Parental verbal affection and verbal aggression in childhood differentially influence psychiatric symptoms and wellbeing in young adulthood.

Previous research has shown that exposure to parental verbal aggression is common and associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, dissociation, and drug use. A key question that has not been addressed is whether verbal affection from the same or opposite parent can attenuate the effects of verbal aggression. This cross-sectional study examined the effects of parental verbal aggression and affection during childhood on measures of psychopathology and wellbeing in a community sample of 2,518 individuals (18-25 years). Data were analyzed for moderating influences using mixed effect m

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met and adulthood chronic stress interact to affect depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: BDNF Val66Met by chronic stress interaction has been studied using childhood stress as a moderator, but has not been widely studied using chronic stress in adulthood. METHODS: Two independent samples were used: Duke-CG (238 Caucasians) and MESA (5524 Caucasians, African Americans and Hispanics). Chronic stress in Duke-CG was operationalized as having primary caregiving responsibility for a spouse or relative with diagnosed Alzheimer's disease or other major dementia; chronic stress in MESA was defined using chronic burden score constructed from self-reported problems of health (se

Establishment of a temporomandibular physiological state with neuromuscular orthosis treatment affects reduction of TMD symptoms in 313 patients.

The objective of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that alteration of the occlusions of patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders (TMD) to one that is neuromuscularly, rather than anatomically based, would result in reduction or resolution of symptoms that characterize the TMD condition. This hypothesis was proven correct in the present study, where 313 patients with TMD symptoms were examined for neuromuscular dysfunction, using several electronic instruments before and after treatment intervention. Such instrumentation enabled electromyographic (EMG) measurement of the

Positive and negative symptoms in affected sib pairs with schizophrenia: implications for genetic studies in an African Xhosa sample.

Careful phenotyping and the identification of subtypes of schizophrenia can contribute significantly to the success of genetic studies in schizophrenia. The phenomenology of schizophrenia in affected sib pairs has been well-described in Caucasian populations, however a paucity of data exists for African populations. This study therefore investigated symptom dimensions in a sizeable group of affected Xhosa sib pairs as a means of evaluating the role of shared familial factors in the psychosis of schizophrenia. Five hundred and thirteen participants were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview

Obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions in affected sibling pairs diagnosed with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an etiologically heterogeneous disorder. Recent factor analyses have consistently identified several symptom dimensions, two of which are associated with increased familial risk for OCD; aggressive, sexual, and religious obsessions and checking compulsions (FACTOR 1) and symmetry and ordering obsessions and compulsions (FACTOR 2). Both of these symptom dimensions are also frequently seen in association with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). The purpose of this study was to determine whether these obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions are correl

Intranasal beclomethasone reduces allergen-induced symptoms and superficial mucosal eosinophilia without affecting submucosal inflammation.

Previous investigations have suggested that nasal secretions, obtained by lavage or scraping, and the nasal submucosa, sampled by biopsy, are two distinct compartments. We investigated the effect of intranasal corticosteroids on antigen-induced eosinophil influx into both compartments. We performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 15 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Beclomethasone dipropionate, 84 microg twice a day, was delivered to one nostril while the other nostril received placebo for 1 wk. Subjects were then challenged with grass or ragweed extracts on each inferior t

How dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, and overlapping symptoms affect quality of life, use of health care, and medication - a long-term population based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (GERS) and dyspepsia is high. Overlapping of GERS and dyspepsia has been described to affect quality of life. However, studies are few. This long-term population-based study evaluates how GERS, dyspepsia, and overlapping symptoms, affect quality of life, and the use of health care and medication. METHODS: This study presents data for the control group of the randomised population study, HEP-FYN. At baseline 10,000 individuals, aged 40-65 years, received questionnaires at baseline and after 1, 5 and 13 years. The questionna

The Impact of Personalized Dietary Interventions on Symptom Severity and Dietary Habits in Female Patients with Affective Disorders: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid advances in nutritional psychiatry highlight the central role of the gut-brain axis in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. Despite strong theoretical evidence linking poor dietary habits and dysbiosis to increased subclinical inflammation, standardized nutritional assessments and personalized dietary care are rarely implemented in routine clinical practice for patients with affective disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective was to perform a prospective evaluation of the impact of personalized dietary and educational interventions on the severity of depressive, anxiety

Dampening of positive affect partially accounts for the association between women's history of child maltreatment and current depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment exerts lasting effects on emotion regulation, which in turn accounts for adult's risk for psychopathology such as depression. In this vulnerable population, deficits in emotion regulation of negative affect are well established and include reliance on emotional suppression and rumination strategies. In contrast, alterations in the regulation of positive affect associated with child maltreatment history are less understood. We examined the role of positive rumination and dampening of positive affect, two emotion regulation strategies that may be impaired by the ex

Psychotic-like Experiences and Underlying Mechanisms: An Integrative Model of ADHD Symptoms, Rumination, Negative Affect, and Trauma Experience.

Background: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are low-intensity subclinical phenomena, often transient in nature. The etiology of PLEs primarily involves neurodevelopmental changes, trauma exposure, and maladaptive coping styles. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is considered to be one of the factors that increase the risk of future psychosis. Furthermore, ADHD symptoms predict a heightened incidence of traumatic experiences, ruminative thoughts, and negative affect (NA). This present study examines whether rumination and NA mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and PLE

Inflexibly sustained negative affect and rumination independently link default mode network efficiency to subclinical depressive symptoms.

Aberrant DMN connectivity and activity have been robustly linked to Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and risk for depression. This link has mostly been explained in terms of rumination, a form of negative, repetitive cognitive processing. Yet, accumulating findings are indicating altered DMN dynamics during emotional processing in MDD, pointing at a potential emotion-related DMN pathology in depression linked to inflexibly sustained emotional responses. Such a link might be especially important in understanding risk of depression. However, whether inflexible emotional processing (i.e. emotional

Association between symptoms, affect and heart rhythm in patients with persistent or paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: an ambulatory pilot study.

Symptoms in atrial fibrillation are generally assumed to correspond to heart rhythm; however, patient affect - the experience of feelings, emotion or mood - is known to frequently modulate how patients report symptoms but this has not been studied in atrial fibrillation. In this study, we investigated the relationship between affect, symptoms and heart rhythm in patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. We found that presence of negative affect portended reporting of more severe symptoms to the same or greater extent than heart rhythm.

Stressful experiences affect the course of co-occurring obsessive-compulsive and psychotic symptoms: A focus on within-subject processes.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) frequently occur in patients with psychotic disorders and are associated with higher burden and poorer prognosis. This study prospectively investigated the effect of stressful experiences on the severity of OCS and co-occurring psychotic and affective symptoms, with a focus on within-subject processes. METHOD: Monthly assessments over 6 months in patients with a psychotic disorder (n = 56) and unaffected siblings (n = 49) resulted in 309 and 277 observations, respectively. Linear mixed-effects models investigated the disaggregated effects of with…
