Achievement Gap in Reading Is Present as Early as First Grade and Persists through Adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if differences between dyslexic and typical readers in their reading scores and verbal IQ are evident as early as f … differences already present in first grade between typical and dyslexic readers. CONCLUSIONS: The achievement gap between typical and dyslexic readers is evident as early as first grade, and this gap persists into adolescence. These findings provide strong evidence and impetus for early identification of and intervention for young children at risk for dysle …

Association Between Transient Newborn Hypoglycemia and Fourth-Grade Achievement Test Proficiency: A Population-Based Study.

IMPORTANCE: Prolonged neonatal hypoglycemia is associated with poor long-term neurocognitive function. However, little is known about an association between early transient newborn hypoglycemia and academic achievement. OBJECTIVE: To determine if early (within the first 3 hours of life) transient hypoglycemia (a single initial low glucose concentration, followed by a second value above a cutoff) is associated with subsequent poor academic performance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective population-based cohort study of all infants born between January 1, 1998, and December 31,…

Achievement of gross motor milestones in children with idiopathic clubfoot treated with the Ponseti method.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method of idiopathic clubfoot treatment involves a series of weekly casts, a percutaneous Achilles tenotomy if needed, followed by wearing a foot abduction orthosis (FAO). Gross motor development of children with idiopathic clubfoot has not been examined. The purposes of this study were to determine the ages of achievement of gross motor milestones in children with clubfoot treated with Ponseti method and to compare those ages with historical normative developmental data. METHODS: In this prospective study, 51 children with idiopathic clubfoot who had their first cast …

Malaria with neurological involvement in Ugandan children: effect on cognitive ability, academic achievement and behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a leading cause of ill health and neuro-disability in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Impaired cognition is a common outcome of malaria with neurological involvement. There is also a possibility that academic achievement may be affected by malaria with neurological involvement given the association between cognitive ability and academic achievement. This study investigated the effect of malaria with neurological involvement on cognitive ability, behaviour and academic achievement. METHODS: This prospective case-control study was carried out in Kampala City, Uganda betwe…

A meta-analysis of morphological interventions: effects on literacy achievement of children with literacy difficulties.

This study synthesizes 79 standardized mean-change differences between control and treatment groups from 17 independent studies, investigating the effect of morphological interventions on literacy outcomes for students with literacy difficulties. Average total sample size ranged from 15 to 261 from a wide range of grade levels. Overall, morphological instruction showed a significant improvement on literacy achievement (d = 0.33). Specifically, its effect was significant on several literacy outcomes such as phonological awareness (d = 0.49), morphological awareness (d = 0.40), vocabulary (d = 0…

Experiences of violence and deficits in academic achievement among urban primary school children in Jamaica.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between children's experiences of three different types of violence and academic achievement among primary school children in Kingston, Jamaica. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1300 children in grade 5 [mean (S.D.) age: 11 (0.5) years] from 29 government primary schools in urban areas of Kingston and St. Andrew, Jamaica, was conducted. Academic achievement (mathematics, reading, and spelling) was assessed using the Wide Range Achievement Test. Children's experiences of three types of violence - exposure to aggression among p…

Achievement of long-term local control in patients with craniopharyngiomas using high precision stereotactic radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The long-term outcome in patients with craniopharyngiomas treated with fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) was evaluated. METHODS: A total of 40 patients with craniopharyngiomas were treated between May 1989 and July 2006 with FSRT. Most patients were treated for tumor progression after surgery. A median target dose of 52.2 grays (Gy) (range, 50.4-56 Gy) was applied in a median conventional fractionation of 5 x 1.8 Gy per week. Follow-up examinations included thorough clinical assessment as well as contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scans. RESULTS: After a med

Consequences and risks of <1000-g birth weight for neuropsychological skills, achievement, and adaptive functioning.

A cohort of 219 children with extremely low birth weight (<1000 g, extremely low birth weight [ELBW]) born from 1992 to 1995 was followed to mean age 8 years to evaluate outcomes and identify risk factors. We compared 204 of these children with 176 term-born normal birth weight (NBW) controls on neuropsychological skills, academic achievement, and adaptive behavior. The ELBW group had worse outcomes than the NBW on all measures. Within the ELBW group, lower scores on NEPSY tests of executive function and memory were related to <750 g birth weight, B (SE) = -0.93 (0.36), p =.010; cranial ultras…

Achievement of second parenthood in an ART programme using frozen donor semen: cohort follow-up.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to determine the efficacy of a programme using frozen donor semen in a cohort of patients returning for treatment after previously conceiving through donor insemination (DI). METHODS: The cohort included 222 couples with secondary infertility (previous live birth) in one University Hospital Centre. The treatment sequence involved DI cycles until completion. Live births, drop-out for personal or medical reasons and recourse to IVF with donor semen (IVF-D) were recorded for all patients. Live births were expressed as both rate per cycle and crude cumulative r

Characteristics of children referred for evaluation of school difficulties who have adequate academic achievement scores.

Forty children (7 to 11 years old) referred for evaluation of learning problems, who had scores within the normal range on standardized measures of academic achievement, were compared to 81 similarly referred children who had scored low (< 90) on at least one measure of academic achievement. We tested the hypothesis that children with normal achievement scores who are referred for evaluation of learning problems show neuropsychological profiles comparable to those of children with low achievement. Referral problems, school history, IQ, academic achievement, and neuropsychological function were…

Spelling errors of normal and disabled students on achievement levels one through four: Instructional implications.

The errors of 72 disabled and 90 normal spellers were compared on the first through fourth levels of achievement using a featural system based on developmental spelling research. The mean age of the disabled subjects was two to three years higher on all levels (the differences were significant) but, of 24 error features on the four levels, F-tests showed that the groups differed only on Front Vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/), particularly the combination of in as in chin, with the normal group making more errors. Discriminant function analysis showed that the error features which significantly discrimin…

Field epidemiology training in Tunisia: achievements and gaps.

INTRODUCTION: National health security depends on a trained field epidemiology workforce. This study evaluates the Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program (T-FETP) from its launch in 2018 through 2024, with a focus on workforce capacity, geographic coverage, and structural barriers to program sustainability. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional analysis of the national T-FETP graduate roster. Territorial coverage was assessed against the international benchmark of one Intermediate-level FETP graduate per 200,000 inhabitants. Density and capacity gaps were analyzed for each

Achievable Benchmarks of Care in Pediatric Emergency Departments.

IMPORTANCE: Achievable benchmarks of care (ABCs) are a process by which performance is anchored on a select high-achieving group. ABCs can motivate systemic quality improvement toward realistically achievable goals. The establishment of multisite ABCs in pediatric emergency medicine has been limited. OBJECTIVE: To report ABCs for pediatric emergency care management (encounters with asthma, infections, or pain), readiness (vital measurement, timeliness, and throughput), and quality (return visits). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed visits at 12 emergency d

Achieving balance in upper limb spasticity management.

INTRODUCTION: Upper limb spasticity can result from a variety of insults to the central nervous system. Disruption of the closely regulated spinal reflex arc, owing to loss of brain inhibition, results in an imbalance between antagonist and agonist muscle groups, leading to a loss of fluid coordination of motion across joints.Management strategies:A detailed, individualized assessment of each patient is mandatory in a multidisciplinary setting. Although there are objective parameters which guide treatment, variation and customization of strategies are needed for each patient, including definin

Islet ultrastructure: past achievements and future directions.

Islets of Langerhans constitute the endocrine component of the pancreas and comprise the main cell types responsible for the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Beta cells produce and secrete insulin, the principal hormone capable of lowering blood glucose. However, the interplay of beta cells with other endocrine cell types, such as alpha cells and delta cells, is critical for proper blood glucose regulation. The failure of beta cells to produce sufficient amounts of insulin leads to diabetes, a major metabolic disease. Since their discovery by Paul Langerhans using a simple light microscope i
