BACKGROUND: We studied the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment outcome and survival in children with HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) co-infection.
METHODS: All HIV infected children with symptoms or signs consistent with tuberculosis were screened. We studied 24 cases of culture confirmed TB from among a cohort of 213 HIV infected children. All these children were on HAART for their HIV infection. Information on TB was collected by retrospective chart review of these children.

Thirteen healthy subjects and 20 hemodialysis patients were studied to observe the delayed hypersensitivity skin tests (DHSTs) and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulating lymphocyte blastogenesis. We reviewed the reports about the development and the exacerbation of active tuberculosis and performed a retrospective analysis of 394 patients who were treated for active tuberculosis (TB) at our hospital from 1976 to 1997. The factors for the development and the exacerbation of active tuberculosis were the bacteriological status of the source, the age of the person infected, the degree of tuberculin sensitivity, BCG non-vaccination, non-chemoprophylaxis, the medical condition that increases the risk for tuberculosis, the presence of other infection, poor nutrition.

Random-bred Hartley and inbred Strain 2 and Strain 13 guinea pigs were inoculated for acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Sixty-six percent (69/103) of the Hartleys developed signs of EAE while the remaining 34% (34/103) were resistant. No Strain 2 and all Strain 13 guinea pigs developed EAE. A broad spectrum of immunologic parameters was investigated in 13 cases of myotonic muscular dystrophy (MyD), including those for cellular immunity which has attracted little attention in the past.
