INTRODUCTION: Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death in children around the world and are an under-recognized public health problem in the United States.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to highlight the nature of the problem in South Dakota and outline interventions that have been successful in reducing childhood injuries in other states.
METHODS: This quantitative retrospective study examined mortality files in South Dakota for children birth to 19 years of age who died between January 1, 2000 to December 28, 2007.
RESULTS: Although the number of deaths declined consi

Pediatric transanal impalement injuries are relatively uncommon and most are attributed to accidental fall on offending objects, sexual assault or blunt trauma. There may be difficulty in recognizing or properly treating such injuries because their severity may not be reflected externally. Evaluation of suspected rectal impalement injury involves careful history and physical examination and proper investigation. There are very few reports on pediatric perianal impalement with associated visceral injuries. We report a case of assault transanal impalement injury associated with mesenteric tear a

BACKGROUND: Accidental eye trauma with spray guns are rare, but potentially very serious, injuries. Although it is agreed that these injuries require immediate and vigorous therapy, the specifics of such therapy are poorly defined. With latex paint sprayer injuries to hands and extremities, resulting chemical-induced inflammation, high-pressure necrosis, ischemic necrosis, and gangrene require surgical debridement and possibly, amputation. With eye injuries, treatment is directed at preservation of vision, as there is a potential risk of visual loss.
OBJECTIVE: There is currently no consensus

BACKGROUND: Many victims of trauma have a history of repetitive accidental or violent injuries, which implies that trauma is not necessarily a random event. Recurrent trauma is thought to be a problem of urban areas, associated with criminal activities, but there are few data from rural areas that include the victims of nonintentional injuries.
METHODS: The prior trauma experience of 200 consecutive patients admitted for trauma was compared with that of 100 consecutive emergency nontrauma surgical admissions and 100 elective surgical admissions to a university hospital and level I trauma cent

To determine the risk of exposure to blood and body fluids potentially contaminated with infectious organisms, we instituted a prospective study of 100 gynecologic procedures performed at Hospital General Regional of Puebla, México. Accidental exposure to blood occurred during 8 procedures (8%). There were 8 glove tears (8%). Needlestick injuries occurred in 6% of the operations. The frequency of blood contamination, glove tears and percutaneous injuries is high; surgical personnel are at risk of contracting a blood-borne disease such as HIV infection or viral hepatitis. This case report offers a multidisciplinary interpretation of the violent death of a 4-year-old girl suffering from Alagille syndrome who died after a low-height fall that resulted in temporal bone fracture and a large epidural hematoma. The article evidences the macroscopical and microscopical characteristics of the syndrome, focusing especially on the skeletal findings that emerged during autopsy. In the case report, distinction is made between a possible accidental or non-accidental nature of the injuries and the characteristics of the injury have been interpreted in the light of the existi

Penetrating injuries of the anterior fontanelle are exceedingly uncommon and are most often associated with inflicted injury. This report of an 11-month-old boy, who fell backward onto a lamp-shade strut that penetrated his anterior fontanelle and left frontal lobe, demonstrates that accidental injuries may also rarely occur. Death was due to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy complicating raised intracranial pressure after a penetrating injury of the brain. Careful evaluation of the death scene with reconstruction incorporating the autopsy findings was required to establish the veracity of the h…

The trials over the deaths of Matthew Eappen and Victoria Climbie have highlighted the importance of forensic evidence in cases of suspected child abuse. The debate as to whether bruises, fractures or head injuries have been sustained as a result of previous trauma or non-accidental injury is central to these, and other, cases. A variety of subjects are encountered in forensic paediatric pathology, including Shaken Baby Syndrome, non-accidental injury, retinal haemorrhage, skeletal injury, Sudden Infant Death, sexual abuse and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. The coverage of these areas on the in

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Delay in seeking medical care is one criterion used to identify victims of abuse. However, typical symptoms of accidental fractures in young children and the time between injury and the seeking of medical care have not been reported. We describe patient and injury characteristics that influence the time from injury to medical care.
METHODS: Parental interviews were conducted for children <6 years old with accidental extremity fractures. Demographic characteristics, signs and symptoms of the injury, and fracture location and severity were described and examined for th

Background: Free fatal falls (FFF) represent a distinct form of blunt force trauma (BFT) that is frequently encountered in forensic practice. Distinguishing FFF injuries from other forms of BFT, such as motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), can pose challenges. Despite its growing usage, the role of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) in diagnosing FFF and its comparison with autopsy remains underexplored. Purpose: This review synthesizes fracture patterns in FFF, examining both extrinsic and intrinsic variables that influence skeletal injuries. It also compares PMCT and autopsy findings to establ

To find out the incidence of accidental exposure to blood borne infections by the operation team in the department of plastic surgery a three month survey was carried out. All episodes of exposure of unprotected skin or mucous membranes to blood were recorded. There were 94 accidents in 746 operations, and 17 (18%) of the injuries penetrated the skin. These were mostly self injuries, typically the surgeon injuring his non-dominant index finger. Only one injured person wanted the patient to have an HIV test after the injury, and none of the injured people wanted an HIV test. Only two reported t

Many inhaled toxins are capable of producing illness; either through direct pulmonary damage or by their systemic toxicity. Occupational exposures and fires are the most common sources of the numerous agents accountable for accidental inhalational injuries. When obvious historical evidence or a heightened suspicion for an acute inhalational exposure does not exist, misdiagnosis and maltreatment are likely to occur. When properly identified, recovery is likely if expedient decontamination and supportive care are provided to the victim. Preventing hypoxemia is central to the treatment of all pul

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Accidental chemical injuries in medical settings are uncommon but can have devastating consequences. Formaldehyde (commonly in the form of formalin solution) is widely used as tissue fixative in clinics and laboratories. If inadvertently introduced into living tissue, formaldehyde causes rapid protein coagulation and tissue fixation, leading to cell death and necrosis. We present a rare case of rectal injury and perforation caused by accidental formaldehyde injection during a prostate biopsy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old male underwent a transrectal prostate b

Although an electric iron will be found in almost every home, injuries from this useful and low-cost device are unexpected. There is little data on electric iron contact burns (non-electrocution) in children and an absolute lack of literature dealing with accidental fatalities from electric irons. This study sets out to describe the causes and patterns of domestic fatalities in females from electric irons.

Air guns are tools which each day become more powerful serious or even fatal accidents are caused by them. We report the clinical case of a 10-year old patient who received an accidental shot puncturing the right auricle, with generation of an important hemopericardium. A favorable evolution followed conservative treatment. However, we want to emphasize the potential gravity of injuries caused by this type of weapon.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of non-accidental trauma (NAT) in children with polytrauma treated at level-I trauma centres (TC).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: Data 6-10% Of children who present at the emergency department with injuries, sustain polytrauma. Polytrauma may result from either accidental (AT) or NAT, i.e. inflicted or neglect. The prevalence of NAT among children with polytrauma is currently unclear.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study that included children (0-18 years) with an Injury Severity Score >15, who presented at one of the 11 Level-I

INTRODUCTION: Non-accidental trauma (NAT) is one of the common causes of injury in children in the United States (US). Abuse and maltreatment affect 2 per 100,000 children annually and may go unrecognized. The aim of this study to quantify the recidivistic nature of NAT in the US pediatric population.
METHODS: The National Readmissions Database (2007-2015) was queried for pediatric (≤18y) trauma patients. Children presenting for non-accidental trauma were further identified. Data was obtained on demographic, clinical, and hospital-level characteristics. Body regions with an Abbreviated Injury
