Pathogenic Fungal Sensing and Responses to Stressful Host Environments.

Despite the ubiquity of fungi in nature, only a small fraction are pathogenic to humans, and the majority of these fungi are opportunistic and affect immunocompromised individuals. In general, pathogen emergence is restricted by the ability of fungi to sense and withstand human host environmental cues and stresses. These stress responses in fungi involve immediate survival reactions as well as long-term adaptations. Additionally, some opportunistic pathogenic behavior suggests that virulence traits evolved for environmental survival, a concept known as exaptation. This review covers recent adv

Morphological adaptation to environmental stress in small ruminants from the sahelian zones of Niger and potential associations with carcass yield.

This study analyses, in the Sahelian zone of Niger, the morphological traits of sheep and goats' responses to environmental stress and the contribution of adaptive traits to herd productivity. The study utilized 2490 adult small ruminants, including 653 red and Sahelian goats and 1837 Peulh (with three varieties: Balami, Oudah and Bali-Bali) and Tuareg (Ara-ara) sheep from 13 sites with a marked aridity gradient within the country's northern latitude. Carcass yield was assessed on a second sample of 1617 adult animals, comprising 876 sheep and 741 goats. Variations in thorax auricular index (r

Stress Adaptation and the Brainstem with Focus on Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone.

Stress adaptation is of utmost importance for the maintenance of homeostasis and, therefore, of life itself. The prevalence of stress-related disorders is increasing, emphasizing the importance of exploratory research on stress adaptation. Two major regulatory pathways exist: the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and the sympathetic adrenomedullary axis. They act in unison, ensured by the enormous bidirectional connection between their centers, the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), and the brainstem monoaminergic cell groups, respectively. PVN and especially their cor

Comparison of the capture efficiency, prey processing, and nutrient extraction in a generalist and a specialist spider predator.

Predators are traditionally classified as generalists and specialists based on the presence of adaptations that increase efficiency of prey capture and consumption and selection of particular prey types. Nevertheless, empirical evidence comparing foraging efficiency between generalist and specialist carnivores is scarce. We compared the prey-capture and feeding efficiency in a generalist and a specialist (araneophagous) spider predator. By using two related species, the generalist Harpactea rubicunda (Dysderidae) and the specialist Nops cf. variabilis (Caponiidae), we evaluated their fundament

Proteomic and comparative genomic analysis reveals adaptability of Brassica napus to phosphorus-deficient stress.

UNLABELLED: Given low solubility and immobility in many soils of the world, phosphorus (P) may be the most widely studied macronutrient for plants. In an attempt to gain an insight into the adaptability of Brassica napus to P deficiency, proteome alterations of roots and leaves in two B. napus contrasting genotypes, P-efficient 'Eyou Changjia' and P-inefficient 'B104-2', under long-term low P stress and short-term P-free starvation conditions were investigated, and proteomic combined with comparative genomic analyses were conducted to interpret the interrelation of differential abundance prote

Evidence for cross-tolerance to nutrient deficiency in three disjunct populations of Arabidopsis lyrata ssp. lyrata in response to substrate calcium to magnesium ratio.

Species with widespread distributions that grow in varied habitats may consist of ecotypes adapted to a particular habitat, or may exhibit cross-tolerance that enables them to exploit a variety of habitats. Populations of Arabidopsis lyrata ssp. lyrata (L.) O'Kane & Al-Shehbaz grow in a wide variety of edaphic settings including serpentine soil, limestone sand, and alluvial flood plains. While all three of these environments share some stressors, a crucial difference among these environments is soil calcium to magnesium ratio, which ranges from 25:1 in the limestone sand to 0.2:1 in serpentine

Isoprenoids: an evolutionary pool for photoprotection.

Plants have evolved several mechanisms for getting rid of excess energy in photosynthetic membranes, some of which involve isoprenoid compounds. In all photosynthetic organisms, the carotenoids beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, and tocopherols serve an important photoprotective role, either by dissipating excess excitation energy as heat or by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and suppressing lipid peroxidation. Isoprene and some monoterpenes, diterpenes and other carotenoids also occur in some plant lineages. Compelling evidence indicates that these non-ubiquitous isoprenoids might be part

Ecophysiology and nutritional niche of the bilby (Macrotis lagotis), an omnivorous marsupial from inland Australia: a review.

The bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a small omnivorous marsupial that was once widespread but is now restricted to the most arid margins of its former range. It feeds on a mixture of invertebrates (mainly ants and termites) and plant material (mainly seeds and bulbs), most of which is below ground. Measurements of the energy and water requirements of free-living bilbies and of the maintenance nitrogen requirements of captive animals provided the basis for an explanation for its continued survival in the Australian arid zone. Measurements of the mean retention times of inert markers for the solute

[Use of the psychophysiological complex PFK-01 in patients after replantation of the segment of the upper extremity].

The use of the psychophysiological complex PFK-01 permits the psychoemotional status to be examined in patients who underwent replantation of a segment of the upper limb after traumatic amputation. The method makes it possible to establish what kind of the psychic stage, tension or depression, is experienced by the examined patient. The data obtained can be used by the treating physician or by the psychotherapist in a complex of rehabilitation measures for goal-oriented psychotherapeutic correction of patients.

Comparison of the Planas Functional Masticatory Angle Across Deciduous, Mixed, and Permanent Dentition Stages: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

Background. The Planas Functional Masticatory Angle [PFMA] is a functional parameter describing mandibular trajectory during mastication. Its variation across dentition stages may reflect cross-sectional physiological functional adaptation during growth. Methods. A cross-sectional pilot study recruited 30 patients [10 per group: deciduous, mixed, permanent dentition] from a university dental clinic. PFMA was measured using a standardized intraoral photographic protocol, with intra-examiner reliability assessed [ICC > 0.9]. Molar relationships were classified per Angle's classification. PFMA di

Special Article - Exercise-induced right ventricular injury or arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM): The bright side and the dark side of the moon.

There is still debate on the range of normal physiologic changes of the right ventricle or ventricular (RV) function in athletes. Genetic links to arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) are well-established. There is no current consensus on the importance of extensive exercise and exercise-induced injury to the RV. During the intensive exercise of endurance sports, the cardiac structures adapt to athletic load over time. Some athletes develop RV cardiomyopathy possibly caused by genetic predisposition, whilst others develop arrhythmias from the RV. Endurance sports lead to increased volume and pr

[Seeing in the dusk: physiological basis and investigation].

Dark adaptation and seeing in the dusk require a complex interaction of the cone and rod system. Whereas the former provides high temporal resolution and colour vision in daylight, temporal resolution of the latter is smaller but sensitivity higher by a factor of 100 to 1,000. The two operational ranges overlap by several decades. Characteristic symptoms of disease may be derived from the systems' physiological function and should be enquired about specifically. Problems due to opacity of the optic media or reduced visual acuity should be differentiated from night vision disorders in the more

Strain-conditioned spatial gene expression in female mouse bone under physiological and non-physiological strain distribution.

Osteoporosis, the most common bone metabolic disease, impairs the ability of bone to sense and adapt to mechanical stimuli. Mechanical strain distribution plays a crucial role in bone adaptation, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying differential remodeling responses to distinct strain conditions remain unclear. To address this, we compared mouse tibiae subjected to axial compressive (physiological strain distribution) or medial-lateral (non-physiological strain distribution) loading. Strain distributions were calculated by finite element analysis and validated by strain gauge measurements,

Virus transmission required for maintenance and host adaptation mirrors neurophysiological differences in rabies-derived peptides.

Pathogen adaptations to new hosts are central to the disease ecology of cross-species transmission and host switching of viruses. The rabies virus is a model for adaptations to different hosts as it induces behavioral changes that facilitate transmission, while being maintained in distinct species-specific cycles of infection. Here, we demonstrate that the rabies virus requires distinct transmission dynamics in two hosts with different ecologies to establish maintenance, using agent-based modeling, analyses of virus glycoprotein-mediated manipulation of neuroreceptor function, and phylogenetic

The Maternal Adaptation Framework: A Conceptual Model of Adaptive Processes Across Pregnancy and the Great Obstetrical Syndromes.

The Great Obstetrical Syndromes (ie, preeclampsia and preterm labor) remain major contributors to maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality and are increasingly understood to involve complex, interacting pathways influenced by biological and contextual factors, rather than a single causal mechanism. A literature review revealed a lack of theoretical models capturing the multidimensional nature of pregnancy-related adaptation. Accordingly, theory-derivation methods were used to develop the Maternal Adaptation Framework as a domain-specific extension of the Roy Adaptation Model. The framework integ

Ultramarathon is an outstanding model for the study of adaptive responses to extreme load and stress.

Ultramarathons comprise any sporting event involving running longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 km (26.2 miles). Studies on ultramarathon participants can investigate the acute consequences of ultra-endurance exercise on inflammation and cardiovascular or renal consequences, as well as endocrine/energetic aspects, and examine the tissue recovery process over several days of extreme physical load. In a study published in BMC Medicine, Schütz et al. followed 44 ultramarathon runners over 4,487 km from South Italy to North Cape, Norway (the Trans Europe Foot Race 2009) and reco

Generation of Mammalian Host-Adapted Borrelia burgdorferi by Cultivation in Peritoneal Dialysis Membrane Chamber Implantation in Rats.

The transmission, survival, and virulence of Borrelia burgdorferi depend upon the spirochete's ability to modulate its transcriptome as it cycles between its arthropod vector and reservoir host. This complex adaptive process is collectively referred to as "host-adaptation." The paucibacillary nature of borrelial infections precludes the detailed analysis of host adaptation within infected mammalian tissues. To circumvent this limitation, we (J Clin Invest 101:2240-2250, 1998) developed a model system whereby spirochetes are cultivated within dialysis membrane chambers (DMCs) surgically implant

Formation of Adaptive Defense to Low Temperatures in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The effects of repeated cold stress on physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic processes was studied in Arabidopsis thaliana. An experiment included stages of initial chilling, acclimation, and repeated cold treatment. Repeated cold stress increased electrolyte leakage and decreased the chlorophyll a content, indicating a disruption of the membrane integrity and a restructuring of the photosynthetic apparatus. Expression analysis showed upregulation of the DREB1A, MYC2, COR15A, and COR15B genes, which are associated with the cold response and stress memory formation. Transcription of the

Cultivation of Leptospira interrogans Within Rat Peritoneal Dialysis Membrane Chambers.

In order to sustain its zoonotic lifecycle, leptospires must adapt to growth within the host milieu. Signals encountered within the mammal also trigger regulatory programs required by Leptospira for the expression of virulence-related gene products. The complex transcriptional, antigenic, and physiological changes leptospires undergo within the mammal are collectively referred to as "host adaptation." In this chapter, we describe the procedures for the generation of host-adapted Leptospira spp. by cultivation within dialysis membrane chambers (DMCs) implanted in rat peritoneal cavities. In thi
