Proprioceptive pathways to posterior parietal areas MIP and LIPv from the dorsal column nuclei and the postcentral somatosensory cortex.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) serves as an interface between sensory and motor cortices by integrating multisensory signals with motor-related information. Sensorimotor transformation of somatosensory signals is crucial for the generation and updating of body representations and movement plans. Using retrograde transneuronal transfer of rabies virus in combination with a conventional tracer, we identified direct and polysynaptic somatosensory pathways to two posterior parietal areas, the ventral lateral intraparietal area (LIPv) and the rostral part of the medial intraparietal area (MIP)

The organizational variability of the rodent somatosensory cortex.

Rodentia is the largest mammalian order, with more than 2,000 species displaying a great diversity of morphological characteristics and living in different ecological niches (terrestrial, semi-aquatic, arboreal and fossorial). Analysis of the organization of the somatosensory areas in six species of rodents allowed us to demonstrate that although these species share a similar neocortical blueprint with other eutherian mammals, important differences exist between homologous areas across different species, probably as a function of both lifestyle and peripheral sensory specializations typical of

Hydrostatic pressure effects on vestibular hair cell afferents in fish and crustacea.

Following the discovery of a hydrostatic pressure sensor with no associated gas phase in the crab, and the knowledge that several systems of cells in culture show long term alterations to small changes in hydrostatic pressure, we show here that vestibular type II hair cells in a well known model system (the isolated elasmobranch labyrinth), are sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. This new finding for the vertebrate vestibular system may provide an explanation for low levels of resting activity in vertebrate hair cells and explain how fish without swim bladders sense hydrostatic cues. It could h

Distribution and origin of the intraepithelial nerve fibres in the feline pharyngeal mucosa.

Sensory inputs from the pharynx play an important role in initiation of the swallowing reflex and in feedback control of motor activities. Using an immunohistochemical technique and denervation procedures, we examined the distribution and origin of the intraepithelial nerve fibres in the feline pharyngeal mucosa to clarify the role of the afferent nerve in swallowing. The posterior pillar was very densely innervated, and the posterior and lateral walls of the mesopharynx had a moderate nerve density. In contrast, the base of the tongue, the vallecula, the pharyngeal surface of the epiglottis,

Putative projection of phrenic afferents to the limbic cortex in humans studied with cerebral-evoked potentials.

Respiratory sensations may rely in part on cortical integration of respiratory afferent information. In an attempt to study such projections, we recorded evoked potentials at scalp and cervical sites in 10 normal volunteers undergoing transcutaneous phrenic stimulation (0.1-ms square pulses, intensity liminal for diaphragmatic activation, series of 600 shocks at 2 Hz). A negative cerebral component of peak latency (12.79 +/- 0.54 ms; N13) was constant, and a negative spinal component (7.09 +/- 1.04 ms; N7) could also be recorded, all results being reproducible over time. Monitoring of cardiac

Vestibular nucleus projections to the parabrachial nucleus in rabbits: implications for vestibular influences on the autonomic nervous system.

Acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are characterized by autonomic effects such as pallor, nausea, and vomiting. Previous anatomic and physiologic studies suggest that one potential mediator of these effects may be light, direct vestibular nuclear projections to the nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. This study presents evidence for relatively dense, direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the parabrachial nucleus. Male albino rabbits received injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the vestibular nuclei. The tracer w

Sensory information from the upper airway: role in the control of breathing.

The functional integrity of extrathoracic airways critically depends on the proper orchestration of the activities of a set of patency-maintaining muscles. Recruitment and control of these muscles is regulated by a laryngeal and trigeminal affects that originate from pressure sensing endings. These sensors are particularly numerous among laryngeal receptors and, indeed, they constitute the main element in the respiration-modulated activity of the superior laryngeal nerve. Considering that the most compliant region of the upper airway, and thus more vulnerable to inspiratory collapse, lies cran

Cytoarchitecture and responsiveness of the medial ansate region of the cat primary somatosensory cortex.

To understand its relationship to somatosensory areas in other species, we studied the rostral bank of the medial ansate sulcus in adult cats. Neurons in the shoulder and upper part of the sulcal wall responded to low-threshold cutaneous stimuli much like neurons on the crown of the gyrus, whereas neurons in some deeper portions of the sulcus required more intense but innocuous somatic stimuli. Because we found much of the body surface re-represented in this area, we suggest that, besides the representation in area 3b, there is another cutaneous representation of the hindlimb and trunk located

Tracing neural pathways in snail olfaction: from the tip of the tentacles to the brain and beyond.

The anatomical organization of the olfactory system of terrestrial snails and slugs is described in this paper, primarily on the basis of experiments using the African snail Achatina fulica. Behavioral studies demonstrate the functional competence of olfaction in mediating food finding, conspecific attraction, and homing. The neural substrate for olfaction is characterized by an extraordinarily large number of neurons relative to the rest of the nervous system, and by the fact that many of them are unusually small. There exist multiple serial and parallel pathways connecting the olfactory orga

Chemosensitive cardiopulmonary afferents and the haemodynamic response to simulated haemorrhage in conscious rabbits.

1. We set out to test whether the signal from the heart that initiates the decompensatory phase of acute central hypovolaemia in conscious rabbits is conveyed by chemosensitive afferents. 2. Haemorrhage was simulated by inflating an inferior vena caval cuff so that cardiac output fell at a constant rate of 8% of its baseline level per min. After sham or vehicle treatments the haemodynamic response had two phases. In the first, sympathoexcitatory, phase systemic vascular conductance fell in proportion to cardiac output so that mean arterial pressure fell by only 13 mmHg. When cardiac output had

Distribution of external cuneate nucleus afferents to the cerebellum: II. Topographical distribution and zonal pattern--an experimental study with radioactive tracers in the cat.

Small injections of tritiated leucine and the autoradiographic method were used to demonstrate efferents from restricted portions of the external cuneate nucleus (NCE) to the cerebellum. Sites of injection were analyzed by reference to the distribution of primary muscle afferents in NCE. On transverse sections, the silver deposits form longitudinal bands that, in certain regions, are packed together and label the entire surface of the granular layer; in other parts, they are separated by empty longitudinal bands. The longitudinal deposits are not continuous in the rostrocaudal direction. On th

Non-invasive estimation of afferent inputs for postural stability under low levels of alcohol.

The maintenance of human equilibrium is a complex process. Several physiological systems provide afferent information for postural stabilization. This study describes a noninvasive methodology to estimate the relative roles of interacting afferent inputs relevant for postural control. A multiaxis force platform in conjunction with specially designed test procedure provided semi-quantitative insight into the roles of vision, proprioceptors and vestibular apparatus in controlling postural sway when it was perturbed by a central nervous system perturbator such as alcohol. Experiments were conduct

Distribution of vestibular afferents that innervate the sacculus and posterior canal in the gerbil.

The central distribution of afferents that innervate the macula of the saccule and the crista of the posterior canal was assessed in the gerbil following the direct injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) separately into the sensory neuroepithelia of each peripheral receptor organ. Ganglion cells innervating the posterior canal were located in the caudal part of the inferior ganglion, while those cells innervating the saccule were located in the rostral part of the inferior ganglion, scattered in the superior ganglion, and concentrated at the junction (isthmus) between the two. The paths of

Cortical and thalamic afferent connections of the insular and adjacent cortex of the rat.

Thalamic and cortical afferents to the insular and perirhinal cortex of the rat were investigated. Unilateral injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were made iontophoretically along the rhinal sulcus. HRP injections covered or invaded areas along the rhinal fissure from about the level of the middle cerebral artery to the posterior end of the fissure. The most anterior injection labeled a few cells in the mediodorsal nucleus. More posterior injections labeled neurons in the basal portion of the nucleus ventralis medialis, thus suggesting that this cortical region constitutes the rat's gus

Collaterals of spinothalamic cells in the rat.

Spinothalamic (STT) cells were investigated in the rat to determine the distribution of subpopulations with terminals in both the lateral and medial thalamus, the thalamus bilaterally, or the thalamus and the medullary reticular formation. Two or more retrogradely transported substances (fluorescent dyes, and/or horseradish peroxidase) were injected in each animal. Three combinations of injections were most commonly used: (1) injections of the medullary reticular formation and thalamus, (2) separate injections into each side of the thalamus, and (3) separate injections into the medial and late

Afferent pupillary defects in amblyopia.

We detected mild afferent pupillary defects with the "swinging flashlight" test in 4 out of 45 amblyopic patients. Our study was designed to minimize the effect of observer bias and to control for the difficulty of testing the pupils in young children. We found afferent defects in both strabismic and anisometropic amblyopes. There was no apparent relationship between pupillary response and visual acuity: afferent defects were noted in association with better than 20/100 vision in three cases but were absent in a majority of patients with profound visual loss. Vision was improved by occlusion t

Quantitative cytochemistry of RNA in axotomized feline rubral neurons.

One-sided lateral funiculotomy at the C-2 segment induced axon reaction in the contralateral red nucleus of adult cats. Two to 60 days postoperatively the animals were sacrificed and the mesencephalon was fixed in ethanol-acetic acid, 3:1. Ten micrometer paraffin sections including both red nuclei were stained for RNA with azure B after incubation in DNAse. Cytophotometric measurements of RNA content of neurons from the caudal 600-1000 micrometer of each red nucleus were made with a Zeiss Cytoscan system using an automatic scanning stage. In contrast to the heightened RNA synthesis that has be

Rac1 and Nectin3 are essential for PCP-directed axon guidance in the peripheral auditory system.

Our sense of hearing is critically dependent on the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) that connect the sound receptors in the organ of Corti (OC) to the cochlear nuclei of the hindbrain. Type I SGNs innervate inner hair cells (IHCs) to transmit sound signals, while type II SGNs (SGNIIs) innervate outer hair cells (OHCs) to detect moderate-to-intense sound. During development, SGNII afferents make a characteristic 90-degree turn toward the base of the cochlea and innervate multiple OHCs. It has been shown that the Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) pathway acts non-autonomously to mediate environmental cu
