Off-premise alcohol sales policies, drinking, and sexual risk among people living with HIV.

Drinking among HIV-positive individuals increases risks of disease progression and possibly sexual transmission. We examined whether state alcohol sales policies are associated with drinking and sexual risk among people living with HIV. In a multivariate analysis combining national survey and state policy data, we found that HIV-positive residents of states allowing liquor sales in drug and grocery stores had 70% to 88% greater odds of drinking, daily drinking, and binge drinking than did HIV-positive residents of other states. High-risk sexual activity was more prevalent in states permitting

Rats bred for high alcohol drinking are more sensitive to delayed and probabilistic outcomes.

Alcoholics and heavy drinkers score higher on measures of impulsivity than nonalcoholics and light drinkers. This may be because of factors that predate drug exposure (e.g. genetics). This study examined the role of genetics by comparing impulsivity measures in ethanol-naive rats selectively bred based on their high [high alcohol drinking (HAD)] or low [low alcohol drinking (LAD)] consumption of ethanol. Replicates 1 and 2 of the HAD and LAD rats, developed by the University of Indiana Alcohol Research Center, completed two different discounting tasks. Delay discounting examines sensitivity to…

Economic evaluation of interventions for problem drinking and alcohol dependence: cost per QALY estimates.

AIMS: To compare the performance of competing and complementary interventions for prevention or treatment of problem drinking and alcohol dependence. To provide an example of how health maximising decision-makers might use performance measures such as cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) league tables to formulate an optimal package of interventions for problem drinking and alcohol dependence. METHODS: A time-dependent state-transition model was used to estimate QALYs gained per person for each intervention as compared to usual care in the relevant target population. RESULTS: Cost per

[The influence of alcohol drinking on medical care expenditures among National Health Insurance beneficiaries].

Heavy alcohol drinking is an important risk factor for some lifestyle-related diseases. However, the relationship between drinking habits and medical care expenditures has not been elucidated in a Japanese general population. We examined this relationship in a 9-year cohort study. Study participants were 2039 National Health Insurance beneficiaries aged 40-69 years living in a rural Japanese community. The baseline survey, with medical check-up, was performed in 1989 or 1990 and the subjects' drinking habits were estimated by questionnaire. Medical care use and costs were monitored by linkage …

Moderate doses of ethanol partially reverse avoidance learning deficits in high-alcohol-drinking rats.

We previously reported that ethanol-naive high-alcohol-drinking (HAD1 and HAD2) rats exhibited selective deficits in active avoidance learning, as compared to low-alcohol-drinking (LAD1 and LAD2) rats, in a signaled bar-pressing task [Alcohol. Clin. Exp. Res. 24 (2000) 1778]. In the current study, we used appetitive and aversive learning tasks to assess whether administration of ethanol influences approach and avoidance learning in HAD and LAD rats. Rats were administered 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 g ethanol/kg body weight during appetitive and aversive conditioning sessions. We found that ethanol

Risk of heavy drinking and alcohol use disorders in social phobia: a prospective analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The risks of heavy drinking and alcohol abuse/dependence were prospectively assessed among individuals with DSM-III social phobia and individuals with subclinical social phobia (irrational fear of social situations without significant impairment or avoidance). METHOD: The baseline interview for the Baltimore site of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area program was completed in 1981. Between 1993 and 1996 the original cohort was traced. Among the 1,161 individuals who did not have episodes of heavy drinking or current or prior alcohol abuse/dependence at baseline, logistic regression wa

Israeli college student alcohol use: the association of background characteristics and regular drinking patterns.

In Israel, there is a lack of research regarding the association between background characteristics of university students and their use of alcohol. In response, a cohort of 1276 male and female undergraduate students was surveyed at a major university in the country. Among the study participants, 21% (270) reported regular, weekly use of alcohol. Men were much more inclined to drink on a weekly basis than women; and, 7% of the students who used alcohol regularly did so on a daily basis. Approximately 70% of the students who used alcohol drank in the company of friends; and, one-third of the a

The relationships between declines in drinking and alcohol problems among Ontario students: 1979-1991.

This article reports data from a 12-year cross-sectional study of drinking and drinking problems among students in grades 7-13 in Ontario schools. It was expected that rates of drinking and levels of drinking problems would be related. Large declines in drinking levels were found, however declines were found for only about half of the drinking-problem items. No declines were found in rates of the most serious problems and this indicates there is an unchanging proportion of students with drinking problems who will likely need interventions such as treatment and counseling.

Effect of chronic vasopressin treatment on alcohol drinking of Brattleboro HZ and DI rats.

Preference for alcohol was determined for three groups of male and female rats, 100-150 days old, comprised of: (1) Long Evans (LE); (2) LE-derived Brattleboro heterozygous (HZ): and (3) Brattleboro homozygous (DI) animals afflicted with diabetes insipidus due to vasopressin deficiency. Each alcohol drinking test was run over 11 days during which food, water and an ethyl alcohol solution, increased in concentration from 3% to 25%, were freely available. Following an initial preference screen, 100 milli-units of vasopressin tannate in oil was administered subcutaneously, during a second prefere…

Social anxiety, daily moods, and alcohol use over time among heavy social drinking men.

To investigate the tension reduction hypothesis of alcohol use in the natural environment and with several forms of tension, 36 heavy social drinking young men kept daily records of their drinking, anxiety, unhappiness, and anger for 3 months and for 1 month from 6 to 7 months from the start of the study. No significant correlations were found between the frequency and intensity of any of the daily moods and drinking rates or intoxication frequency, either concurrently or within a few days or weeks. Drinking was also unrelated to general trait anxiety, depression, stressful life experiences, a

Are Increases in Purchasing Alcohol-Free and Low-Alcohol Drinks Associated With Attempts to Cut Down on Alcohol Consumption in England? A Time Series Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol-free and low-alcohol products (≤ 1.2% ABV; no/lo products) are a growing market in high-income countries, including Great Britain. These products may support people in reducing alcohol consumption, but their impact on public health is unclear. To address this gap, we analysed whether changes over time in the prevalence of households purchasing no/lo products were associated with at-risk drinkers reporting: (i) high motivation to cut down; (ii) cut down attempts; (iii) serious cut down attempts; and (iv) using no/lo products during attempts. METHODS: We used time series a

Multi-modal neuroimaging reveals differences in alcohol-cue reactivity but not neurometabolite concentrations in adolescents who drink alcohol.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this multi-modal neuroimaging study was to identify neuroscience-informed treatment targets for adolescent alcohol use disorder (AUD) by examining potential neural alterations associated with adolescent alcohol use. METHODS: Adolescents (ages 17-19) who heavily used (n=49) or did not use alcohol (n=22) were recruited for a multi-modal neuroimaging protocol, including proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy within the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and an fMRI alcohol cue-reactivity task. The alcohol cue-reactivity task was analyzed across 11 a priori regio

Drinking context and drinking problems among black, white, and Hispanic men and women in the 1984, 1995, and 2005 U.S. National Alcohol Surveys.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferred drinking contexts of different gender and ethnic groups (white, black, and Hispanic men and women), by examining where these groups do most of their drinking and to what extent drinking contexts preferences are associated with certain drinking-related consequences. METHOD: The study used data from the 1984, 1995, and 2005 U.S. National Alcohol Surveys. Among current drinkers, cluster analyses of volume drunk in six contexts (restaurants, bars, others' parties, or when spending a quiet evening at home, having friends drop ov

Domestication of drinking: a survey study of changes in types of drinking occasions during periods of increasing and decreasing alcohol consumption in the 2000s in Finland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In Finland, per-capita alcohol consumption increased in the early 2000s and decreased after 2007. Our aim was to determine how these changes originated from changes in drinking practices. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional general-population surveys. SETTING: Finland in 2000, 2008 and 2016. PARTICIPANTS: Finnish residents aged 15-69 years (n = 6703, response rate 59-78%). MEASUREMENTS: Event-level data on drinking occasions (n = 21 097). Types of drinking occasions (drinking practices) were identified with latent class analysis using occasion characteristics. The aggrega

Parental alcohol supply in early childhood and adolescent drinking: Evidence from a prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Parental alcohol supply in early childhood may increase the risk of alcohol use in late adolescence. This study examined its longitudinal impact and the distinct roles of mothers' and fathers' drinking. METHODS: We studied 1,891 mother-child pairs from the Czech European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood. Mothers reported parental alcohol supply at ages 3, 5, 7, and 11 years, while adolescent alcohol use was reported by mothers, pediatricians, and youth at ages 18 and 19 years. Structural equation modeling assessed the longitudinal link between early alcohol supply (th

Social media, drinking motives, and alcohol use in young adults: a longitudinal mediation study.

Alcohol use remains a significant problem among young adults (YAs), and growing evidence suggests exposure to alcohol-related content (ARC) on social media may contribute to increased alcohol use. ARC often portrays drinking as rewarding and/or normative, potentially shaping drinking motives, which are key predictors of alcohol use. Therefore, the present study sought to longitudinally examine if drinking motives mediate the associations between (a) exposure to peers' ARC on social media and (b) perceived number of friends posting ARC and YA alcohol use over an 8-week period. A sample of N = 2
