The diagnostic usefulness of dermoscopy for identifying six-legged larval ticks.

Ticks are vectors of a variety of diseases such as Lyme disease and Japanese spotted fever. We examined an 87-year-old female with multiple tick bites by at least 236 larval Amblyomma testudinarium infestations. Numerous tick bites are generally caused by the six-legged larvae, which were verified in this case by dermoscopy. The present case indicates the diagnostic usefulness of dermoscopy for six-legged larval tick bites.

Tick and tick-borne disease management requires an integrated One Health approach.

Endemic and emerging tick-borne diseases in humans and animals in the US are becoming more frequent and are likely driven by several socioec … ticks (Dermacentor variabilis), Rocky Mountain wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni), lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum), Gulf Coast ticks (Amblyomma maculatum), brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), and the recent invader, Longhorned ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis). In addition, the epidemiology of several diseases is also discussed, such as Lyme …

Resistance and cross-resistance in rabbits to adults of three species of African ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

Resistance to Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma hebraeum was investigated in the laboratory by infesting rabbits with adults of each of the three species followed by homospecific or heterospecific secondary infestations. Significantly lower female engorged weights and egg mass weights were taken as evidence of protective immunity. Following a single infestation with adults, rabbits developed homospecific protective immunity (resistance) to only R. appendiculatus and A. hebraeum; primary infestation with A. variegatum did not protect against secondary infestation …

Diversity of free-living ticks and serological evidence of spotted fever group Rickettsia and ticks associated to dogs, Porto Velho, Western Amazon, Brazil.

Rondônia is the only state in the North Region of Brazil to have registered confirmed cases of Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF). The present study investigated the epidemiological cycle of Rickettsia spp. by surveying free-living ixodofauna and tick parasitism of dogs in the municipality of Porto Velho, Rondônia State. Ticks and dogs were tested for the presence of Rickettsia spp. DNA and dog serum was tested for reactivity to anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies. Tick collection and dog blood sampling were performed in peri-urban and rural environments at 11 locations. Eight free-living Amblyomma spe…

Detection of Rickettsia amblyommii in association with a tick bite rash.

In the summer of 2006, an Amblyomma americanum tick was removed from a woman in central North Carolina, who subsequently developed a rash at the site of tick attachment. When examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Borrelia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Rickettsia, and Bartonella DNA, only the Rickettsia primers generated an amplicon, which was identified as "R. amblyommii" by sequencing. To our knowledge, this is the first case in which R. amblyommii was temporally associated with a rash.

Molecular Survey of Hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. and Bartonella spp. in Coatis (Nasua nasua) from Central-Western Brazil.

Even though previous works showed molecular evidence of hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas) in ring-tailed coatis (Nasua nasua) from Brazil, Bartonella sp. has not been reported in these mammals so far. The present study aimed to detect the above-mentioned agents in coatis' blood and associated ectoparasites, assessing the association between these infections and red blood parameters. Survey for tick-borne pathogens in Amazonian ixodid ticks, Brazil.

The Amazon biome harbors an exceptional diversity of wildlife, yet remains understudied regarding tick-borne pathogens. This study investigated the species richness of ixodid ticks and the occurrence of associated microorganisms in three natural areas of the Brazilian Amazon. During 2023-2024, a total of 1084 ticks were collected from vegetation and vertebrate hosts and identified into 16 species, predominantly within the genus Amblyomma. A subset of 289 ticks was subjected to molecular screening for bacteria of the genera Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Borrelia, as well as protozoa of the order P…

Spatial distribution and clustering of medically important tick species in Illinois: Implications for tick-borne disease risk.

The geographic range of medically significant tick species has expanded across the United States, with Illinois experiencing increased tick populations and incidence of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in recent decades. This study investigated the spatial distribution of three tick species: Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), and Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) in Illinois, using data collected through active surveillance from 2018 to 2022. A total of 476 records of 1414 ticks were analyzed. Spatial analytical techniques, including species distrib…

Sharing of living area and exposure of domestic and wild canids to ticks, Rickettsia parkeri and Rangelia vitalii in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil.

Spotted fever caused by the bacterium Rickettsia parkeri, and canine rangeliosis caused by the protozoan Rangelia vitalii, are emerging or re-emerging tick-borne diseases in Brazil, where the main tick vectors are Amblyomma ovale and Amblyomma aureolatum, respectively. In the present study, we evaluated exposure to R. parkeri and R. vitalii infection among domestic (Canis lupus familiaris) and wild (Cerdocyon thous) canids sharing living areas within an Atlantic Forest area of southern Brazil. Four different domestic dogs and three different wild canids were captured. Most of the ticks collect…

Rickettsia spp. in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from wild birds in Caldas, Colombia.

Several bacteria belonging to the genus Rickettsia are recognized as causal agents of diseases in domestic and wild animals and humans. These bacteria are considered emerging or reemerging and are transmitted by ticks, fleas, and lice vectors. In recent decades, there have been reports of rickettsias in ticks of the genus Amblyomma, Ixodes, and Haemaphysalis collected from wild birds. Accordingly, birds play a plausible role in the transport and spread of ticks infected by Rickettsia spp. In this study, we performed molecular detection of Rickettsia species in ticks collected from wild birds i…

Sensitivity of host-seeking nymphal lone star ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) to immersion in heated water.

Host-seeking nymphal Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) were placed into heated water, and their survival or their torpidity was recorded as a function of exposure time. Exposures were determined that either kill the nymphs or affect their mobility. All nymphs died when exposed for a minute or more to a temperature > 51 degrees C. Nearly all nymphs remained motionless for a period of time when exposed for 3 min to a temperature > 44 degrees C.

Beyond Rocky Mountain spotted fever: investigation of the presence and diversity of spotted fever Rickettsia species in ticks submitted from forestry workers.

Ticks present a significant risk to people in the southern United States, particularly those who spend time outdoors, as ticks can transmit agents that cause various diseases. This study evaluated the risk of exposure to ticks positive for spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia species among forestry workers. From 2017 to 2021, forestry workers passively collected ticks during field surveys for the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program. We screened 1395 ticks for SFG-Rickettsia, including Amblyomma americanum (51.5% positive, N = 1,279), A. maculatum (40% positive, N = 10),…
