Cardiologic aspects of aortic valve surgery--who? when? what?

The title invites a discussion of a patient (age, lesion, physical condition, compliance, and other organ pathology) with aortic valve disea … larify the current confusion. There is presumably an "optimal" way to hold a golf club or to kick a football?! The skill and judgement of the operators will, inevitably and sometimes regrettably, always vary.

Conditioning Brain Responses to Improve Quadriceps Function in an Individual With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Persistent quadriceps weakness and activation failure are common in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. A growing body of evidence indicates that this chronic quadriceps dysfunction could be partly mediated due to reduced corticospinal excitability. However, current rehabilitation approaches do not directly target corticospinal deficits, which may be critical for restoring optimal clinical outcomes after the surgery. This case study tested the feasibility of operant conditioning of torque responses evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to i

The body composition, nutritional knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and future education needs of senior schoolboy rugby players in Ireland.

PURPOSE: This study examined the body composition, nutritional knowledge, behaviors, attitudes, and educational needs of senior schoolboy rugby players in Ireland. METHODS: Participants included 203 male rugby players age 15-18 yr competing at Senior School's Cup level in Leinster, Ireland. Estimation of body composition included measurement of height, weight, and percentage body fat (PBF; using bioelectrical impedance analysis, Tanita BC-418). Nutritional knowledge, behaviors, attitudes, and education needs were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: The range of PBF was 5.1-25.3%. Sixty-eight

[Evaluation of results after arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament with a free graft of the patellar ligament].

From among 312 patients treated with arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (one-incision, transtibial with the use of ipsilateral bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft) between 1992 and 1994 256 (82%) were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 26.4 months. An aggressive rehabilitative protocol advocated by Shelbourne has been employed. Stability of the knee has been assessed with KT-1000 arthrometer and IKDC and OAK forms served to evaluate the results. In 77% of the cases nearly normal function of the knee has been restored (87% excellent and good results in OAK form). Arthroscopic

Parent-Reported History of Traumatic Dental Injuries and Current Sports Participation Among Paediatric Dental Patients in Central Poland: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are among the most common oral health problems in children and adolescents and may significantl … hildren currently participating in sports than among non-participants (49.7% vs. 31.3%; p < 0.001). Football participation was associated with a higher occurrence of reported TDI. Rural residence and lower parental education level were also associated with a higher occurrence of reported TDI. In the fitted logistic regression model, current sports particip …

Population Variations in Helmet Fit Affect Calculated Head Injury Risk in Blunt Impact.

However, the degree to which subject-speci … ant to consider for helmets where the user sees repeated, low-intensity impacts such as in American football. Our analysis was limited to one type of helmet, and we were unable to vary the geometry of the head, meaning that the data should be interpreted cautiously. INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGHER NERVOUS ACTIVITY AS A FACTOR IN ADAPTATION AND RECOVERY OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM IN ATHLETES.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of higher nervous activity (HNA) types on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in athletes after physical exertion. The primary objective was to identify the relationship between HNA types and the body's adaptive capacity, as well as to assess stress resilience and recovery efficiency. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study involved 144 male athletes aged 17-20 years (mean age: 18.5±1.5 years) engaged in football and track and field. Participants were classified into groups based on their higher nervous activity (HNA) types using the…

Normative values of resting heart rate variability in young male contact sport athletes: Reference values for the assessment and treatment of concussion.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the main determinants of heart rate variability (HRV) in male athletes aged 14 to 21 years who practice competitive contact sports and to integrate these determinants with the aim of defining normative values of short-term HRV in the time and frequency domains. METHODS: Participants (n = 369) were aged 14 to 21 years and included 221 football players and 148 ice hockey players. HRV was measured for 5 min at rest, and standard HRV parameters in the time and frequency domains were calculated. Heart rate (HR), age, body mass index (BMI), num…

Risk Factors for Reoperation and Performance-Based Outcomes After Operative Fixation of Foot Fractures in the Professional Athlete: A Cross-Sport Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Professional athletes are predisposed to fractures of the foot due to large stresses placed on the lower extremity. These players are concerned with efficiently returning to play at a high level. Return-to-play rates after operative treatment have been previously reported, yet performance outcomes after such treatment are generally unknown in this population. HYPOTHESIS: Overall, professional athletes sustaining a foot fracture would return to play at high rates with little impact on postoperative performance or league participation. However, National Football League (NFL) athlete…

Carpal fractures in athletes.

A review of the literature shows that 3% to 9% of all athletic injuries occur to the hand or wrist. Also, hand and wrist injuries are more common in pubescent and adolescent athletes than adults. Although knee and shoulder injuries are more common athletic injuries, an injury to the hand or wrist significantly can impair the athlete's ability to throw or catch a ball, or swing a bat or racquet. A college football player trains year round for just 11 or 12 hours of playing time. An athletic injury that occurs during the season can have profound consequences for the athlete's career and emotions…
