among pediatric patients.

Transfacet Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: Technical Description and Early Results.

Introduction The oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion (OLLIF) is a relatively new method of lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) that utilizes a trans-Kambin approach to the disc space. The OLLIF can be performed from T12-S1 in the majority of cases but is occasionally obstructed at the L5-S1 level by osteophytes, an overgrown facet joint and/or prominent sacral ala. Transfacet OLLIF (TF-OLLIF) is a novel method for LIF in which the disc space is accessed by drilling through hypertrophic facets with an OLLIF approach. We provide a proof-of-concept report on the TF-OLLIF surgical technique and repo

Partial arthroscopic trapeziectomy with or without ligament reconstruction to treat primary thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis.

Many surgical options have been proposed for the treatment of first carpometacarpal (CMC1) osteoarthritis. Conventional techniques are invasive, so we wanted to develop an arthroscopic technique. Partial trapeziectomy combined with various interpositions and ligament reconstruction is a long-standing intervention. As in total trapeziectomy, the combination with ligament reconstruction remains controversial. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the benefits of adding an abductor pollicis longus (APL) ligament reconstruction to partial trapeziectomy performed under arthroscopy. This study an

[Evidence-based therapy for cartilage lesions in the knee - regenerative treatment options].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of cartilage defects has seen a shift from replacement to regeneration in the last few years. The rationale behind this development is the improvement in the quality-of-care for the growing segment of young patients who are prone to arthroplasty complications because of their specific characteristics - young age, high level of activity, high demand for functionality. These days, two of the most popular regenerative treatments are microfracture and autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). Although these new options show promising results, no final algorithm for the t
