Arterial function of carotid and brachial arteries in postmenopausal vegetarians.

BACKGROUND: Vegetarianism is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. However, studies of arterial function in vegetarians are limited. METHODS: This study investigated arterial function in vegetarianism by comparing 49 healthy postmenopausal vegetarians with 41 age-matched omnivores. The arterial function of the common carotid artery was assessed by carotid duplex, while the pulse dynamics method was used to measure brachial artery distensibility (BAD), compliance (BAC), and resistance (BAR). Fasting blood levels of glucose, lipids, lipoprotein (a), high-sensitivity C-reactive

Aortic pulse wave velocity is associated with measures of subclinical target organ damage.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to evaluate the associations of central arterial stiffness, measured by aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), with subclinical target organ damage in the coronary, peripheral arterial, cerebral, and renal arterial beds. BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. We hypothesized that aPWV is associated with subclinical measures of atherosclerosis-coronary artery calcification (CAC) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) and arteriolosclerosis-brain white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR). METHODS: Partic

Pneumatic pulsatile ventricular assist device as a bridge to heart transplantation in pediatric patients.

Despite the remarkable advances with the use of ventricular assist devices (VAD) in adults, pneumatic pulsatile support in children is still limited. We report on our experience in the pediatric population. A retrospective review of 17 consecutive children offered mechanical support with Berlin Heart as a bridge to heart transplant from February 2002 to April 2010 was conducted. The median patient age was 3.9 years (75 days to 13.3 years). The median patient weight was 14.1 kg (2.9-43kg). Before VAD implantation, all children were managed by multiple intravenous inotropes and mechanical ventil

Effect of sildenafil on blood pressure and arterial wave reflection in treated hypertensive men.

As the effects of sildenafil are in part mediated by enhancing the action of nitric oxide and nitrates given acutely markedly reduce early wave reflection, we explored the effects of a single oral dose of sildenafil citrate (50 mg) on blood pressure and arterial wave reflection in treated hypertensive men in a single-blind randomised placebo controlled crossover study. Eight men (aged 57-76 years) with well controlled hypertension and erectile dysfunction and no contraindications to the use of sildenafil, were given either sildenafil 50 mg or placebo orally, with the second drug being given 2

Craniosacral therapy and the pathophysiology of the craniosacral system: Mechanisms, controversies, and proposed future research directions.

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, alternative therapeutic approach based on the concept of the craniosacral system and its inherent rhythm. This rhythm is a subtle, cyclical expansion and contraction of the dural membranes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which regulates intracranial pressure and the physiological function of the craniosacral system (CS). The CS constitutes a semi-closed, physiological hydraulic network comprising the skull (cranium), the sacrum (tailbone), the associated membranes, and the circulating CSF. Within this system, CSF provides both protection and nourish

Respiratory Function of Fontan Pediatric Patients with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Other Morphologies of Functionally Single Ventricle-A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Management of complex congenital heart defects with functionally single ventricle remains one of the greatest challenges of pediatric cardiology. The multistage surgical treatment completed with Fontan procedure is related to multiple complications. Due to non-pulsatile continuous pulmonary flow and chronic hypoxia, Fontan circulation may induce pulmonary endothelial dysfunction. However, the impact of Fontan physiology on respiratory system function is not well studied. The aim of the research was to assess respiratory function in Fontan pediatric patients with hypoplas

Influence of sigmoid plate and dura mater on vascular wall displacement, vibroacoustic/hydroacoustic sources characteristics, and frequency-loudness assessments of venous pulsatile tinnitus: A coupled-computational fluid dynamics study combining transcanal recording investigation.

Investigations of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) caused by sigmoid sinus wall anomalies (SSWAs) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have recently increased in prevalence. However, accurate modeling of anatomical structures regarding sigmoid plate dehiscence and acoustic sources of PT remains lacking. This study incorporates coupled CFD techniques, micro-computed tomography, and scanning electron microscope to reveal the vibroacoustic and hydroacoustic sources and displacement characteristics of the transverse-sigmoid sinus system. Furthermore, the in vivo transcanal-recording technique combined

Case report and analysis: Behçet's disease with lower extremity vein thrombosis and pseudoaneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a unique autoimmune chronic systemic vasculitis that affects veins and arteries of all sizes. BD can lead to recurrent vascular events, especially venous thrombosis, with an incidence rate of 40%, or pseudoaneurysms formed under long-term inflammatory reaction or iatrogenic stimulation. BD-related risk factors promote endothelial dysfunction, platelet activation and overactivation of tissue factors leading to mural inflammatory thrombi. Thrombosis may be the first clinical manifestation of BD. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old man complaining of progressive

Comparable Impairment of Vascular Endothelial Function by a Wide Range of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Devices.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS; ie, vaping devices) such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and newer coil-less ultrasonic vaping devices are promoted as less harmful alternatives to combustible cigarettes. However, their cardiovascular effects are understudied. We investigated whether exposure to aerosol from a wide range of ENDS devices, including a new ultrasonic vaping device, impairs endothelial function. AIMS AND METHODS: We measured arterial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in rats (n = 8/group) exposed to single session of 10 cycles of pulsatile 5-second e

Study protocol: baby-OSCAR trial: Outcome after Selective early treatment for Closure of patent ductus ARteriosus in preterm babies, a multicentre, masked, randomised placebo-controlled parallel group trial.

BACKGROUND: The question of whether to treat patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) early or wait until symptoms appear remains high on the research agenda for neonatal medicine. Around 7000 extremely preterm babies under 29 weeks' gestation are born in the UK every year. In 40% of cases the PDA will fail to close spontaneously, even by 4 months of age. Untreated PDA can be associated with several serious and life-threatening short and long-term complications. Reliable data to support clinical decisions about PDA treatment are needed to prevent serious complications in high risk babies, while minimisi

Evaluation of the predictive value of fetal Doppler ultrasound for neonatal outcome from the 36th week of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Early prediction of adverse neonatal outcome would be possible by Doppler impedance indices of middle cerebral artery (MCA), umbilical artery (UmA), and descending aortal artery (AO) that result in decrease neonatal morbidity and mortality rate. The aim of the present study was a determination of optimal value for the ratio of MCA to descending aorta blood flow (MCA/AO) impedance indices and its comparison with the ratio of MCA to UmA (MCA/UmA) impedance indices and their relationship with neonatal outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study on 212 pregnant

Outcome of mechanical cardiac support in children using more than one modality as a bridge to heart transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical cardiac support (MCS) can successfully be applied as a bridging strategy for heart transplantation (OHTx) in children with life-threatening heart failure. Emergent use of MCS is often required before establishing the likelihood of OHTx. This can require bridge-to-bridge strategies to increase survival on the waiting list. We compared the outcome of children with heart failure who underwent single MCS with those who required multiple MCS as a bridge to OHTx. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients aged less than 16 years was conducted. From March 1998 to October 2005,
