Motivations, substance use and other correlates amongst property and violent offenders who regularly inject drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence, correlates and motivations for the commission of property and violent crime amongst a sample of people who inject drugs (PWID). METHOD: Data were obtained from the 2013 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS), which includes a cross-sectional sample of 887 PWID. RESULTS: Eighteen percent of PWID had committed a property offence and 3% had committed a violent offence in the month preceding interview. Opioid dependence (AOR 2.57, 95% CI 1.29-5.10) and age (AOR 0.96, 95% CI 0.93-0.99) were found to be the strongest correlates of property crime. The majority of

An investigation of fentanyl and methamphetamine use among first-time arrestees from 25 county jails across the U.S. in 2023.

Widespread use of fentanyl in combination with methamphetamine in carceral settings presents unique health risks and public health challenges. To contribute to continued efforts to understand drug use among first-time arrestees, this study characterizes the nature and extent of urine drug screenings (UDS) positive for fentanyl and/or methamphetamine among first-time arrestees receiving healthcare in 25 jails across the U.S. This study used the same data source, data extraction, sample selection, and UDS variables as those reported by Schumacher et al. (2025) and a similar data analytic strateg

Contingency Management for Stimulant Use Disorder and Association With Mortality: A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: While opioid overdose has begun to decrease in recent years, stimulant overdose has continued to increase and has not been adequately addressed. Unlike opioid use disorder, there are no medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat stimulant use disorder (StUD). The most effective treatment is contingency management (CM), a behavioral intervention that provides tangible rewards to reinforce target behaviors, such as biochemically verified abstinence. Despite the effectiveness of CM on near-term substance use behaviors, the long-term impact on key outcomes su

Impact of baseline methamphetamine/amphetamine use on discontinuation of methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone among people with prescription-type opioid use disorder in Canada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although concurrent stimulant use is common among people with opioid use disorder (OUD), there is little evidence on its impacts on opioid agonist therapy (OAT) outcomes. This study sought to determine the impact of baseline methamphetamine/amphetamine use on discontinuation of OAT among individuals with prescription-type OUD (POUD) initiating methadone or buprenorphine/naloxone as part of a pragmatic randomized trial in Canada. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a pan-Canadian pragmatic trial conducted between 2017 and 2020 comparing supervised methadone versus flexibl

Factors associated with methamphetamine dependency among men who have sex with men engaging in chemsex: Findings from the COMeT study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Sexualized drug use or "chemsex" in Taiwan commonly incorporates the use of methamphetamine. Our study aimed to assess the extent of severity of dependence of methamphetamine among MSM in Taiwan as well as motivations for engagement in chemsex. METHODS: Direct messages were sent to users of a large MSM social networking application in Taiwan between November 2018 and January 2019. MSM who had at least one experience of using drugs during sex in the preceding 12 months were invited to complete an online survey that assessed their sexual behavior, substance use and motivations for e

Addressing overdose risk among unstably housed women in San Francisco, California: an examination of potential fentanyl contamination of multiple substances.

BACKGROUND: Numerous reports have led to concerns that fentanyl is added to many street drugs as an adulterant, including to stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamine, and could increase risks for negative health outcomes. METHODS: We collected information regarding recent substance use through self-report and urine toxicology (confirmed with mass spectrometry) once a month for up to 6 monthly study visits from a probability sample of 245 women in San Francisco with a history of housing instability (2016-2019). We compared the presence of fentanyl metabolites with (1) the presence of metabo

Comparative hazards of acute myocardial infarction among hospitalized patients with methamphetamine- or cocaine-use disorders: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It is assumed that recreational use of methamphetamine can trigger acute myocardial infarction (AMI) events, but estimates of longitudinal hazards of AMI among methamphetamine users are lacking. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study: Competing-risks analysis was used to estimate time-to-AMI patterns in methamphetamine versus matched appendicitis (population-proxy) and matched cocaine (drug-control) groups. Cohorts were propensity-score-matched using demographic and clinical variables. SETTING: California, 1990-2005. PARTICIPANTS: Cohorts of individuals with no prior or concurrent

Study of Serum Malondialdehyde Level in Opioid and Methamphetamine Dependent Patients.

Opioid compound and methamphetamine are commonly used in drug abuse; these can disrupt the normal function of cellular and molecular systems, leading to several events such as oxidative stress, aging, apoptosis, and necrosis. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is the most important biomarker for evaluation of oxidative stress and determination of lipid peroxidation. In this study, 42 drug abusers and 22 healthy persons participated as case and control groups, respectively. MDA in volunteer sera was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection after pre-column deriv

Methamphetamine use is independently associated with recent risky sexual behaviors and adolescent pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Lifetime methamphetamine use among adolescents is estimated to be between 5% and 10%. Youth substance use in general is known to be associated with risky sexual behaviors, but the effect of methamphetamine use on recent risky sexual behaviors and adolescent pregnancy has received little attention. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the association between lifetime methamphetamine use and recent (past 3 months) risky sexual behaviors and lifetime adolescent pregnancy, adjusting for other substance use. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2003 National Youth Risk Behavior S

Effects of mindfulness yoga intervention on physical function, anxiety, inflammatory response, and relapse intention in methamphetamine addicts: a 24-week randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (MA) addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder that impairs physical health, induces mental distress (e.g., anxiety), and triggers abnormal inflammatory and neurotransmitter responses, all contributing to high relapse rates. Mindfulness and yoga interventions may alleviate psychological distress and improve physical well-being in substance users; however, few studies have systematically investigated their comprehensive effects on physical function, inflammatory markers, neurotransmitter balance, and relapse intention in MA addicts, leaving a gap in non-pharmacologic

Reliability of a Rapid Screener for an Intercept Survey about Drug Use.

Intercept surveys are a relatively inexpensive method to rapidly collect data on drug use. However, querying use of dozens of drugs can be time-consuming. We determined whether using a rapid screener is efficacious in detecting which participants use drugs and should be offered a full survey which asks more extensively about use. We surveyed 103 adults (age 18-29) on streets of Manhattan, NY in 2019 to test the reliability of a screener which queried past-year use of six drugs. Those reporting any drug use on the screener (and a third of those not reporting drug use) were offered the full surv

Construction and Analysis of Protein-Protein Interaction Network of Heroin Use Disorder.

Heroin use disorder (HUD) is a complex disease resulting from interactions among genetic and other factors (e.g., environmental factors). The mechanism of HUD development remains unknown. Newly developed network medicine tools provide a platform for exploring complex diseases at the system level. This study proposes that protein-protein interactions (PPIs), particularly those among proteins encoded by casual or susceptibility genes, are extremely crucial for HUD development. The giant component of our constructed PPI network comprised 111 nodes with 553 edges, including 16 proteins with large

Use of drugs with dependence liability.

The term addictive as used by the popular press frequently confuses the more precise concepts of acute and chronic tolerance, physical dependence and withdrawal, and psychologic dependence. Serious physical dependence on psychoactive drugs is rare and is easily managed. In contrast, psychologic dependence, the most important reason for persistent drug use, is much more common and is difficult to treat. Some tactics are available - for example, confrontation and discussion with the patient about how a drug is not going to be effective over long periods. Treating the symptom of a complex problem
