INTRODUCTION: In this survey we evaluated the usefulness of ultrasonography (US) in the diagnosis, and in the treatment of complicated hydat … cutaneous US-guided sampling. All patients with complicated cystic echinococcosis were treated with Albendazole 800 mg/day for at least 3 months. In addition to this therapy, 12 underwent US-guided drainage (9 infected cysts, 2 bilomas, 2 cysto-pleural fistulas, 1 intrasplenic hematoma); of these patients 3 subsequently underwent surgery because US-guided tre …

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and laboratory findings in children with toxocariasis.
METHODS: Fifty-four children with reactive serology to Toxocara determined by ELISA were prospectively identified between January 1998 and September 2000. The patients were divided into three groups: asymptomatic children (n 24), those with visceral larva migrans (n 16) and those with ocular larva migrans (n 14). Age, serology titers, and eosinophil count at diagnosis were compared among the groups. The patients received treatment with albendazole 10-15 mg/kg/day for 15 days or thiabendazole 25 mg/kg/da…

Optimal use of anthelmintics in children is of major public health importance because the parasites involved probably infect over 2 billion persons, and most are especially common and debilitating in children. Well targeted drug delivery, particularly via community chemotherapy, can substantially decrease aggregate morbidity and mortality and also improve growth rates, physical fitness and activity, cognitive and school performance, and social well-being. The drugs discussed here include the benzimidazoles (albendazole, levamisole and mebendazole), pyrantel, praziquantel, oxamniquine, ivermect…

BACKGROUNDS: The incidence of angiostrongyliasis is increasing in recent decades due to the expanding endemic areas all over the world. Clinicians face tremendous challenge of diagnosing angiostrongyliasis because of the lack of awareness of the disease and less effective definitive laboratory tests.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man initially manifested skin itching, emesis, myalgia and quadriparesis. With progressive weakness of four limbs and elevated protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), he was diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome and treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a morbid disease caused by the tissue-invasive nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, … ecid and sulfinpyrazone exhibit a synergistic macrofilaricidal effect when used in combination with albendazole. The results of this study demonstrate that Bm-UGT is an essential protein for adult worm survival. Lack of prior IgE sensitization in infected and endemic populations suggest it may be a feasible vaccine candidate. The finding that sulfinpyrazone a …

BACKGROUND: Malaria burden remains high in the sub-Saharan region where helminths are prevalent and where children are often infected with both types of parasites. Although the effect of helminths on malaria infection is evident, the impact of these co-infections is not clearly elucidated yet and the scarce findings are conflicting. In this study, we investigated the effect of schistosomiasis, considering soil-transmitted helminths (STH), on prevalence and incidence of Plasmodium falciparum infection.
METHODOLOGY: This longitudinal survey was conducted in school-age children living in two rur

BACKGROUND: Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare cause of posterior uveitis in the United Kingdom. It typically presents unilaterally in children and young adults but rarely bilateral cases have been reported. It is also rare to have multiple worms in the same eye causing the clinical picture. In this article, we present a challenging case of DUSN in a young girl unresponsive to conventional treatments suggesting the possibility of multiple worms being present in the same eye.

BACKGROUND: The disease course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is often altered by existing or newly acquired coincident infections.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To assess the influence of pre-existing Wuchereria bancrofti infection on HIV progression, we performed a case-controlled treatment study of HIV positive individuals with (FIL+) or without (FIL-) W. bancrofti infection. Twenty-eight HIV+/FIL+ and 51 matched HIV+/FIL- subjects were treated with a single dose of diethylcarbamazine and albendazole (DEC/Alb) and followed for a year at regular intervals. Sixteen of the HIV+/FIL+ …

The diagnosis of eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) is rare and challenging. This condition is frequently misdiagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis, lymphoma, schistosomiasis, Wegener's granuloma, severe acute respiratory syndrome, or severe community-acquired pneumonia. Herein, we report a case in which computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous lung biopsy was used to diagnose EP without alveolar eosinophilia or peripheral eosinophilia. A roundworm identified in the patient's stool confirmed the precise diagnosis to be parasitic EP. This is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of EP confirmed

Muscular infestation with larval stage of Taenia solium is a well-recognised entity but cysticercosis of the head and neck region is a rarity. We present a case of 35-year-old young man with diffuse swelling of 3.5×4 cm in the parotid region on the right side of the face with signs of inflammation. Diagnosis was established on high-resolution ultrasonography which revealed it to be of parasitic origin. The patient was managed with antihelminthic pharmacotherapy and improved within a month. Thus cysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous swellings of the he

The region of the Pacific is historically affected by lymphatic filariasis (LF). Following the World Health Assembly resolution in 1997, the Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was launched. In the Pacific, the World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented from 1999, the Pacific Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (PacELF) bringing together the 22 countries and territories, in a common effort to eliminate the disease. The strategy is based on Mass Drug Administration (MDA); in annual single dose during 5 years of a Diethycarbamazine/Albendazole association distribu…

A 53-year-old woman presented with the complaints of abdominal pain on right upper quadrant, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Her physical exam was unremarkable except for right upper quadrant tenderness. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a tubular, mobile, non-shadowing echogenic structure within the slightly dilated common bile duct. Examination of feces for ova suggested the diagnosis of ascariasis. In this report, ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatographic findings of the case are described before and after medical treatment.

A 25-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy presented with neurocutaneous cysticercosis involving the eyelid. Both patients had hundreds of scattered subcutaneous cysticerci. They were arranged in clusters over the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck. Such clustering of cysticerci is highly suggestive of central nervous system (CNS) involvement, as both the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the CNS are supplied by the carotid artery and cysticerci travel via the hematogenous route. We used ultrasonography to diagnose subcutaneous cysticercosis, which showed characteristic low reflective cysts and
