Current impact of measles in Latin America.

The importance of measles as a public health problem and its impact on mortality in children has been recognized for many years in Latin America. This problem was analyzed in detail in 1961 at the International Conference on Measles Immunization held in Bethesda, Maryland. However, despite the availability of good vaccine since 1963, only two countries--Chile and Cuba--have achieved the goal of the 10-year health plan for the Americas, which was a specific mortality rate of less than one death per 100,000 population. The reasons for this epidemiologic situation are mainly three: inability of t…

Autocidal control of screwworms in North America.

The larva of the blowfly Cochliomyia hominivorax, also known as the screwworm, eats the living flesh of cattle and sheep and other warm-blooded animals. A program to eradicate the screwworm in the United States was initiated in the 1950's. The program was very effective until 1968, but severe screwworm outbreaks occurred in 1972 to 1976 and in 1978. Although the program has again been effective since 1979, the possibility of outbreaks recurring in the future has highlighted the need for a broader understanding of the pest. Studies of screwworm populations in the United Stated and Mexico indica

Hypospadias: an epidemiological study in Latin America.

Epidemiological variables in relation to hypospadias were analyzed in a case-control study of a liveborn population from six Latin American countries. the frequency of hypospadias was 7.6 per 10,000 livebirths (324/423,839). The cases were divided into three types: distal (72%), proximal (18.5%) and non-specified cases (9.5%). The control group consisted of the first nonmalformed child born after each of the patients and was matched by sex, place, and time of birth. Other coexisting malformations were found in 13.6% of cases. The Brazilian sample showed the highest incidence rate (17.7/10,00)

Drug therapy in colonial and revolutionary America.

Drug therapy during the Colonial and Revolutionary War period in America is discussed. Therapy in the 17th and 18th centuries remained largely symptomatic rather than curative. Treatment included such "depletion" measures as purging, sweating, bleeding, blistering and vomiting. Purgatives, emetics, opium, cinchona bark, camphor, potassium nitrate and mercury were among the most widely used drugs. European herbals, dispensatories and textbooks were used in the American colonies, and beginning in the early 18th century, British "patent medicines" were imported. During the Revolutionary War, the

Mosquito-borne arboviruses in arctic america.

Mosquito-borne arboviruses are prevalent throughout subarctic regions of Canada and Alaska, principally in the boreal forest extending between latitudes 53 and 66 degrees N, but they have been identified in tundra regions as far north as 70 degrees N. All mosquito-borne agents have been bunyaviruses, comprising principally the snowshoe hare subtype of California encephalitis (CE) virus, but also Northway virus. Mosquito vectors comprise several Aedes species and Culiseta inornata, all of which have supported replication of CE virus following incubation at 13 degrees C or lower temperatures. Is
