Cytoenzymologic activities of some oxidroeductases and alkaline phosphatase of leucocytes in Basedow, Cushing and Addison diseases.

Leukocytes, approached by histoenzymological methods for demonstration of dihydrofolate dehydrogenase, NADH2-diaphorase, lactate dehydrogenase and alcaline phosphatase activities, provided information about the impaired metabolic balance of thyrotoxicosis, Cushing and Addison diseases. The most relevant variations were found in thyrotoxicosis, the most sensitive enzyme was dihydrofolate dehydrogenase and the less sensitive was alcaline phosphatase. The neutrophils and lymphocytes had more evident enzymic variations.

Anti-adrenal cellular hypersensitivity in Addison's disease. II. Correlation with clinical and serological findings.

Previous observations suggesting the existence in idiopathic Addison's disease of a state of anti-adrenal cellular hypersensitivity is extended to a larger material comprising thirty cases of idiopathic Addison's disease and seven cases of tuberculous Addison's disease. The specific anti-adrenal humoral and cellular hypersensitivity is evaluated by means of the indirect immunofluorescence technique and the leucocyte migration test, respectively. Anti-adrenal cellular hypersensitivity was demonstrable in 46% of patients with idiopathic Addison's disease but in no case of Addison's disease of un

A DESCRIPTION OF ADDISON'S DISEASE, AND ITS NEUROPSYCHIATRIC MANIFESTATIONS COMPARING THE DISEASE AS IT IS NOW TO THE DISEASE AS EXPERIENCED BY SAINT ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY IN 1906.

We describe Addison's disease, which is the disease caused by Adrenal Gland Insufficiency. Addison's disease is an uncommon endocrine disorder characterised by inadequate production of hormones, predominantly aldosterone and cortisol, by the adrenal glands. This condition occurs due to damage to the adrenal cortex, the region responsible for hormone synthesis. Clinical manifestations of Addison's disease are often insidious and nonspecific, including symptoms such as myasthenia, persistent fatigue, unintentional weight loss, hypotension, and hyperpigmentation of the skin, especially in areas s

MANAGEMENT OF ENDOCRINE DISEASE Disease burden and treatment challenges in patients with both Addison's disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Concurrent type 1 diabetes (T1D) and Addison's disease (AD) is a rare combination of diseases and, in approximately one third of these patients, it is also combined with an autoimmune thyroid disease. Recently, it was shown that patients with both T1D and AD have a higher risk of premature death compared to patients with T1D alone, the most common causes of death being due to diabetic complications and cardiovascular disease. These patients receiving replacement therapies with both insulin and glucocorticoids face an increased risk of hypo- and hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis and have

Addison's disease due to adrenal insufficiency in an immunocompetent patient with disseminated cryptococcosis. Case report.

Systemic mycoses, such as cryptococcosis, mainly affect the lungs and central nervous system; however, involvement of other organs, such as the adrenal glands, is rare. This has been described in some cases of primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) of fungal origin, which are associated with high mortality. We present the case of a 65-year-old immunocompetent man who presented clinical manifestations of adrenal insufficiency. Biochemical tests confirmed PAI, and abdominal tomography revealed hyperplasia of both adrenal glands, predominantly on the left side. Left adrenalectomy was performed, and

Addison's disease in patients with autoimmune primary ovarian insufficiency: a concise guide for gynecologists and obstetricians.

Addison's disease (AD) is a rare condition, but its prevalence in Europe has been steadily rising. Its initial presentation might be a life-threatening event termed adrenal crisis (AC), which is particularly likely to happen during situations of increased biological stress, such as septic illness, general anesthesia, surgery, or trauma.Addison's disease can appear as an isolated clinical entity or together with other autoimmune conditions, such as autoimmune thyroiditis, pernicious anemia, or autoimmune primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). In this review, we underline the relationship between

Newly diagnosed autoimmune Addison's disease in a patient with COVID-19 with autoimmune disseminated encephalomyelitis.

A man in his 20s with a history of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) was brought into the emergency department (ED) after his family found him at home collapsed on the floor unresponsive with a blood glucose of 28 mg/dL at the field. In the ED, the patient was tachycardic, tachypnoeic and hypotensive, requiring pressors and intubation at 9 hours and 12 hours after arrival, respectively. Laboratory results revealed a positive COVID-19 test, serum sodium of 125 mmol/L and persistent hypoglycaemia. The patient was given a high dose of dexamethasone for COVID-19 treatment 1 hour before p

Vitamin D status and pathway genes in five European autoimmune Addison's disease cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: While vitamin D regulates immune cells, little is known about it in autoimmune Addison's disease (AAD). We investigated the vitamin D status in AAD patients from five European populations to assess its deficiency. In addition, we studied two case-control cohorts for vitamin D metabolism and pathway genes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 1028 patients with AAD from Germany (n = 239), Italy (n = 328), Norway (n = 378), UK (n = 44) and Poland (n = 39) and 679 controls from Germany (n = 301) and Norway (n = 378) were studied for 25(OH)D3 (primary objective). Seconda

Vitamin D status and its associations with clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with Addison's disease.

INTRODUCTION: There is increasing evidence that several autoimmune diseases, as well as their activity, are associated with vitamin D (VD) deficiency. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of VD insufficiency in patients with Addison's disease (AD), as well as to evaluate associations between VD concentrations and various clinical and laboratory parameters of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed medical records of 31 adult patients diagnosed with autoimmune Addison's disease, in whom serum VD was measured. We assessed correlations between serum VD and various c

Galactosaemia occurring in association with primary ovarian insufficiency, Addison's disease and chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Classic galactosaemia is the most severe type, inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion and normally detected on newborn screening. It is caused by an inability to digest galactose due to a deficiency of galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT), resulting in an intolerance of feeds in the neonatal period, failure to thrive, hypoglycaemia, jaundice, cataracts, hepatomegaly, vomiting, diarrhoea, developmental delay and an increased risk of Escherichia coli sepsis. The long-term sequelae of this disorder include cognitive impairment, neurological symptoms, such as ataxia, nutritional def

Type II polyglandular autoimmune syndrome: a case of Addison's disease precipitated by use of levothyroxine.

A 46-year-old woman was referred to the endocrinology clinic for evaluation of progressive fatigue, dizziness and treatment-resistant hypothyroidism. Initial laboratory results revealed hypothyroidism, hyponatraemia and hyperkalaemia. Liothyronine sodium (Cytomel) was initiated, which exacerbated her fatigue and dizziness. Suspecting adrenal insufficiency, an 08:00 cortisol level was obtained and found to be low with failure to increase following cosyntropin stimulation test. Diagnosis of primary adrenal insufficiency was confirmed via CT abdomen and pelvis revealing diminutive adrenal glands

Effect of steroid replacement on thyroid function and thyroid autoimmunity in Addison's disease with primary hypothyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Steroid replacement without thyroxine supplementation normalizes thyroid function test (TFT) in some but not all Addison's disease patients with primary hypothyroidism. Both autoimmune and nonautoimmune mechanisms contribute to this improvement in TFT. However, the documentation of the change in thyroid autoimmunity after cortisol replacement is very limited in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of steroid replacement on TFT and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (anti-TPO-Ab) titer in Addison's disease with primary hypothyroidism. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Autoantibody response against NALP5/MATER in primary ovarian insufficiency and in autoimmune Addison's disease.

CONTEXT: NACHT leucine-rich-repeat protein 5 (NALP5)/maternal antigen that embryo requires (MATER) is an autoantigen in hypoparathyroidism associated with autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS1) but is also expressed in the ovary. Mater is an autoantigen in experimental autoimmune oophoritis. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to determine the frequency of NALP5/MATER autoantibodies (NALP5/MATER-Ab) in women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and in patients with autoimmune Addison's disease (AAD) and to evaluate whether inhibin chains are a target for autoantibodies

COEXISTENCE OF ADDISON'S DISEASE AND PERNICIOUS ANEMIA: IS THE NEW CLASSIFICATION OF AUTOIMMUNE POLYGLANDULAR SYNDROME APPROPRIATE?

A case of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) is presented. A 45-year-old man was admitted due to fatigue, malaise and inappetence. He had a history of primary hypothyroidism and was on levothyroxine substitution therapy. One year before, he was diagnosed with normocytic anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency, which was treated with vitamin B12 substitution therapy. Physical examination revealed hypotension and marked hyperpigmentation. Laboratory testing showed hyponatremia, hyperkaliemia and severe normocytic anemia. Endocrinological evaluation disclosed low morning cortisol and increased adr

Primary Adrenal Insufficiency (Addison's Disease) Associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Rare Occurrence.

Coexistence of Addison's disease and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a rare occurrence with only few reported cases in the literature. We describe a 29-year-old woman who presented to us with clinical features of acute Addisonian crisis and SLE. Laboratory investigations were confirmatory of Addison's disease in a background of SLE. The patient made remarkable improvement on administration of steroids as replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency and treatment of SLE. Clinicians need to have a high-index of suspicion of this possible coexistence in order to avoid the associated delete

Acquired perforating dermatosis and Addison's disease due to disseminated histoplasmosis: Presentation and clinical outcomes.

Acquired perforating dermatosis (APD) is a rare disorder characterized by transepidermal elimination of contents from dermis with minimal disruption of surrounding structures, believed to be due to altered expression of dermal proteins. Its occurrence in patients with systemic mycosis has never been reported. We report a 60-y gentleman who presented with features of adrenal insufficiency (nausea vomiting, hypotension and increased pigmentation) for 4 mo, multiple hyperpigmented pruritic nodules with central keratinous plug over extensor surface of both lower limbs along with hepatosplenomegaly

Prolonged Dyspnea after Interscalene Block: Attributed to Undiagnosed Addison's Disease and Myasthenia Gravis.

This report describes a patient who had a series of daily interscalene nerve blocks to treat pain following a shoulder manipulation for postsurgical stiffness. She experienced acute respiratory compromise that persisted for many weeks. All typical and unusual causes of these symptoms were ruled out. Her treating pulmonologist theorized that the ipsilateral carotid body had been injured. However, it was subsequently determined that the constellation of symptoms and their prolonged duration were best explained by a poor stress response from Addison's disease coupled with exacerbation of early on
