Writing in aphasia rehabilitation: cursive vs manuscript.

Reading and writing performance was observed in 30 adult aphasic patients to determine whether there was a significant difference when stimuli and manual responses were varied in the written form: cursive versus manuscript. Patients were asked to read aloud 10 words written cursively and 10 words written in manuscript form. They were then asked to write on dictation 10 words responses using cursive writing and 10 words using manuscript writing. Number of words correctly read, number of words correctly written, and number of letters correctly written in the proper sequence were tallied for both

Right hemisphere dominance for language in a woman with schizophrenia and a porencephalic cyst of the left hemisphere.

A large left hemisphere porencephalic cyst was incidentally found in a 48-year-old woman (MS) with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)-5 diagnosis of schizophrenia. The encephaloclastic characteristics of the cyst indicated that it was acquired between the 22nd and 24th gestational weeks, after the major waves of neuronal migration had tapered off. The cyst destroyed the left temporal and occipital lobes, and the inferior parietal lobule. Surprisingly, MS had no evidence of aphasia, alexia, agraphia, or ideational apraxia; in contrast, cognitive functions dependent on the integrity of th…

[When shape-invariant recognition ('A' = 'a') fails. A case study of pure alexia and kinesthetic facilitation].

A right-handed patient, aged 72, manifested alexia without agraphia, a right homonymous hemianopia and an impaired ability to identify visually presented objects. He was completely unable to read words aloud and severely deficient in naming visually presented letters. He responded to orthographic familiarity in the lexical decision tasks of the Psycholinguistic Assessments of Language Processing in Aphasia (PALPA) rather than to the lexicality of the letter strings. He was impaired at deciding whether two letters of different case (e.g., A, a) are the same, though he could detect real letters …

[Non-persistent "doll phenomenon" in a patient with right thalamic infarction].

An 81-year-old right-handed woman was admitted because of acute dysarthria and left hemiparesis. She had lived herself without aids until the admission. On neurological examination she was confused and disoriented. She was ambulant, but had mild dysarthria and mild left hemiparesis. Neuropsychological tests showed severe impairment of memory, mild impairment of visual cognition, decreased fluency of word recall and mild paramnesia, but no acalculia, agraphia, aphasia or apraxia. MRI of the brain showed small infarction in the right anterior thalamus. 123I-IMP SPECT demonstrated a decrease in C…

[Bilateral crossed visuomotor ataxia--a case report].

We observed a 55 y.o. right-handed woman, who was suspected of splenium tumor (glioblastoma?) by CT scan and presented bilateral crossed visuomotor ataxia proposed by Rondot et al. Left unilateral apraxia and agraphia were not found, but left unilateral hemialexia was evident by tachistoscopic examinations. In regard to bilateral crossed visuomotor ataxia, we suggested that at least there might be three possible hypotheses about its realization mechanism. (1) Callosal lesion might disconnect heterotopical fibers which runs from one occipital lobe to another frontal lobe. (2) Integrated informa…

Implications and Identification of Specific Learning Disability Using Weighted Ensemble Learning Model.

BACKGROUND: Learning disabilities, categorized as neurodevelopmental disorders, profoundly impact the cognitive development of young children. These disabilities affect text comprehension, reading, writing and problem-solving abilities. Specific learning disabilities (SLDs), most notably dyslexia and dysgraphia, can significantly hinder students' academic achievement. The timely identification of such students is crucial in providing them with essential assistance and facilitating the development of skills required to overcome their limitations. METHODS: The proposed model, which utilizes art

Bimodal aphasia and dysgraphia: Phonological output buffer aphasia and orthographic output buffer dysgraphia in spoken and sign language.

We report a case of crossmodal bilingual aphasia-aphasia in two modalities, spoken and sign language-and dysgraphia in both writing and fingerspelling. The patient, Sunny, was a 42 year-old woman after a left temporo-parietal stroke, a speaker of Hebrew, Romanian, and English and an adult learner, daily user of Israeli Sign language (ISL). We assessed Sunny's spoken and sign languages using a comprehensive test battery of naming, reading, and repetition tasks, and also analysed her spontaneous-speech and sign. Her writing and fingerspelling were assessed using tasks of dictation, naming, and d

Tonal and orthographic analysis in a Cantonese-speaking individual with nonfluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Clinical understanding of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) has been established based on English-speaking population. The lack of linguistic diversity in research hinders the diagnosis of PPA in non-English speaking patients. This case report describes the tonal and orthographic deficits of a multilingual native Cantonese-speaking woman with nonfluent/agrammatic variant PPA (nfvPPA) and progressive supranuclear palsy. Our findings suggest that Cantonese-speaking nfvPPA patients exhibit tone production impairments, tone perception deficits at the lexical selection processing, and linguistic dy

Evaluating Spelling in Glioma Patients Undergoing Awake Surgery: a Systematic Review.

A main goal of awake surgery is to preserve language in order to facilitate return to work and maintain quality of life. Although spelling has become crucial in daily life, it has received little attention in awake surgery practice. We review assessments of spelling carried out in awake surgery studies, to inspect how current neurofunctional theories of spelling may guide pre-, intra- and post-operative neurosurgical practice. A systematic database search in Embase, Medline, PubMed and Web of Science identified studies reporting on spelling assessment in glioma patients undergoing awake surger

Double-letter processing in surface dyslexia and dysgraphia following a left temporal lesion: A multimodal neuroimaging study.

Neuropsychological data about acquired impairments in reading and writing provide a strong basis for the theoretical framework of the dual-route models. The present study explored the functional neuroanatomy of the reading and spelling processing system. We describe the reading and writing performance of patient CF, an Italian native speaker who developed an extremely selective reading and spelling deficit (his spontaneous speech, oral comprehension, repetition and oral picture naming were almost unimpaired) in processing double letters associated with surface dyslexia and dysgraphia, followin

Lexical and buffer effects in reading and in writing Noun-Noun compound nouns.

Reading and writing Noun-Noun compound nouns was investigated in two Italian aphasic patients: one with phonological dyslexia and the other with phonological dysgraphia. The patients were required to read, write and repeat a list of Noun-Noun compounds and length-matched non-compound nouns. The dyslexic patient RF read compounds better than non-compounds, and his repetition was flawless for both categories. The dysgraphic patient DA wrote non-compounds better than compounds because of a deficit in keeping separate entries at the lemma level. Differential performance when processing compounds a

The contribution of attentional mechanisms to an irregularity effect at the graphemic buffer level.

This study analyzes acquired dysgraphia observed in a French-speaking woman. The results point to an impairment of the graphemic buffer, i.e., the processing stage where abstract orthographic representations are temporarily stored while planning the written production. However, the spelling errors were more frequent in the irregular than in the regular words. A qualitative analysis of the errors in the irregular misspelled words showed that, in general, these were not "regularization" errors, but rather the same characteristics as the phonologically implausible errors found in the regular word

Assessing Developmental Gerstmann's Syndrome in an adult: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Developmental Gerstmann's Syndrome (DGS) is a proposed neurological disorder characterized by finger agnosia, acalculia, right-left disorientation, agraphia, and in some cases, constructional dyspraxia. Case studies of DGS are limited, particularly those reporting on assessments in adults. The present case study demonstrates the presence of DGS symptoms in a young female adult with an autoimmune disorder but no clear history of neurological damage. METHOD: This client sought academic accommodations for her undergraduate math classes. She was administered a comprehensive neuropsycho…

Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging regression of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in an AIDS patient after intensive antiretroviral therapy.

A 36-year-old homosexual man with 6 months of visual symptoms and headaches had right homonymous hemianopia, mild new learning impairment, and alexia with agraphia. The initial brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was reported consistent with left occipital infarction. Subsequent MRI demonstrated abnormal demyelination in subcortical white matter and deep parieto-occipital white matter bilaterally, but primarily left. Human immunodeficiency virus testing and cerebrospinal fluid polymerase chain reaction for JC virus DNA were both positive, consistent with progressive multifocal leukoenc…
