Insights into voluntary plasma donation: A study of motivators and obstacles.

BACKGROUND: Plasma-derived medicines (PDMs) are essential for treating various disorders and require large volumes of human plasma. The deba … nors completed the motivation questionnaire, and 664 one-time donors filled out the barrier survey. Altruism motivated frequent donors, while barriers included time constraints, preference for blood donation, and lack of awareness. Among frequent donors, 84.00% [CI 95%: 0.79-0.89] were willing to donate plasma or had no preference between donating plasma o …

Deontological Guilt and Moral Distress as Diametrically Opposite Phenomena: A Case Study of Three Clinicians.

Feelings of guilt are human emotions that may arise if a person committed an action that contradicts basic moral mores or failed to commit an action that is considered moral according to their ethical standards and values. Psychological scholarship distinguishes between altruistic guilt (AG) and deontological guilt (DG). AG results from having caused harm to an innocent victim, either by acting or failing to act, whereas DG is caused by violating a moral principle. Although physicians may be expected to experience frequent feelings of guilt in their demanding and intensive work, it is surprisi

What would it take to convince you to donate? A survey study of the relationship between motivators, barriers, and payment for whole blood, plasma, and platelet donation.

BACKGROUND: With growing discussion about blood donor remuneration, the present study examined the level of payment that may be required to … acy and more negative donation attitudes. Donation-related motivators (i.e., warm glow, regret, and altruism) were indirectly related to lower payment levels via higher self-efficacy and more positive donation attitudes. CONCLUSION: Despite reporting a strong commitment to nonremunerated blood donation, many respondents with and without a history of blood …

Computational and Neurobiological Substrates of Cost-Benefit Integration in Altruistic Helping Decision.

Although altruistic behaviors, e.g., sacrificing one's own interests to alleviate others' suffering, are widely observed in human society, altruism varies greatly across individuals. Such individual differences in altruistic preference have been hypothesized to arise from both individuals' dispositional empathic concern for others' welfare and context-specific cost-benefit integration processes. However, how cost-benefit integration is implemented in the brain and how it is linked to empathy remain unclear. Here, we combine a novel paradigm with the model-based functional magnetic resonance im…

A meta-analysis of the associations between callous-unemotional traits and empathy, prosociality, and guilt.

Antisocial behavior is harmful, financially costly to society, and hard to treat. Callous-unemotional (CU) traits, which predict greater risk for antisocial behavior, are defined in theoretical and diagnostic models as representing low empathy, guilt, and prosociality. However, no meta-analytic reviews have systematically integrated the findings of studies that have reported associations between measures of CU traits and empathy, guilt, or prosociality, or potential moderators of these associations, including gender, age, severity of antisocial behavior, and informant (i.e., self or other repo

Solve the organ shortage: let the bidding begin!

Commercialization of transplantable human organs is the only sure way to end the crisis of their supply. This is best accomplished by implementing a free, non-profit, nationwide, ultimately global online auction market. It should be independent of the current United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) system dealing solely with altruistic donation, and of governmental, sectarian, academic, and other bureaucratic control. The operation of such an auction is described with a hypothetical example. An included provision guarantees equity for poor, uninsured, and indigent recipients. Money accrued can

Stress of AIDS caregiving: a preliminary overview of the issues.

This paper describes the stressors experienced by lovers and friends who were caregivers to AIDS patients and the social supports and coping strategies they drew on in efforts to mediate stress. From exploratory, intensive interviews with San Francisco men who provided care in their homes or those of the patients, three types of stressor were identified. One involves exigencies within the caregiver role itself, such as the demands and burdens encountered in housekeeping and nursing activities and in the management of financial and legal affairs. A second type of stressor involves the uncertain

Choosing Not to Eat Meat: What Characterizes Independently Vegetarian Children?

A growing body of research has aimed to map the characteristics of extraordinary altruists-such as those who have donated a kidney to a stranger. However, this research has primarily focused on adults, and we know little about the development of extraordinary altruism. While children cannot donate their organs to strangers nor large portions of their income to charity, they can choose not to eat animals. In this study we examine independent vegetarians (i.e., children who become vegetarian while being raised in meat eating families) as a potential case-study of extraordinarily altruistic motiv…

Guidance for clinical management of pathogenic variant carriers at elevated genetic risk for ALS/FTD.

There is a growing understanding of the presymptomatic stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and nascent efforts aiming to prevent these devastating neurodegenerative diseases have emerged. This progress is attributable, in no small part, to the altruism of people living with pathogenic variants at elevated genetic risk for ALS/FTD via their willingness to participate in natural history studies and disease prevention trials. Increasingly, this community has also highlighted the urgent need to develop paradigms for providing appropriate clinical care fo…

Trust and trust funds: How others' childhood and current social class context influence trust behavior and expectations.

Trust is vital for success in all kinds of social interactions. But how do people decide whether an individual can be trusted? One factor pe … s to honor that trust or perceive them as moral. Instead, the effect of current class was linked to altruism. Our findings emerged in samples drawn from different populations, across varying manipulations of social class, in actual and hypothetical decisions, and with imaginary targets and real acquaintances. We consider implications for the psychology of …

The relationship of the source of punishment and personality traits with investment and punishment in a public goods game.

In this study, we investigated the motivations behind punishing individuals who exploit common resources, a phenomenon crucial for resource preservation. While some researchers suggest punishment stems from concern for the common good, others propose it is driven by anger toward free riders. To probe these motivations, we developed a modified public goods game in which participants had the option to use their own money or the money from the common pool to punish free riders. The analysis included choice behavior, mouse trajectories, and personality traits like anger, empathy, and altruism. Acc…

Lower omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and lower docosahexaenoic acid in men with pedophilia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that abnormalities in plasma phospholipid fatty acids may play a role in aggressive behavior. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that a depletion of the serum phospholipid n-3 higher unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) and, in particular, of DHA may take part …

When Generosity Backfires: Children's Evaluation of Sharing With Negative Social Consequences.

Generosity is widely regarded as one of the most praiseworthy virtues. However, when individuals engage in generous acts, such behavior can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, such as overshadowing the reputations of others. Across two studies (N = 512), we examined how 8- to 12-year-old children and adults evaluate generous sharing when it undermines a peer's reputation, and whether this evaluation is moderated by the social relationship between the individuals involved. Participants were presented with a vignette in which an actor shared more than a peer-who was either a friend or a s

COVID-19 pandemic and prosociality: An experiment with healthcare professionals.

We study the extent to which exposure to COVID-19 relates to healthcare professionals' prosociality. Drawing on empirical evidence from an incentivized experiment and a companion survey of healthcare professionals (HCPs) at a large Italian hospital (N = 194), we find that different forms of exposure to COVID-19 predict their altruistic motivation in heterogeneous ways. HCPs who worked in COVID-19 wards or had a close relative or friend severely affected by the virus are more than 5 percentage points more likely to prioritize patient welfare over personal gain, with the association for professi

Health needs of older people and age-inclusive health care in humanitarian emergencies in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

Health needs of older people in humanitarian settings are poorly documented, negatively affecting the appropriateness of health services they receive. This Review identified the major health needs of older people across humanitarian contexts, including non-communicable diseases and mental health conditions (eg, psychological distress and depression). Barriers to health care of older people included inaccessibility of health-care services; shortage of appropriate health care; insufficient availability of medications and medical equipment; poor geriatric expertise of health-care staff, health po

Humanitarian missions and visual outcomes in cataract surgery: A literature review.

The limited accessibility to ophthalmological services in remote regions of developing countries poses a significant challenge in visual healthcare. Cataracts and refractive errors are prominent causes of visual impairment, and surgery, despite being an efficient option, faces barriers in developing countries due to financial and geographical constraints. Humanitarian missions play a vital role in addressing this issue. The improvement in the accuracy of calculating IOL power through techniques such as keratometry and biometry is a fundamental step towards optimizing surgical outcomes and the
