Adrenocortical Oncocytic Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Histopathologic Diagnostic Criteria.

Oncocytic tumors are rare in the adrenal gland. The histopathological diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma is difficult due to the lack of precise diagnostic criteria for malignancy. A 44-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with left flank pain. Radiologically an adrenal mass was detected. After the excision and histopathologic evaluation of the mass, a diagnosis of adrenocortical oncocytic carcinoma was made. At least one of the features of more than 5 mitoses in 50 high power fields, atypical mitotic figures or venous invasion is required for the diagnosis of malignancy in adrenocorti

A case of incidental adrenocortical oncocytoma.

BACKGROUND: A 39-year-old female presented with an incidentally discovered left adrenal mass. She denied any history of hypertension, headaches, palpitations, muscle weakness, bruising easily, or fatigue. Physical examination was unremarkable. INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, laboratory analyses, CT scan and MRI. DIAGNOSIS: Oncocytic adrenocortical tumor, or adrenal oncocytoma. MANAGEMENT: Adrenalectomy, gross and histopathologic examination, and follow-up radiologic imaging.

[Deoxycorticosterone-producing adrenocortical carcinoma--a case report].

A 39-year-old male presented with gross hematuria and left lower abdominal discomfort. Excretory urography showed a left ureteral stone and hydronephrosis. CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging showed a solid mass at the upper pole of the left kidney. Angiography revealed a hypervascular lesion at this area. The laboratory data showed a slightly decreased serum potassium level. In the endocrinological study, the serum deoxycorticosterone (DOC) level was markedly elevated. There was, however, no evidence of hypertension. The operation was performed on November 13, 1992. The tumor was almost s

Rare Tumors: Part Two.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) are rare tumors that can be seen in pediatric and adolescent patients. Both are associated with underlying cancer predisposition syndromes, most commonly Li-Fraumeni syndrome for ACC and familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch syndrome for CRC. The mainstay of treatment for these diseases is surgical resection, with chemotherapy and other targeted therapies being used for advanced disease. Pediatric CRC and ACC have distinct molecular characteristics from those of their adult counterparts, and should be managed at specialized centers

Cutaneous adrenal cortical carcinoma metastasis in a 6 year-old boy.

We report the case of a six year-old boy with a history of adrenal cortical carcinoma presenting with cutaneous metastasis. Due to the low incidence of cutaneous metastasis arising from adrenal cortical carcinoma, its diagnosis can be challenging based solely on histological analysis. Yet, the clinical history in combination with an immunohistochemical panel consisting of melan-A, alpha inhibin, D11, caretinin, neuron specific enolase, synatophysin, and chromogranin, can be useful in differentiating it from other tumors with similar cytomorphology.

Pre-Cushing's syndrome: a case report.

A 67-year-old man affected by prostate cancer was incidentally found to have a nodular enlargement of the left adrenal gland without apparent changes in hormonal status. The adrenal mass was found to be scintigraphically active, the radiolabelled compound being concentrated in its context with a consensual suppression of the contralateral uptake. The patient underwent a resection of the adrenal tumor. Histologically and biochemically, the adrenal mass was found to be a non-functioning adenoma. The radioisotopic uptake along with the non-hormonal activity prompted us to call this tumor "Pre-Cus

Breast carcinoma metastasizing to an adrenocortical adenoma: a case of tumour-to-tumour metastasis.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM) refers to a malignant tumor metastasizing to a second, distict tumor. It is a rare phenomenon and the most common donor organs are the lung and breast. Here in, we report a case of TTM metastasis of breast carcinoma metastasizing to an adrenocortical adenoma (ACA) in a 40-year-old woman. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which TTM of breast carcinoma metastasizes to an ACA.

Disappearance of recurrent thymic epithelial tumor following corticosteroid and cyclosporine treatment: A case report.

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are considered orphan neoplasms, and treatment options for recurrent or metastatic stages are limited. Here, we have reported a case of recurrent TET that showed complete remission after receiving high-dose corticosteroids followed by low-dose corticosteroids and cyclosporine. No recurrence was observed for the next 2 years. The effects of corticosteroids on the TET and the associated pure red cell aplasia led to adjustment of the diagnosis from thymic carcinoma to thymoma. Low-dose corticosteroids and cyclosporine might be the reason for remission maintenance.

Hirsutism of adrenal origin in adolescents: consequences in adults.

Hirsutism is a common clinical and psychological problem in women. Polycystic ovary syndrome and idiopathic hirsutism are the most common causes of hirsutism. Adrenal disorders are less common causes of hirsutism; the most common adrenal cause of hirsutism is non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NC-CAH). Hirsutism may be the presenting symptom of an adrenal carcinoma or adenoma. In this review, adrenal causes of hirsutism, the pathophysiology of the hirsutism in NC-CAH, and the treatment of hirsutism in these patients, are discussed.
