BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc degeneration (LDD), endplate damage, and osteoporosis (OP) are closely linked; however, research on the influence of sagittal alignment on bone mineral density (BMD) and LDD is limited. This study aimed to explore the relationship between BMD, degenerative changes in intervertebral discs (IVDs), and endplate damage in patients with OP based on the Roussouly classification.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 150 patients with and 150 without OP. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measured L1-4 vertebral BMD. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessed Pfirrman

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Skeletal muscle is an important contributor to joint health. Previous studies have shown that age-related muscle mass and strength loss are closely associated with the development of knee osteoarthritis. The objective of this study is to investigate whether a high plant protein/peptide nutrition supplementation can alleviate knee osteoarthritis by improving muscle mass and strength.
METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial that included participants aged 50-70 years diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis and sarcopenia was conducted in China from Februar

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spondylosis in the warfighter is a common musculoskeletal problem and can be career-ending especially if it requires fusion. Head-mounted equipment and increased biomechanical forces on the cervical spine have resulted in accelerated cervical spine degeneration. Current surgical gold standard is anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) is a nonfusion surgical alternative, and this can be effective in alleviating radiculopathy from foraminal stenosis caused by disc-osteophyte complex. Biomechanical studies have not been done to

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow edema (BME) in the acromioclavicular joint (ACj) may occur after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR), resulting in persistent postoperative ACj pain. We investigated the incidence and clinical characteristics of BME in ACj after ARCR.
METHODS: Patients exhibiting ACj-related symptoms prior to ARCR surgery, no BME in the ACj on MRI, and an ability to undergo 2-year postoperative physical and MRI examinations of the ACj were included. Patients who underwent distal clavicle resection or osteophyte resection below the ACj and those unable to achieve primary repair of t

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic myelopathy caused by severe anterior ossification is often progressive and fails to respond to conservative treatment. Removal of the compressing ossification is the most effective method but is hard to operate. In this study, we describe a novel one-stage posterior circumferential decompressive procedure assisted by an angled ultrasonic bone curette (UBC) for thoracic myelopathy caused by severe anterior ossification and evaluate its safety and efficacy.
METHODS: The current study enrolled 15 consecutive patients (five men and 10 women) with thoracic myelopathy caused by

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread disease that continues to lack approved and efficacious treatments that modify disease progression. Micronized dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (μ-dHACM) has been shown to be effective in reducing OA progression, but many of the engineering design parameters have not been explored. The objectives of this study were to characterize the particle size distributions of two μ-dHACM formulations and to investigate the influence of these distributions on the in vivo therapeutic efficacy of μ-dHACM. Male Lewis rats underwent medial meniscus transection (MMT)

This narrative review explores the role of subchondral bone in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA), emphasizing the biomechanical and biochemical contributions that it makes to disease progression. A fresh perspective is presented by the authors in the form of a novel hypothesis that implicates mechano-inflammatory disruption of the bone marrow (BM) microenvironmental ecosystem (BM niche), unresolved inflammation, and fibrosis as key drivers of OA pathogenesis and pain. BMLs, detectable via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), serve as dynamic imaging biomarkers that correlate with pain se

A metabolic syndrome (MetS) is accompanied by hyperuricemia, during which xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) catalyzes the production of uric acid. In the cohort study, a correlation between uric acid concentration in the synovial fluid and osteoarthritis (OA) incidence is observed. The purpose of our study was to elucidate XOR function in terms of correlation between MetS and OA. Seven week-old male C57BL6J mice were fed normal diet (ND) or high fat diet (HFD) with or without febuxostat (FEB), a XOR inhibitor. HFD stimulated xanthine oxidase activity in the IPFP and the visceral fat. OA changes at

OBJECTIVE: Injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) causes acute swelling around the joint and subsequent morphological alterations in the condyle. We aimed to evaluate changes in the three-dimensional architecture of the condyle induced with CFA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CFA was injected into the unilateral TMJ of rats and morphological changes in the condyle were assessed repeatedly for 14 days by in vivo micro-CT.
RESULTS: Osseous abnormalities of condyle were first observed at 3-5 days after CFA injection on the tomographic images, and the co

BACKGROUND: About 655 million persons worldwide are affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As no therapy modifies disease progression long-term, there is an immense clinical need for novel therapies. The joints are innervated by alpha calcitonin gene-related peptide (αCGRP)- and substance P (SP)-positive sensory nerve fibers. Both neuropeptides have trophic effects on target cells within the joints. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of SP- and αCGRP-expressing intra-articular (i.a.) applied rat(r)BMSC on cartilage and subchondral bone structural changes after OA induction.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic tuberoplasty is an optional technique for managing irreparable rotator cuff tears. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the resistance force during shoulder abduction in cases of irreparable rotator cuff tears and tuberoplasty.
HYPOTHESES: In shoulders with irreparable rotator cuff tears, impingement between the greater tuberosity (GT) and acromion increases the resistance force during dynamic shoulder abduction. Tuberoplasty is hypothesized to reduce this resistance force by mitigating impingement.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.

BACKGROUND: Women have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA) than men, including with obesity. To better understand this disparity, we investigated sex differences in metabolic and inflammatory factors associated with OA using a diet-induced mouse model of obesity. We hypothesized that 20 weeks of high-fat diet (HFD) would induce sexually dimorphic changes in both systemic and local risk factors of knee OA.
METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6J mice were fed Chow or HFD from 6 to 26 weeks of age (n = 12 per diet and sex). We performed broad metabolic phenotyping, 16 S gut microbiome ana

BACKGROUND: A mechanical block in the elbow due to osteophytes in the olecranon fossa is a common clinical symptom for elbow stiffness.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to understand the biomechanical characteristics or changes in the stiff elbow in the resting (or neutral) and swing position of the arm using a cadaveric model. The hypotheses included the following: (1) a difference exists in the articular contact pressure of the elbow by comparing the non-stiff and stiff models in in vivo studies; (2) the degree of stiffness would affect the increase of the joint loading of the elbow.

Ultrasound (US) could visualize the pathological anatomy of HO and the enlargement site and compression location of the nerve in the cubital tunnel [1]. We read with great interest the article of Jačisko et al[2]. In addition, we report rare US images of HO in direct contact with the swollen ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel that was not detected by plain radiography. A 60-year-old female presented with a six-month history of elbow pain. Her pain was located at the medial side of the right elbow joint and accompanied by numbness of the fifth finger. She had a history of excessive manual labor
