Gout prevalence in the Hmong: a prime example of health disparity and the role of community-based genetic research.

Individuals of distinct Asian backgrounds are commonly aggregated as Asian, which could mask the differences in the etiology and prevalence of health conditions in the different Asian subgroups. The Hmong are a growing Asian subgroup in the United States with a higher prevalence of gout and gout-related comorbidities than non-Hmong. Genetic explorations in the Hmong suggest a higher prevalence of genetic polymorphisms associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia and gout. History of immigration, acculturation, lifestyle factors, including dietary and social behavioral patterns, and the u…

Treatment experiences of Latinas with current or past binge eating disorder and/or bulimia nervosa.

This study utilized a female sample of 43 Latinas with a history of binge eating disorder and/or bulimia nervosa to investigate disparities … th shame, and cost of treatment as the most influential barriers to seeking or receiving treatment. Acculturation to White dominant society was associated with greater perceived treatment helpfulness. Findings from this study can be used to inform treatments for Latinas in order to potentially increase effectiveness, treatment-seeking, and recovery rates.

Condom use at last sex among unmarried Latino men: an event level analysis.

Information about a specific sexual event can shed light on factors that facilitate or impede condom use. Data were collected by a random digit-dialing telephone survey of unmarried Latino adults in 10 states with large Latino populations. In multivariate analyses, among heterosexually active unmarried Latino men (n = 591), those who reported having a condom available, engaging in a conversation about condoms, having a non-steady, casual partner or a one-time partner, were more likely to use condoms. Men were more likely to use condoms when no other birth control was used or pregnancy was not

Food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington: structural vulnerability, psychosocial factors, and cardiometabolic risk.

INTRODUCTION: Latina women in the United States face overlapping nutritional, social, and cardiometabolic vulnerability, yet how food insecurity, excess weight, and cardiometabolic risk co-occur in underrepresented communities remains insufficiently characterized. We examined food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington as a marker of vulnerability and situated it within a broader context of excess weight, prediabetes risk, and structural and psychosocial disadvantage. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 199 self-identified Latina women recruited through a s

Considering J.Lo and Ugly Betty: a qualitative examination of risk factors and prevention targets for body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and obesity in young Latina women.

Latina women are vulnerable to poor body image, eating disorders, and obesity, particularly during the college years. This study sought to identify common cultural antecedents of these concerns in order to inform the development of prevention programs for this population. Six groups of university students who identified as Latina (N=27) discussed cultural aspects of body image, eating disorders, and obesity. Thematic analysis identified four main themes: (a) cultural disparities in body-ideal, including the influence of the media and acculturation issues; (b) messages about body shape and weig…

METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational design was used with 320 Lickanantay adults (56.3% women; Mage = 40.8). Participants completed validated measures of life satisfaction, cultural involvement, and ethnic identity. Structural equation modeling using weighted least squares maximum li…

Intermittent abdominal pain in a 6-year-old child: the psycho-social-cultural evaluation.

The dramatic surge in diversity in the western world requires a commitment by pediatric providers to understand unique psychosocial presentations of distress, as well as to have an understanding of normative cultural values and health-seeking behaviors. We report a case of apparent recurrent abdominal pain that evolved into a unique culturally salient presentation of obsessive compulsive disorder in a 6-year-old young girl. Access to integrated mental health professionals assisted in the identification of this disorder, if not success in referral and treatment.
