Prevalence rates study of selected isolated non-Mendelian congenital anomalies in the Hutterite population of Alberta, 1980-2016.

A study of the prevalence rates for selected isolated non-Mendelian congenital anomalies in the Hutterite Brethren of Alberta, Canada was undertaken to further examine longitudinal data in this isolated community that was last reported in 1985 (Lowry et al., 1985), although there are numerous publications on recessive disorders (Boycott et al., 2008; Triggs-Raine et al., 2016). Cases were ascertained from the Alberta Congenital Anomaly Surveillance System for the years 1997-2016. Since our initial results showed some surprising findings in the Hutterite Brethren, such as zero cases of spina bi…

Sheep-Associated Malignant Catarrhal Fever-Like Skin Disease in a Free-Ranging Bighorn Sheep ( Ovis canadensis ), Alberta, Canada.

Malignant catarrhal fever-like clinical disease was diagnosed in a free-ranging bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) from Alberta, Canada, in June 2015. Antemortem and gross pathology findings included muscle atrophy, marked weight loss, and bilaterally symmetric alopecia with hyperpigmentation and crusting over the face, medial surfaces of the pinnae, dorsal trunk, distal limbs, perineal area, and tail. Histologically, the skin lesions were characterized by granulomatous mural folliculitis with numerous multinucleated giant cells and fewer lymphocytes and eosinophils consistent with previous rep…

Antimicrobial resistance of fecal Escherichia coli isolated from grow-finish pigs in 20 herds in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Escherichia coli (n = 1439), isolated from the feces of apparently healthy grow-finish pigs in 20 herds in Alberta and Saskatchewan, were tested for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobials. All isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ceftriaxone, and ciprofloxacin and less than 1% was resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cefoxitin, ceftiofur, gentamicin, and nalidixic acid. Resistance was most common to tetracycline (66.8%), sulfamethoxazole (46.0%) and streptomycin (33.4%). Twenty-one percent of the isolates were susceptible to all drugs, while 57% were resistant to 2 or more antimicrobials. …

Isolation of wild poliovirus type 3 among members of a religious community objecting to vaccination--Alberta, Canada, 1993.

During September 1992-February 1993, 68 cases of poliomyelitis occurred among members of a religious community in the Netherlands. Because members of an affiliated religious community in Alberta, Canada, had direct contact (i.e, travel to and from the Netherlands) with members of the affected community, health authorities in Alberta conducted an investigation during January-February 1993 to determine whether this poliovirus had been imported. This report summarizes the results of this investigation.

Ending Abusive Patient- and Family-Initiated Relationships in Alberta Nursing Practice: The Case for a Nurse-Specific Regulatory Standard.

Background/Objectives: Patient- and family-initiated abuse of nurses is widely recognized as workplace violence, but it also raises a distinct professional-regulatory question: when may a nurse end or restrict an established therapeutic relationship without creating an allegation of abandonment or discriminatory denial of care? This perspective focuses on Alberta and examines whether the province's nursing regulator provides a comprehensive, nurse-specific, all-registrant standard comparable in clarity to Alberta's physician standard. The concern is not the absence of every form of protection …

Clinical Outcomes for Multiple Myeloma Patients With Prior Exposure to a Combination of a Proteasome Inhibitor and an Immunomodulatory Agent in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Proteasome inhibitors (PI) and immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) are important backbones in early line treatments for patients with multiple myeloma (MM). This study examined real-world treatment patterns, clinical outcomes and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) of double-class exposed (DCE) patients with MM after prior PI and IMiD-based treatment. METHODS: DCE patients were identified using integrated administrative databases in the province of Alberta, Canada. DCE patients who commenced subsequent lines of therapy (LOT) between January 2012 and December 2022 were included. RES…

Validation of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) database in Alberta, Canada and a comparative analysis with Swedish and Swiss data.

BACKGROUND: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Interactive Audit System (EIAS) is a retrospective database containing information about the pre-, intra-, and post-operative components of surgical patient care. EIAS was created to allow centers that have adopted ERAS protocols to assess their performance. To have confidence in the data collected by EIAS, its completeness, accuracy and validity must be assessed. This study aims to assess the validity of the Alberta EIAS when compared to the gold standard measurement for patient data, the patient electronic medical record (EMR). METHODS:…

Risk of cancer among individuals with a history of bacterial sexually transmitted infections: A population-based study in Alberta, Canada.

We investigated cancer risk among individuals with a prior bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis using a retrospective cohort study of all Albertan residents diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis during 2000-2014, that was then linked to the Alberta Cancer Registry. Follow-up started 5 years from their first bacterial STI diagnosis and continued until the first instance of a cancer diagnosis, death, or the study end date (December 31, 2019). Internal comparisons between the bacterial STI groups were undertaken using adjusted hazard ratios, while sex-specific stand…

Body mass index and the prevalence of high-risk colorectal adenomas in a population undergoing screening colonoscopy in Alberta, Canada.

PURPOSE: There is limited evidence regarding body mass index (BMI) as an early marker of high-risk adenoma (HRA) at the time of screening colonoscopy. Because high-risk adenomas (HRA) can develop into colorectal cancer (CRC), BMI could serve as an important clinical predictor of future risk of CRC. METHODS: We examined data from 1831 adults undergoing screening colonoscopy at the Forzani & MacPhail Colon Cancer Screening Center in Alberta, Canada. We fit multivariable logistic regression models to examine the association between BMI and HRA. Non-linear relationships for BMI on HRA were also e…

Characterizing dose changes and tapering among opioid users: A brief report on a population-level study in Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Monitoring changes in oral morphine equivalents (OMEs) is an important parameter to understand how opioids are being used at the population level. However, changes in opioid doses and tapering have not been well defined. DESIGN: We conducted a population-based exploratory data analysis (EDA) to characterize changes in opioid doses and tapering of opioids among patients in Alberta (AB). A literature review was conducted to assess opioid tapering. SETTING: Using dispense data from 2020 to 2021 provided by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), we assessed changes in…

A qualitative study of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women seeking pelvic organ prolapse surgery in Alberta, Canada.

In addition to altering public infrastructure and social patterning, the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed many pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surg … d between January and July 2021, which coincided with the second and third waves of the pandemic in Alberta, Canada, and before full immunisation was available for all Albertans. Pandemic-related interview excerpts were thematically analysed, and four main findings emerged. (1) Though surgical delay meant living with unpleasant symptoms for longer than an …

Indirect costs associated with out-of-country referral for proton therapy: a survey of adult and pediatric patients in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Patients in Alberta, Canada are referred to the United States (US) for proton treatment. The Alberta Ministry of Health pays for the proton treatment and the cost of flights to and from the United States. This study aimed to determine the out-of-pocket expenses incurred by patients or patients' families. METHODS: An electronic survey was sent to 59 patients treated with proton therapy between January 2008 and September 2019. Survey questions asked about expenses related to travel to the US and those incurred while staying in the US, reimbursement of expenses, and whether any time …

Facilitators and Barriers to Care in Rural Emergency Departments in Alberta for Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): An Interpretive Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Home dialysis offers many advantages to patients, but they require support to manage a home-based therapy such as peritoneal dialysis (PD). A rural emergency department provides an important safety net for patients requiring medical care, including managing complications of PD, such as peritonitis. Patients living in northern Alberta are spread out geographically and can be far from a PD training center, yet anecdotally, many rural sites do not provide care for these patients. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify the facilitators and barriers to nursing care in rural emergency depar…

University of Alberta Hospital Acute and Convalescent Polio Care and the Reintegration of Polio Patients into Albertan Communities, 1953-80.

Following Canada's largest polio epidemic in 1953, Station 67 at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) in Edmonton became home to patients who contracted the virus. As young as nine years old, some of these patients lived at the UAH for more than three decades. Akin to wartime services, the epidemic banded together families, patients, doctors, nurses, community members, and later respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists. The nature of the disease, the government response, and the social and economic climate dramatically affected the lived experiences of patients in Alberta's fight…
