Full veneer versus traditional veneer preparation: a discussion of interproximal extension.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Traditional veneer preparation has come to represent an almost universally accepted guideline of veneer preparation. It calls for an interproximal finish line at or just into the contact point. However, in certain situations, such an approach can have functional and esthetic limitations. PURPOSE: This article reviews those functional and esthetic limitations and discusses an alternative technique, the full veneer preparation. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed in relation to veneer cases with malaligned teeth, diastema, discoloration, black s

The connective tissue with partial thickness double pedicle graft: the results of 100 consecutively-treated defects.

Obtaining predictable root coverage has been a goal of periodontal therapy for some time. The connective tissue with partial thickness double pedicle graft has been shown to produce predictable esthetic root coverage. The purpose of this study was to examine the results of the surgical technique on 100 consecutively treated defects. The procedure produced a mean root coverage of 97.7%. Root coverage of 100% was obtained 89% of the time. With this technique, esthetic root coverage can be accomplished in a predictable manner. Additionally, it was the intent of this study to examine whether or no

Periodontal health in a cohort of subjects with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

To evaluate periodontal health and oral health behaviors in a cohort of subjects with type 1 diabetes (T1D), 50 persons with T1D (30 males and 20 females; mean age: 35.2 years) were recruited from the Diabetology Unit of the Geneva University Hospitals; 50 nondiabetic persons matched for gender, age, and smoking status comprised the control group. We assessed periodontal health using the gingival index (GI), plaque index, probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL) and recorded self-reported attitudes and behaviors regarding dental care. The two groups we

Cellular dermal matrix used for root coverage: 18-month follow-up observation.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term stability of the root coverage results obtained with an acellular dermal matrix. The mean root coverage at 12 weeks postoperative was 91.7%. The mean root coverage at the final postoperative evaluation (mean 18.6 months) was 87.0%. This difference was not statistically or clinically significant. The root coverage results obtained with an acellular dermal matrix were predictable, esthetic, and stable over time.

Eruption of third permanent molars after the extraction of second permanent molars. Part 2: Functional occlusion and periodontal status.

Functional occlusion and periodontal health were investigated after orthodontic treatment that involved extraction of second molars and after eruption of the third molars in 37 patients (25 female, 12 male). The mean age was 21 years 9 months (range, 16 years 1 month-30 years 5 months). The third permanent molars invariably erupted into a position that maintained good functional occlusion. Sixty-three percent of patients had canine guidance in lateral excursion; the remainder of patients had satisfactory group function. There were only 2 non-working side interferences in the sample, 1 from a r

Is gingival bleeding a symptom of patients with type 1 von Willebrand disease? A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherent bleeding disorder resulting in prolonged bleeding time. Gingival bleeding is a frequently reported symptom of VWD. However, gingival bleeding is also known as a leading symptom of plaque-induced gingivitis and untreated periodontal disease. Gingival bleeding in VWD patients (VWD) may be triggered by gingival inflammation and not a genuine symptom. Thus, this study evaluated whether type 1 VWD determines an increased susceptibility to gingival bleeding in response to the oral biofilm. METHODS: Fifty cases and 40 controls were

A randomized clinical trial on the clinical and microbiological efficacy of a xanthan gel with chlorhexidine for subgingival use.

BACKGROUND: The main indication of the adjunctive use of local antimicrobials lies around situations in which the outcome of non-surgical mechanical treatment results in a limited number of residual pockets. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of the subgingival application of a xanthan-based 1.5% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel (Xan-CHX), adjunctive to scaling and root planing (SRP) in localized periodontitis. METHODS: Periodontitis patients with four to ten residual (after conventional SRP) or relapsing (during supportive periodontal treatment)

Longitudinal association between plaque and gingival bleeding in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Whereas accumulation of dentogingival plaque inevitably leads to inflammatory reactions in the adjacent gingival tissue, there is limited information with regard to factors influencing naturally occurring fluctuation between gingival health and disease. The major aims of the present study were to investigate site-specific associations between plaque and gingivitis as well as transition dynamics of naturally occurring gingivitis in smoking and non-smoking young adults. METHODS: 65 systemically healthy young adults, 19 to 30 years old, participated. 33 volunteers smoked at leas
