Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is an inherited mechanobullous disorder of skin and mucous membranes. The most striking clinical characteristic of the disease is the formation of blisters following trivial trauma. Repeated cycles of blistering and scarring result in gradual encasement of the hand in an epidermal "cocoon." The authors treated an 11-year-old boy with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa who presented with hand contractures and interdigital pseudosyndactyly. Treatment included release of contractures and application of a biosynthetic dermal analog. This report is

Whilst early debridement and autologous skin grafting remain the cornerstones of treatment for deep burns, there has been a shift towards a more selective and regenerative medicine-oriented approach in the topical management of burn wounds. The most critical issue is whether the wound can achieve epithelialization within approximately 2 to 3 weeks. This timeframe is of clinical significance due to the strong association between delayed epithelialization and hypertrophic scarring, which can result in contractures and functional impairment. However, given that the likelihood of epithelialization

Management of failed first metatarsophalangeal joint implant arthroplasty, especially in the face of infection, is an area of debate without a clear consensus. The purpose of the present report was to explore a new option of reconstructing the joint with an acellular dermal matrix substance in a single case study during a 12-month follow-up period. A staged approach that began with removal of the failed 2-component great toe implant, Koenig(®), excisional debridement of the wound with resection of the necrotic bone (proximal phalanx and distal portion of the first metatarsal bones), and cultur

A 44 years old male patient had suffered extensive 3rd degree burns on both legs, undergoing thorough surgical debridement, resulting in both tibias being exposed. Approximately 5 months after the incident he was referred to the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the University Hospital Gent, Belgium, to undergo flap reconstruction. Free flap surgery was performed twice on both lower legs but failed on all four occasions. In between flap surgery, a dermal substitute (Integra(®)) was applied, attempting to cover the exposed tibias with a layer of soft tissue, but also without s

INTRODUCTION: Penile resurfacing is a complex surgical challenge often employed for scarring and contractures arising from various conditions, including buried penis syndrome, Fournier's gangrene and cancer-related complications. Traditional methods, such as split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs) or free flaps are associated with graft failure, contracture and prolonged recovery, often necessitating multi-stage procedures. Novel approaches are needed to optimise outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, descriptive case series evaluating the use of Matriderm®, a bovine-derived acellular d

PURPOSE: The acellular dermal matrix plays an important role in reinforcing thin mastectomy skin and repositioning the implant in prosthetic breast reconstruction. As the concept of prepectoral plane has become widespread, the role of the acellular dermal matrix has become increasingly important. However, evidences and standards for appropriate thickness and direction during placement remain insufficient. This study is aimed at testing the assumption that differences in the acellular dermal matrix thickness and orientation during placement may affect surgical outcomes including the incidence o

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for head and neck cancer often requires free flap reconstructions, whose harvesting site often requires a thin-skin graft. Wounds from the thin-skin donor site are comparable to an intermediate or deep second-degree burn. This is uncomfortable and can lead to complications such as a long healing time, local infections and pain. Since they are reproducible, these wounds may serve as a model for an objective assessment of new healing medical devices. The acellular fish skin matrix is a new medical device designed to improve healing quality and time.
METHODS: We compared the o

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic ulcers are the most common foot injuries leading to lower-extremity amputation and the most common cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations in the industrialised world. Approximately 85% of all diabetes-related lower-extremity amputations are preceded by foot ulcers. When foot ulcers develop despite preventive measures, early and appropriate treatment should be initiated to help reduce the burden of diabetes-related amputations. Recent advances now offer these patients a regenerative process of restoring the wound with human integument by replacing damaged or miss

Treatment of multiple recession defects with the adjunct use of a connective tissue graft (CTG) represents a challenge when diagnosed in several teeth of the mouth. The amount of CTG harvested from the palate may not be adequate to address this condition. In such scenarios, alternative sources such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM) are preferred due to the unlimited availability. A case report is presented, dealing with the treatment of multiple gingival recessions affecting the majority of dentition using ADM, with a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Success with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) has been widely reported in the osseous reconstruction of large calvarial defects. These efforts have required enormous doses of BMP-2 and are not sufficiently refined to facilitate the detail-oriented repair required for intricate craniofacial structures. We have previously shown that inkjet-based bioprinting technologies allow for precisely customized low-dose protein patterns to induce spatially regulated osteogenesis. Here, we investigate the importance of direct contact between bioprinted BMP-2 and the dura mater (a source of o
