Intrauterine transfusion treatment of nonimmune hydrops fetalis secondary to human parvovirus B19 infection.

Congenital human parvovirus B19 infection presented in this case as nonimmune hydrops fetalis that resulted from aplastic anemia at 20 weeks' gestation. Intravascular transfusion therapy led to resolution of the hydrops and a term delivery of an appropriately grown neonate.

Sirolimus treatment for neonate with blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disease that usually presents with multiple venous malformations in the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Lesions located in the gastrointestinal tract always result in chronic gastrointestinal bleeding and severe anemia. The successful management of BRBNS with sirolimus had been reported in many institutions, due to its impact on signaling pathways of angiogenesis. However, the experience in treatment of neonates with BRBNS was limited. CASE SUMMARY: A 38-day-old premature female infant born with multiple skin lesions, presented t

[The course of pregnancy, labor and perinatal outcomes in females with extrapulmonary tuberculosis].

Ninety-six pregnant women and purperas with extrapulmonary tuberculosis were examined. A control comprised 120 apparently healthy females. The course of pregnancy, labor, and neonatality in women with genital tuberculosis was complicated: OPG gestosis, anemia, toxicosis of the first half of pregnancy, threatening miscarriage, premature and prompt labor, premature and early discharge of amniotic fluid, neonatal asphyxia. The frequency of complications of pregnancy, labor, and perinatal outcomes in females with extrapulmonary tuberculosis at other sites and in healthy pregnant women was pratical

Time to implement delayed cord clamping.

Immediate umbilical cord clamping after delivery is routine in the United States despite little evidence to support this practice. Numerous trials in both term and preterm neonates have demonstrated the safety and benefit of delayed cord clamping. In premature neonates, delayed cord clamping has been shown to stabilize transitional circulation, lessening needs for inotropic medications and reducing blood transfusions, necrotizing enterocolitis, and intraventricular hemorrhage. In term neonates, delayed cord clamping has been associated with decreased iron-deficient anemia and increased iron st

Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia in a Premature Neonate Mimicking Neonatal Sepsis.

Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) is a rare hematologic malignancy in children. Its presentations include anemia, thrombocytopenia, monocytosis, skin rash, marked hepatomegaly, and/or splenomegaly. Fever and respiratory involvement are common. Here, we report a case of a premature neonate with initial symptoms of respiratory distress. She gradually developed clinical manifestations of JMML that mimicked neonatal sepsis. Three weeks after birth, JMML was diagnosed. This is the first reported case of JMML presenting in a premature infant in Taiwan.

Splenic rupture in a newborn with severe hemophilia--case report and review.

Life-threatening splenic rupture is rare in neonates with severe hemophilia. There are only 3 cases of splenic rupture in neonates with hemophilia reported in the literature. We present the case of an infant, born to a hemophilia A carrier mother. The infant was asymptomatic until discharge at 48 hours of age, but presented on the third day of life with shock, abdominal distension, and severe anemia. Computed tomography of the abdomen confirmed the diagnosis of splenic rupture with hemoperitoneum. The infant recovered after extensive supportive care surgery and factor replacement.

Hemoperitoneum and disseminated intravascular coagulation in two neonates with congenital bilateral neuroblastoma.

We report two neonates with anemia, hemoperitoneum, and bilateral palpable abdominal masses. Both developed bleeding: a hemoperitoneum in one and visceral hemorrhages secondary to disseminated intravascular coagulation in the other. Each child was thought to have an unusual complication of adrenal hemorrhage, as the masses were of mixed echogenicity. However, histological evaluation revealed neuroblastoma. These cases point out the diagnostic dilemma of a mixed echogenicity suprarenal mass in the neonatal period and emphasize that local and disseminated bleeding can occur as a major manifestat

Iron deficiency anemia in suckling piglets: When physiology cannot keep up with breeding goals.

Suckling piglets are the only neonates among mammals to show a disruption in the balance between iron supply and demand that results in spontaneous and progressive iron deficiency anemia (IDA). IDA in piglets exhibits a biphasic pathology with a mild manifestation just after birth due to critically low hepatic iron stores, which subsequently develops into severe anemia as a result of the extremely high growth rate in the early postnatal period produced by intensive selective breeding. Intriguingly, no cases of IDA have been reported in the offspring of wild boar, the major ancestor of contempo

Component therapy.

The dramatic advances that have taken place in recent years in the care of sick and premature infants also have been matched by a similar increase in the use of blood transfusion therapy. Haematological features indicate that a newborn has a blood volume of 85-125 ml/kg the foetal haemoglobin is 60-85% and average Hb in full term infant is 18 gm/dl. By 2-3 months it falls to 11-12 g/dl the main cause of anemia are iron poor diet, weaning diets recurrent or chronic infections and hemolytic episodes in malarious areas. The red cells transfusions are usually top up transfusions, exchange transfus

Parvovirus B19 in Pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE: Although the risk of parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy and subsequent risk of adverse fetal outcome are low, understanding management practices is essential for proper treatment of fetuses with nonimmune hydrops fetalis. In addition, continued investigation into delivery management, breastfeeding recommendations, and congenital abnormalities associated with pregnancies complicated by parvovirus B19 infection is needed. OBJECTIVE: This review describes the risks associated with parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy and the management strategies for fetuses with vertical

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency: not exclusively in males.

Glucose-6-phosphate (G6PD) deficiency is the most common human enzyme defect, often presenting with neonatal jaundice and/or acute hemolytic anemia, triggered by oxidizing agents. G6PD deficiency is an X-linked, hereditary disease, mainly affecting men, but should also be considered in females with an oxidative hemolysis.

Neonatal jaundice.

This article discusses the production, transport, and excretion of bilirubin in the newborn period. The causes, significance, and treatment of unconjugated and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia are different; and because this is so, it is important to review the main causes and management of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn period could be either due to hepatocellular dysfunction or extrahepatic biliary obstruction. There are several recent advances in early differentiation and management of these two entities.

The effect of intravenous iron supplementation compared to oral iron supplementation during pregnancy on neonatal outcomes-a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

UNLABELLED: Anemia and iron deficiency during pregnancy have been associated with preterm birth and neonatal complications. However, the evidence on whether intravenous or oral supplementation should be used has been conflicting. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of intravenous iron compared to oral iron supplementation on objective neonatal outcomes. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Two databases were searched in November 2024 and the search was updated in February 2025. The main outcomes were the rate of preterm birth, stillbirths, and

A single-center, retrospective analysis of 17 cases of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn caused by anti-M antibodies.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to summarize the laboratory findings and clinical features of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data for 17 infants with anti-M-induced HDFN (anti-M-HDFN) diagnosed between June 2013 and May 2019. Their maternal history, neonatal diagnosis on admission, and laboratory test results were compared with those of 15 infants with HDFN involving the ABO blood group system, 15 infants with HDFN involving the Rh system, and 15 premature infants. RESULTS: In the anti-M-HDFN group, 94.12% (16/17), 35.29% (6/17), and 17.65% (3

Association of necrotizing enterocolitis with elective packed red blood cell transfusions in stable, growing, premature neonates.

The purpose of this study was to determine an association between packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions for anemia and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in a subset of stable, growing, premature neonates. As part of a survey of current clinical practices over a 17-month period from June 1999 to October 2000, a chart review was performed to determine the relationship between elective PRBC transfusions and the occurrence of NEC. Demographic data were tabulated and compared between the NEC patients with a prior history of immediate blood transfusion (within 48 hours of onset of symptoms) and th

Fetal Cytokine Balance, Erythropoietin and Thalassemia but Not Placental Malaria Contribute to Fetal Anemia Risk in Tanzania.

Fetal anemia is common in malaria-endemic areas and a risk factor for anemia as well as mortality during infancy. Placental malaria (PM) and red cell abnormalities have been proposed as possible etiologies, but the relationship between PM and fetal anemia has varied in earlier studies, and the role of red cell abnormalities has not been studied in malaria-endemic areas. In a Tanzanian birth cohort study designed to elucidate the pathogenesis of severe malaria in young infants, we performed a cross-sectional analysis of risk factors for fetal anemia. We determined PM status, newborn red cell ab

Phlebotomy-induced anemia reduces oxygen-induced retinopathy severity and dampens retinal developmental transcriptomic pathways in rats.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomy-induced-anemia (PIA), which induces tissue hypoxia and angiogenesis, occurs universally among infants at risk for severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We hypothesized that PIA exacerbates pathologic retinal neovascularization in ROP. METHODS: We induced PIA to a hematocrit of 18% among rats undergoing the established 50/10 oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) model. Rats were euthanized at P15 and P20, during the avascular and neovascular phases of OIR, respectively.
